Went to see the Golden Compass and it was pretty good. Not quite as good as we had hoped for, but entertaining none the less... after all, what's not to like about an armoured, hard-as-nails polar bear that's voiced by Tom Baker?! However, what let the film down was its narrative. I have heard they've pulled a few punches in the adaptation from the book to keep it accessible to the family audience. Shame.
Still, the acting - especially from the young lead actress - was good, and visually the rendering of the animals and the whole "future-past" thing was nothing short of stunning. I think that you can spot good use of CGI when you watch a film and don't think, "Ooh, good CGI effect" all the way through it. And that was the case here. What you do think is, "Ooh, that looks amazing!"
With a little bit of work on the script (and a bit more Daniel Craig for the missus) the sequel could be amazing.

In answer to the questions below, the compass plant is a very interesting prairie plant. It's lower leaves almost always line up with north and south. Long ago it helped travelers find their way across the prairie. Common in black soil prairies. Their roots can go down 12 feet and their leaves stay surprisingly cool even on a very hot day.
The architecture of the Compass Plant leaf stands out in black and white. In the prairie at Sugar Grove Nature Center in Funks Grove.
Oops, the Institute closed by the time we arrived. I really was hoping for some photos of Compass and some of the lovely French Impressionism paintings, but it was not to be. We couldn't even walk the lovely campus, due to the construction.
