Kodak Retina

The first Retina, a compact folding camera which pioneered the 135 format, was followed by two new models in 1936. The Retina I, which was the more popular of the two, was essentially the same as the previous model. The Retina I was most commonly equipped with a 50 mm f/3.5 Schneider Kreuznach Retina-Xenar lens and Compur or Compur-Rapid shutter, though other lenses and shutters were available. The Retina II was a more expensive model which included a rangefinder.

The Retina Ia and Retina IIa of 1951 were similar to their respective predecessors but with the addition of flash synchronization and wind levers rather than knobs. The sleeker Retina Ib and Retina IIc came out in 1954 along with the Retina IIIc, which was basically a Retina IIc with a selenium light meter. The fifth and final generation of folding Retinas, which included the Retina IIC, Retina IIIC, and meter-equipped Retina IB, was introduced in 1957

Not easy to get into the garbage room. But they finally let me in (and forgot about me). Here is a shot of the dumpster the chute goes to. Thankfully when I got the the chute was clogged so I was somewhat relieved to think I could find the bag. This shot shots the ram cramming garbage into this dumpster. I never really looked at dumpster compactors but I now know why garbage is almost always loose. By the ram is a “blade” to bread down bulky trash. The blade also slits almost every garbage bag and makes it easy to squeeze the air out. This is loosely compacted garbage. I search the dumpster do the bag and since it’s not too compacted, I could search it. I try to figure out the issue so I can start getting the bags to drop.

with a Canon 550d

Surprisingly compact for 5,100 pounds of thrust (about 5,000 HP). First generation British engine powered the Canadian version of T-33 as well as Russian Mig15 (reverse engineered from a purchase of 50).

After WWII the Soviets took a lot of the axial flow jet engines that powered the German Me262 home and tried to perfect them but gave up and bought the 50 Nene 10's. It may seem now like insanity for the British to have sold them but they were probably acutely aware at that time that had it not been for the Red Army we'd all be speaking German, at least those of us not worked to death in slave labour camps.

This is in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario, and well worth a visit. The Hamilton transit system even provided free cab rides to the museum from beyond the last bus stop or at least they did when I visited in 2006. The museum maintains some rare warbirds in flying condition. If you ever wanted a ride in an Avro Lancaster this is the place to go. It's an easy day trip from Toronto by bus or train.

The BMW Compact was a small family car which was basically a truncated hatchback version of the BMW E36 platform.

The car was available in 316i, 316g (compressed natural gas), 318ti and 318tds (diesel). The title Ti(Touring International) is unique to the Compact range and is used on the more powerful versions, harking back to the BMW New Class Tii models of the sixties and seventies.

From front bumper to A pillar, the Compact is identical to the BMW 3 Series (E36) sedan, sharing the front fenders, bumpers, lights, windshield, wing mirrors, and the hood. As with the entire E36 range, the E36/5 also shares an idential wheelbase. Similarities with the E36 sedan/coupe range end here; from the A pillar rearwards, the E36/5 is unique from others in the E36 range featuring unique framed doors, windows, roof, trunk pan, taillights, and suspension.

The BMW E36/5 Compact shares its suspension with the BMW Z3 and M Coupe/Roadster. The front employed the E36's standard MacPherson strut design. However the and rear suspension used a semi trailing arm from the previous model BMW 3 Series (E30) which allowed for more a lower trunk floor height, fold down rear seats, and an exterior undermounted compact spare tire.

The inherent design of the trailing arm suspension was that it favoured oversteer. It is the rarest and most sought after of the E36 318 lineup by enthusiasts, being the lightest, fastest, best handling and least expensive.

Apart from a simple one piece dashboard, the E36 Compact shared the same seats and trim as the full-sized 3-series. During 1993/4, BMW built several prototype 5-door compacts, which looked outwardly even more similar to the saloon right back to the C-pillar. However, following the initially disappointing sales response to the Compact (in comparison to the Saloon & Coupe models) BMW decided not to offer a 5-door variant. The prototypes were stripped and the bodyshells disposed of.

The E36 Compact was very popular in its home market in Europe, which prompted BMW to market the car to North America for the 1995 model year. The E36 Compact's front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout was unique for the segment, giving it no direct competitors in North America.

An "Exposition Park" needs to be about emerging technologies -- not just a museum of past discoveries. CHIP carries on this tradition, and should be a permanent fixture on the campus. Tucked away behind the California Science Museum, this temporary exhibit was a delightful find. Although it's small, It's very livable. Well done!

__________

Architecturally, the crown jewel of Exposition Park is the 1913 Natural History Museum (renamed the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History), designed by the prominent team of Frank Hudson and William Munsell. The Natural History Museum is mostly Beaux Arts, capped by a large dome of stained glass, supported by marble pillars. The building accents are Romanesque and Spanish Plateresque.

The Sunken Garden (renamed the Rose Garden in the 1920's) is the park's other National Register site. There are more than 20,000 rose bushes, with more than 200 varieties. The Rose Garden, with the Natural History Museum in the background has been captured in numerous films and TV shows, most recently featured as the home of the "Jeffferson Institute" on the TV crime drama Bones. The park's past is checkered. Originally it was a vanue for horse, camel, dog, and later automobile racing; it also reportedly housed the city's longest bar and "one of its most stylish brothels."

Also lining the Rose Garden are other architectural treasures. The Beaux Arts/Classical Exposition Building (renamed the California Science Center) runs parallel to the garden, and opposite the Natural History Museum is the Beaux Arts/Egyptian Revival Armory Building (Now the Science Center School and Amgen Center for Science Learning. Next to the Armory Building is the 1984 Frank O Gehry and Associatiates California Aerospace Museum. Elsewhere in the park is The Museum of African-American History, designed in 1984 by Jack Haywood and Vincent J Proby. The Memorial Coliseum was designed by John and Donald Parkinson.

Exposition park holds the distinction of the only venue in the world to host two olympic summer games (X and XXIII) and two Superbowls (I and VII). During the 1990's the park's popularity decreased and it was possible to spend time in the Rose Garden and almost not see another person. Today the park has regained its popularity.

__________

The park is public space owned by the state of California, whose major cultural facilities mentioned above are operated by both the state and Los Angeles County. The 160-acre (0.65 km2) site served as an agricultural fairground from 1872 to 1910 (hence its original name Agricultural Park). Farmers sold their harvests on the grounds, while horses, dogs, and even camels competed along a racetrack where the rose garden now blooms.

In 1880, John Edward, Ozro Childs, and former Governor Downey persuaded the State of California to purchase 160 acres (0.65 km2) in Los Angeles to foster agriculture in the Southland. Soon after USC was built in 1880, the city's most influential families moved into the neighborhood, but did not appreciate the racing and the gambling that came with it. As a result, the rose garden replaced the racetrack, and the park became what it is now with its grand museums.
