Youth and community development charity Active Communities Network joined forces with retailer, Asda and their charitable arm - the Asda Foundation - to launch a partnership aimed at improving the employability of young people across Tower Hamlets.
Part of a wider pan-London, three-year programme, the Tower Hamlets partnership will see Asda ‘Community Life Champions’ and colleagues from local stores mentor young people, shadow them during intensive sport and youth work programmes and offer them work placement opportunities and training including the bespoke Open College Network (OCN) ‘Skills for Employment and Enterprise’ accreditation.
The partnership targets some of the area’s most ‘at risk’ young people, delivering clear progression pathways into citizenship and volunteering with those involved supported with access to work placements, help with writing CVs and gaining interview practice.
Despite consistent heavy rain throughout the day, over 120 young people aged 12-16 years old and local volunteers attended the launch at Mile End Stadium alongside a special visit from local MP Jim Fitzpatrick.
The free event started at 10am and included boxing, football, handball, long-jump and a ‘keepy-up’ football competition.
The events was supported by Hornstars SC, Poplar Harca, Centre Spot Events, Tower Hamlets Council, Spotlight, Milestone, Mile End Community Project, Rio Ferdinand Foundation, London GD Handball Club, and Fight 4 Change.
The event finished with medal presentations at 3pm.

The Community and Culture Festival offers a broad range of activities throughout the day, from readings by local authors to pick-up volleyball, from voter registration to face painting. The event attracts people of all ages and persuasions who come together and celebrate Oberlin's rich culture and community. Tremadog central square with the Town Hall/Market building right of centre. The town was planned and developed between 1805 and 1811 on expensively reclaimed land by the entrepreneurial MP William Madocks. Madocks envisaged that his town would thrive as a staging post on the route to a projected Irish Sea ferryport on the nearby Lleyn peninsular. In the event the ferry traffic went to Holyhead leaving Tremadog in its present embalmed condition.

I designed and (with the help of some selfless volunteers) executed this set design for a three-act melodrama, entitled "Those Wedding Bells Shall Not Ring Out - or - The Bride Wore Green Chili Peppers ". Community Day was the culmination of BAMPFA's Grand Opening Week. The museum doors were thrown open for twelve hours to mark this historic occasion. Visitors got a first look at our inaugural exhibition, Architecture of Life. St. Luke's UM Church purchased items to make gift bags for every person who entered the Mission on June 17, 2015. Ivy Tech Nursing Students helped put the bags together and passed them out that day. Nurse Humdinger (clown) came and put a smile on everyone's face! Balloons were provided by A Bloom for all Seasons. Cakes were provided by Create A Cake and Kroger. Scoops donated two huge tubs of ice cream. Thank you to everyone who made this day special.
The Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis) is a striking bird characterized by its vivid yellow body and black markings around its eyes and nape, with a sharp, melodious call. Found across Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, and parts of India, it inhabits forests, woodlands, and urban parks, often seen foraging in tall trees. A fruit and insect eater, this oriole is also known for its ability to adapt to different environments, including urban areas, and builds its distinctive hanging nest in the fork of tree branches.
We celebrated Earth Day with a wonderful afternoon of art, music and talks about protecting our environment. Hundreds of activists, artists, environmentalists and youth gathered to pay tribute to Mother Earth at Tamalpais High School’s Student Center in Mill Valley on April 22, 2018. We started the day with the first public showing of our Art Float for Social Change -- a unique parade float created to inspire more people to participate in democracy. A large globe spun over a circle of hands and a carousel of art, pulled by a colorful dragon. Singers and speakers of all ages stood on the decorated stage to share their ideas for a better world. Many more painted original posters about the earth, which were featured on the float carousel.
Dozens of environmental partners showed participants how we can all take action to reverse global warming -- organizations like the Sierra Club, Resilient Neighborhoods and 350 Marin, to name but a few. Our guest speakers were Mark Squire from Good Earth, Crystal Chissel from Project Drawdown, Marin Supervisor Damon Connolly and young local activists: they gave informative talks on a wide range of solutions to curb climate change. Participants also learned to plant a veggie garden, ride an electric bike, while others registered to vote.
We ended the day with music performances by the charming Twinkling Stars of Singers Marin, young singer Emma Spike, and sing-alongs led by Reed Fromer with the Freedom Singers and Redwoods Seniors for Peace.
Earth Day 2008 brought together diverse groups of people who might not have connected otherwise: activists, artists, environmentalists, makers, children, teenagers, teachers and parents. We are particularly grateful to all the young people who participated in our celebration.
This community gathering was produced by Democracy Cafe, Eco Warriors of MVCAN and Tam Makers, with the gracious support of Tamalpais High School, Mill Valley Community Action Network, Good Earth, Driver’s Market, Sloat Garden Supply and all our partners.
Thanks to event organizers Fabrice Florin, Jennifer Tomkins, Carol Korenbrot, Geo Monley, Grace Severtson -- and all the wonderful volunteers who helped produce this inspiring event. We think making art, playing music and talking with people of all ages and backgrounds can build mutual understanding and engage us to take meaningful political action together.

I had the privilage of fielding questions on the community enlightenment panel at SL5B today. I'd love to do more of this in the future because I really think that people are capable of so much in Second Life if only they had a better understanding of how things worked and had things explained in a way that made learning fun. Resident education rocks!

Nearly 3,400 community living workers who support adults, children and infants with disabilities and their families went on strike, starting Wednesday January 30.
The 24-hour job action affected Richmond-based Developmental Disabilities Association (DDA) and Burnaby-based PosAbilities, the two largest community social service agencies in British Columbia, but also agencies in Prince George, Coquitlam, Surrey and Vancouver.
