Community was created by Rebecca Louise Law by combining more than 50 of her previous installations to create what she calls "an undulating natural space suspended in time". Dozens of interns, museum staffers, and volunteers were involved in assembling the strings of dried plants and flowers suspended from the ceiling.

Title: Dirt and Pond Near Bushes

Theme: Conservation (Nature, animals, etc)
Materials and techniques: Tempera paint, glitter glue (a little for pond), and oil pastels.
Did you enjoy this project? Yes, we enjoyed it!
About: We wanted to point out that there was a pond at the Santa Monica Mountains. It wasn't as blue as we made it look, but we wanted it to stand out because it stood out to us. We had some chia seeds while we were near there and that helped us remember this part most. Around the pond there were a lot of bushes and it was surrounded by a dirt path that we hiked on. We liked how this national park is being conserved and wanted to show what it looked like to be there.

Community Day was the culmination of BAMPFA's Grand Opening Week. The museum doors were thrown open for twelve hours to mark this historic occasion. Visitors got a first look at our inaugural exhibition, Architecture of Life. The day included DJs spinning records, dance performanes, a weaving workshop, and other impromptu happenings throughout the building, organized by artist David Wilson. Photo: Joseph Driste.

The church is located in the Sugarland area of Poolesville. Freed slaves established the Sugarland Forest Community in Maryland in the late 1800's. Members of the Pleasant family sold the land to these former slaves. Sugarland operated as an autonomous Black township serviced by a church, school, post office, and store.

To celebrate at the culmination of our opening week events, we hosted our Community Open House on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Groups of a cappella singers, dancers, and musicians filled the center as we opened up our spaces and invited the public to poke around. Elise Witt led An Impromptu Glorious Chorus at the end of the open house and invited everyone to join in. After the open house, we welcomed our second performers, the conductorless ensemble Sphinx Virtuosi.

“The hospice has this path - people who have lived there are commemorated with a brick in the path, with a special message written on it.
Their families and friends have chosen the messages as a way of remembering their loved ones - it's a message to the deceased or a memory of the person that the family could remember. I like the way the messages are almost hidden, until you look closely.
Most families/visitors find the path extremely moving emotionally, but it’s funny at the same time with all the crazy messages left.”
