Another hallmark of this western branchline are the cattle gates across the tracks. 403 eases downhill and through one of the gates that cross the branch. July 29, 2013.

Doorways with metal security gates in a San Francisco neighborhood.

The title of the photograph is, obviously I hope, an ironic joke. This community relies on gates, but it is hardly the sort of place the comes to mind when we think of a "gated community," an exclusive sort of place where "regular people" are perhaps not welcome. Here there are gates, too, but on individual doorways of residences and businesses, reflecting the reality of life in areas of inner cities.

The gates intrigue me — what lies behind them, and what is it like to live behind them? But the shapes and patterns produced by the gates, with their vertical texture, the colorful vertical row of painted tiles, and the larger wall surface that has clearly been painted over many times, most likely to cover up graffiti.

"True community is based upon equality, mutuality, and reciprocity. It affirms the richness of individual diversity as well as the common human ties that bind us together"

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale District swapped their handcuffs for shinpads as they took to the field at the town’s Spotland Stadium - also know as the Crown Oil Arena, this month and put on a very impressive display - all in the name of charity.

A squad of 20 from the division faced local community group Bangladeshi Arts and Sports Association (BASA) Rochdale CIC on Monday 23 May to raise funds for the Springhill Hospice.

The game was a re-match of BASA’s 5-0 victory when the teams first met 12 months ago, after BASA reached out to local officers with the aim of using sport as a medium to bring diverse communities and the police closer together.

Known as the Community Cohesion Cup, the match marked the strong relationships being built by GMP and members of its minority groups in Rochdale to tackle social exclusion in society.

The stakes were risen further for this year’s edition as it saw the fixture played in front of over a hundred-strong crowd, including the town’s Mayor and Chief Superintendent Nicky Porter.

A total of over £1100 was raised on the night – with all proceeds going to Springhill Hospice – a Rochdale-based charity offering palliative care to patients and their families from diagnosis to end-of-life – a service that is close to the heart of players in both teams.

Harrison Cunliffe, Operation Support Officer at GMP Rochdale – and one of the main organisers for the game – said: “We’re delighted to have faced BASA for a second year running, and even more so after such an improvement in fortunes after last year’s defeat!

I bring one of my granddaughters to her piano lesson each week at the building next to this. It's one of many places that brings communities together and encourages people to support each other and help others. I have never visited when this door is closed. It is always open and welcoming.

For some reason I always enjoy the reflexion of the outdoors which can be seen when looking in to the building.

Innovative social investment practices can transform the community finance sector—however, this market faces real challenges in attracting mainstream private investors at scale. In 2015, attendees in the Community Investing Working Group will focus on actionable strategies to broaden the U.S. social finance market through private capital investments in the areas of health, housing, small business lending, and community development.
