This is Master Alfred (or perhaps Frederick) Forte of 17 Broad Street, Waterford, pictured in his Holy Communion outfit. It's pure coincidence as I chose this photo a few days ago, but all over Ireland today children are "making their Communion".
Found this: "Uncle Charlie moved to Ireland in the late 1930s and married Emilia Magliocco, also from Mortale. They had a restaurant in Waterford and a beach cafe at nearby Tramore until the late 1940s, when they returned to Brighton. They had four children, Alfonso, Filomena, Frederick and Michael" from the Brighton Fortes site.
Date: 1945?

My oldest munchkin is having her First Holy Communion at the 5pm Mass on Saturday. We're all pretty excited! It is 2am, and I just finished and photographed the cake. Phew!
Thank you all so much for your awesome comments on my photos. I'm so very sorry that I haven't been able to visit your streams for quite a while. It's hard to get more than little snatches of time on the computer, lately. I LOVE YOU, FLICKR FRIENDS!!!

I know there are a lot of differing ideas about communion. Some say that the elements literally become the body and blood of Christ, others say that it is simply a symbol. I believe that God's spirit is present in a special way in communion. Remember what happened to those who took the bread and wine in an "unworthy" way? Some became sick and died! Need I say more?
This one was put together for our Good Friday service. Simple... just like communion.

A communion shoot of twins. Not often the chance to do that, sovery happy. I choose an abandoned railway station for the shoot. This time only she wanted to be photographed. Being a twin must be exhausting ;-)
"O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Bow down before him, his glory proclaim;
With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
Kneel and adore him: the Lord is his name!"
During Holy Communion this hymn was sung (as well as the Gregorian chant Communio and a newly-composed motet by James MacMillan).

"Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church" – St Thomas Aquinas.
Today is the Solemnity of All Saints, and my sermon for today can be read here.
Stained glass detail from Harvington Hall of St Nicholas Owen praying to Our Lady.
Girl in Communion dress.
Scanned from glass negative.
On the original glass negative, on the glass side, there were fragments of red dye around
the girl's face; this dye must have functioned to harmonize her skin tones with the rest of the photograph.
But I have no idea why there would been this difference in the first place.
Late 1920's, early 1930's.
