Standing at the helm of tradition and duty, one gazes beyond the horizon, where the boundless sea meets the endless sky. The deck beneath serves as a stage of discipline, the uniform as a testament to unwavering resolve.

The Old DuPage County Courthouse stands in downtown Wheaton one block south of the Illinois Prairie Path, and I've been meaning to get a picture of it ever since I moved to DuPage County five years ago. This isn't the courthouse anymore -- it's been converted to apartments, which would make for a nifty place to live -- but from 1896 to 1990, this was the seat of DuPage County government. Clarence Darrow (the famous Monkey Trial defense lawyer played in fictionalized form by Spencer Tracy in Inherit the Wind) once defended a guy in a trial here, and this was where the first convict in Illinois was sent to the electric chair. (These were different cases.) A lightning strike destroyed the original tower in 1988 -- that's a big reason why they built the new courthouse -- so the tower you see here is a reconstruction.

This wasn't the first DuPage County Courthouse, of course. The first courthouse was down in Naperville, a thriving little town on the southern edge of the county that was named the seat of the county when it formed in 1839. The people of Naperville were dumb, though, and in 1851, they turned down a request from the Chicago & Galena Union Railroad to pass through town and build a station. The railroad routed north through Wheaton instead, and all the commerce that had been poised to explode in Naperville went north with it.

It didn't take long for people to say the county seat should move to Wheaton, too, and the county held a referendum to settle the issue in 1857. Naperville won, but that just ticked Wheaton off, and they kept growing out of spite. They held another election to move the county seat in 1867, and this time Wheaton beat Naperville by a 51-vote margin, 1,686 to 1,635. The Wheatonistas quickly cajoled the county into spending $20,000 on a new courthouse (not this one) and started the logistical proceedings to move everything up the road.

But the Napervillains weren't having it, and when the county clerks tried to move the county records, the people of Naperville blocked them. The Wheatonistas responded by collecting a bunch of Civil War veterans into a county militia and sending them to the Naperville courthouse in what everybody called "The Midnight Raid." The Napervillains met the Wheatonistas on the Wheaton-Naperville Road and managed to grab some of the records back, and they sent those on to the Cook County Recorder of Deeds in Chicago for safe keeping. Then everybody lawyered up as the Napervillains accused election judges of malfeasance and demanded a recount. That all went on for a couple of years until the records were burned in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, leaving the Wheatonistas and the Napervillains with nothing to fight over. The Napervillains gave it up, but they learned their lesson, and when the Feds came along in 1987 asking to build Interstate 88 through the north side of town, they said yes.

"Strategic Air Command" is not my favorite Jimmy Stewart movie, but one that I'll watch when it's on. I remember the grand flying scenes in this beautiful bomber. Imagine my pleasure in seeing one at the museum configured as a bomber with the appropriate SAC insignia. So cool.
