Having just picked up from an early house fire Waterbury Fire was at it again with a fully involved structure fire that would send at least eight civilians and one fire fighter to the hospital. As fire fighters arrived on scene at 99 Pearl St they would have their hands full evacuating the many residents from the fast moving fire, three of which had to be rescued by ladder from the upper front porches of the house. It was quickly determined that the fire would be an exterior attack only. Multiple hand lines were stretched and Truck 1 set up it's tower pipe to attack the fire from above. In addition the deck monitor on Engine 10 would be put to use to use to knock down the fire from street level. But the quick moving fire would continue to keep ahead of the fire fighter causing major structural damage as well as a partial collapse of the "B" side.
Surrounding towns were call upon for additional ems resources since both of the City's ems providers had all their cars dedicated to treating the multiple patients at the scene most of whom were suffering from smoke inhalation. Thomaston, Naugatuck and Beacon Falls would each send an ambulance and crew to help cover any additional ems requests in the City.
Due to the bitter cold and the length of time the first due units were on scene crews from through out the City who were not already on scene were moved up to relieve the cold and tired fire fighters. The Fire Marshal was called to the scene early on in the fire and the cause of this blaze remains under investigation

caught from beginning to end. You can see it changing shape and then, just sucking back up and going away as fast as it formed. Breath taking to witness.
*A cold air funnel is a high based weak circulation that occurs in a cool air mass. By high based it is meant it develops well above the earth's surface. Since it is high based and weak they rarely impact the earth's surface although they can look threatening. Unlike typical tornadoes, cold air funnels develop in a shallow cool air mass and often behind a cold frontal passage. The mixing of cool and windy conditions in the lower troposphere with air in the middle troposphere flowing in a different direction may spark the rotation that spins up the funnel. If the air is moist enough and rises enough the condensation funnel will be visible.
