The Clock Tower (sometimes called the Jubilee Clock Tower) is a free-standing clock tower in the centre of Brighton, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. Built in 1888 in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, the distinctive structure included innovative structural features and became a landmark in the popular and fashionable seaside resort. The city's residents "retain a nostalgic affection" for it, even though opinion is sharply divided as to the tower's architectural merit. English Heritage has listed the clock tower at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.

Perfection! I would love to have this hanging in my kitchen.

The Prague astronomical clock, or Prague orloj (Czech: Pražský orloj), is a medieval astronomical clock located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The clock was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working.

It is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall in the Old Town Square.

The clock mechanism itself is composed of three main components: the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky and displaying various astronomical details; "The Walk of the Apostles", a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures—notably a figure of Death (represented by a skeleton) striking the time; and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months.

According to local legend, the city will suffer if the clock is neglected and its good operation is placed in jeopardy and a skeleton, mounted on the clock, was supposed to nod his head in confirmation. Based on the legend, the only hope was represented by a boy born in the New Year´s night.

My papa's grandfather clock, which he inherited from his father. His family immigrated from England, and this clock, which was built in Brighton, is a family heirloom. The clock has a very interesting history, which speaks to the history of my papa's family.

The temperature scale goes from -40 to +40 *C which is not quite cold enough to show the temperature on the coldest day of the year and a little higher than the warmest day, but I like the symmetry.

This old clock resides at Balmoral School in Calgary. Although wikipedia (unfortunately edited by some that don't look lol) says 1915, the imprint year on the building shows 1913. I can see that this has stood the test of time quite well from that year....such a gorgeous building. I'd love to go inside of it one day.

Going through the archives I came across this one tonight and didn't realize I captured the moon right above the clock...nice capture even if I do say so myself.

Nice to see this clock still hanging in at a small local car dealer lot. Wonder how many businesses it has seen come and go? It's been here a long time.

“Do you know” said Sprite, “I was certain there used to be two antennae up here.”

“Oh there was” replied Spectre.

“Oh” pondered Sprite. “What happened to them?”

“The pair of them ran of and got married” sighed Spectre, hauling himself up.

“Two antennae got married?” mused Sprite.

“Yeah” replied Spectre. “The service was crap, but the reception was excellent.”

The astronomical clock of Padua on the clock tower in Piazza dei Signori was built in 1344 and is one of the oldest clocks in the world still in working order. The designer, Jacopo de’Dondi, became so famous for this work that his family name was later changed to “Dondi dell’Orologio,” or “Dondi of the Clock.”

The magnificent timepiece has a 24-hour dial, so the hour hand makes a full rotation only once a day, not twice, moving at half the usual speed and starting at the right (“zero hour”) rather than at the top. The clock also strikes the hours on a bell from 1 to 24. The dial shows the day of the month, the current phase of the Moon, the motion of the planets, and the position of the Sun in the Zodiac.

After the original clock was destroyed at the end of the 14th century, a replacement was built in 1423 as a faithful copy of the original, with one exception: It was missing one of Zodiac signs, Libra. There are various stories about the origin of this curious lack, the most famous saying that the builder deliberately omitted the symbol, which is an emblem of justice, because he was not paid the amount of money he was promised. Another version of the story says that the symbol was also missing from the original clock as a protest by the designer against the rule of the Carraresi family.

In reality, this missing symbol comes from the use of the pre-Roman Zodiacal system, which united the constellations of Scorpio and Libra. The two halves of Libra were seen as the Scorpio’s claws and later became the scales, but even today the name of the two most luminous stars in Libra are the Arabic names for “northern claw” and “southern claw.” Anyway, some people say that the Libra sign is actually hidden somewhere in Piazza dei Signori.

Following a gentle nudge from guliolopez yesterday, that he'd been "waiting patiently for a Cork photo for a while", I thought we might indulge him with another today. We don't want to get on the wrong side of anyone from the People's Republic! So, here's a gorgeous one of Mallow taken at about 4.55 on a very sunny day...

Thanks to Gerry Ward for filling in the blanks in our knowledge about the gorgeous Clock House:

"The Clock House was build around 1855, by Sir Denham Orlando Jephson. He was an amateur architect who is said to have designed this house after he had returned from an alpine holiday. The Clock was brought from the tower of the Old Mallow Castle. The bell was cast at Millerd Street, Cork. The bell tower became dangerous and was removed c1970, but was restored in 1995."

Date: Circa 1901??
