"Having doctors and medical researchers from overseas countries as students had put Newcastle on the world map, the Federal Member for Newcastle, Mr Allan Morris, MHR, said on April 27.
Mr Morris cut a ribbon to perform the official opening of new officers of the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Wheeler House, opposite the David Maddison Clinical Sciences Building, in King Street, Newcastle.
the Director of the CCEB, Professor Richard Heller, Professor of Community Medicine, said the provision of improved premises has an important stage in the development of postgraduate education for clinicians and researchers from the Developing World as well as Australia.
He said the teaching program had elicited increasing interest in recent years, the enrolment now standing at 37 full-time or part-time students, including 13 from overseas.
He expressed thanks to the people who contributed to the achievement of converting a derelict wing of the old Nurses' Home into a new suite of offices.
The provision of space for the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics was made possible by a grant from the Federal Government.
Newcastle is one of four training centres for overseas clinicians and is part of an international network funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Many doctors in overseas countries who were trained at the Centre are now performing research into the major health problems of their countries.
The University of Newcastle is the only university in Australia offering this training."

At the JDRF walk yesterday there was a table with info on a clinical trial for newly diagnosed type 1s.
Daniel almost got into a clinical trial. We had our plane tickets and were a week away from traveling when they study group called & said their funding was all used up and they could take no more new patients.
That was a tough day.

It takes 3 1/2 X 4 1/4 sheet film in regular wooden holders and has a 2 inch f 6.3 Wollensak Velostigmat lens and was used mainly for medical and dental pictures. BTW, the bulb socket is directly behind the camera body and can be seen reflected in all eight sides of the reflector.

The Clinical Skills Center provides opportunities for students to learn in settings that are similar to areas in which they will practice.
The Clinical Skills Center includes a Ready Room, 10 Large Exam Rooms, Six Small Exam Rooms, a Hospital Suite and two Simulation Suites.
Students will hone their skills by working with high-tech, life-size mannequins that breathe, speak and bleed. With computer programming, the mannequins -- complete with heartbeats, pulses and lung and bowel sounds -- also exhibit symptoms of disease and react to treatment.
Research shows that patient simulators enhance patient safety by providing students realistic learning opportunities that boost confidence and skill proficiency. The clinical skills lab will improve the clinical skills of students and enhance multidisciplinary training.
Students also will practice on live simulated patients, or people who are trained by UNMC to emulate real-life situations that clinicians will encounter.
Each room is equipped with two video cameras and a microphone that provides digital video and audio recording and playback capability for teaching and critiquing students. Two rooms have one-way mirrors for observation. An intercom system aids communication between faculty and students.

Nutrition is an integral part of healing and maintenance of health. The conference was designed for medical, nursing & nutrition professionals who were interested in learning nutrition assessment tools, early enteral nutrition, approaches to treat critically ill neuropatients using parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition, immunonutrition, disease specific nutrition. In addition, malnutrition may contribute to increased morbidity through its effects on immune function, post surgical infection, requirement of ventilator support, increased length of stay in the ICU and delayed wound healing. Although other factors influence post transplant outcomes, nutritional status is the only reversible factor. On Tuesday, December 5, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID–Needham) hosted the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Outpatient Clinical Center, a 37,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. Over 100 community members and leaders, physicians, nurses and staff celebrated the occasion together, led by president and CEO John Fogarty, chair of the Board of Trustees, Stephen E. Vanourny, and State Representative Denise Garlick. Construction commenced after the ceremony and will conclude in 2018, with doors officially opening in early 2019. The new four-story center will bring expanded outpatient services to the community in the areas of cardiology, GI and orthopaedics.
