Refinery Corridor Healing Walk #3

Benicia to Rodeo, California June 11, 2017 - 3rd of 4 walks this year along the Refinery Corridor in the East Bay. Organized by Idle No More SF Bay, this 10.5 mile walk started in Benicia, home of Valero's Benicia Refinery, crossed the Carquinez Bridge and then passed thru the heart of Conoco-Phillips 66 “San Francisco” refinery.

Within minutes of the early morning start, walkers had the extremely rare opportunity to observe 2 Bald Eagles fishing and hanging out along the bay. And then, almost as if scripted, what started as a bright, sunny day turned increasingly windy and as the walkers approached the Conoco-Phillips 66 refinery, dark, menacing clouds formed, complete with lightning and eventually rain.

These walks have been bringing native people, local communities and those concerned about the health of the planet together to envision a healthier future, since 2014.

The next walk (July 16, 2017) will cover the section of the Refinery Corridor from Rodeo to the Chevron Richmond refinery. It will be the very last of a total of 16 walks that have happened over a period of 4 years.

These walks have done an outstanding job of connecting communities and issues and providing insights and ways to connect to the fierce battles being waged in our own back yards for "Clean Air, Water & Soil

Safe Jobs, Roads, Railroads & Waterways

A Vibrantly Healthy Future for All Children

A Just Transition to Safe & Sustainable Energy"

I learned in Yosemite that there are reasons for pull outs. I have learned on the Central Coast of California that there are reasons for pull outs. There are sea stacks like those I have admired in Oregon. Everything is here. Including (listen up friends from Utah) clean air.

Another university has been able to declare the entire campus free of tobacco use while on the premises.

Does this prohibition include "vaping" (the use of electronic 'cigarettes')? YES! (See brochure below.) Stores and people in charge of posting regulations hardly know how the sign should read nowadays--the world changes so fast.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_cigarette

The two major colleges in Asheville have not yet been able to bring themselves to adopt this policy. Why not? They 'compromise' by declaring several "smoking points" where puffing students gather to exercise their habit, thereby polluting the air for passersby. Whenever I am crossing campus, I must make wide detours to avoid these smelly places.

The Oxford Dictionaries' word of the year for 2014 is "vape".

NASA astronaut Kevin Ford, Expedition 34 commander, performs maintenance on the Amine Swingbed in the Destiny laboratory. The Amine Swingbed investigation determines if a vacuum-regenerated amine system can effectively remove carbon dioxide from the space station atmosphere using a smaller more efficient vacuum regeneration system. Although designed for human spaceflight missions where ample access to the vacuum of space is available, the technology can be used in earth applications if access to a clean purge gas supply is available.

Petroleum makes the world go round, doesn't it...

If this were a "Tardis" (a magical phone booth for transporting "Dr. Who") all of our transportation fantasies could come true! Maybe Algore will start working on that soon so we can all be saved from our Doomsday devices. Until then... "Fill 'er up!"

A question for you to ponder... If all the polar ice melted, would it be enough to flood the planet? Do you really believe it could? Let's leave aside the calculations about the mass of the ice versus the size of the planet for absorption of all that liquid runoff, because it's at least partially irrelevant and easy enough for even a child to prove. When's the last time you had a cup of ice water overflow because the ice melted? Ever happened to you? The proposition that polar ice melting will flood the planet could hardly be more absurd. Anyone with a glass of ice water can see it for themselves. Admittedly this only accounts for the seaborn ice that's not over the land, yet the seaborn ice is a huge factor in the overall equation accounting for from thousands to tens of thousands of square miles of ice.

Algore would've had a coronary if he'd have been around at the end of the last Ice Age wouldn't he have? All that "man made" global warming with neither a computer, nor a microphone with which to convince the lowly peons of their imminent demise. Only God knows how mankind has ever made it this far without having to move our huts out of the rising salt water. Ohhhh... maybe we just moved the huts. My bad! (...or did all "intelligent" life die at the end of the last Ice Age?)

The earth has a well established history of repeating itself in it's weather patterns, which demonstrates that it heals itself and finds an equilibrium. We've gone from warming periods to Ice Ages and back again. If it could be proven that we are in "another" warming trend, it wouldn't be a cause for alarm. Our life spans just aren't long enough to see both ends of the cycle so we are easily manipulated by the so called experts. The fact is that in the '70's they were telling us we were bringing the next Ice Age upon ourselves by our car driving/polluting ways. In all fairness, I might have missed an Ice Age between then and now... I've been known to miss things like that when I wasn't paying attention. We're a lot smarter now though, aren't we?

The "hypothetical" problem is a "manufactured" political problem about how to deal with lost titles to land (political boundaries)... it's not an environmental problem. It's about the "hypothetical" problem of people being displaced from their property by rising sea levels. I don't know anyone stupid enough to drown because they couldn't figure out how to move to higher ground. Do you know anyone like that? Think about the presumptions that have been made about your level of intelligence in order to convince you of the danger of "man made" global warming. Do they think we're daft? I think they just might... I think they're counting on it.

So... What about all this talk about "Carbon Dioxide"?

We need greenhouse gases to survive on this planet. CO2 is a greenhouse gas. They taught us in school that plants need Carbon Dioxide to live, and that they need it as humans need Oxygen to live. This is a truly symbiotic relationship. This is not a parasitic relationship. If it were a parasitic relationship we would only take and and give nothing in return. We would only drain the life out of the host organism until it died (or we died). Plants clean the air for humans, humans clean the air for plants. If we stopped producing CO2 (that's what we exhale along with animals and cars) plant life could die. It's a symbiotic relationship that we have. To add a little bit of "green" parlance to the discussion feel free to substitute the word "sustainable" for the word "symbiotic" as in this case the connotations are consistent.

Methane is another greenhouse gas that humans produce along with animals, rice paddies, and volcanoes. Yes, rice paddies produce greenhouse gases! There, I said it! Even some plant life and the earth itself produce greenhouses gases and then we have all the animals that are producing greenhouse gases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week right alongside us. Greenhouse gases are to plants what strawberry syrup is to humans! How could you even think of depriving plant life of such a treat? Have a heart! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_field

Ready for another greenhouse gas? How about "water vapor"? That's right, water vapor is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases are a vital part of the process of photosynthesis.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis maintains livable conditions for both plants and humans. Yes, we "need" greenhouse gases to live in this world as we know it. I shouldn't be so presumptuous about what you were taught in school... Maybe these were "Inconvenient Truths" that were never taught in your classroom. Maybe they were too busy teaching propaganda films. We've long joked about politicians who would tax us on the air we breathe if they could only figure out how to do it. Think about that, let it sink in... "Our" politicians (yours and mine) are trying to tax us on the air we breathe! Do you support them in this? Are you doing it "for the children"? Are you being manipulated???

If your friends could use a refresher on common sense send them here! ...and don't allow the politicians to steal both your tax money and your common sense!

Everyone join in! Three cheers for critical thinking skills! Pass them on! Just do it quick; they tell us that soon we'll be up to our eyeballs in seawater!

P.S. Please leave a note about where you saw this if you're so inclined. I've had many viewers outside of flickr.com and I'm curious to know where it's being seen. Thanks

It seems mine's one of 79,119 Mercedes ML320 vehicles that may of been affected by faulty welds on the catalytic converters. Interestingly customers of Mercedes Benz in the USA were contacted about this and requested to go into the dealerships to have theirs checked and replaced free of charge if needed.

No letter to me from Mercedes UK?

Models affected:

Serial Number Range:

Model 163.154 Chassis End Number from A036519 to A260405

Model 163.172 Chassis End Number from A057639 to A260575

Lets see what my Mercedes Benz dealer here in the UK has to say, since my chassis number indicates that mine is one of the vehicles that should of been recalled!

I'm told by Mercedes customer services in the UK that there as never been a recall on this vehicle relating to this problem either in the UK or the USA? Funny that?

Here is the Enviromental Protection Agency's entry for these vehicles stating the civil penalty relating to this defect in the USA?

Kinder Morgan wants to triple its capacity to move tar sands crude from Alberta to the west coast of Canada via the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. This tar sands crude would likely be transported to refineries up and down the west coast, including those in the Bay Area, increasing the pollution of air, water and soil... and this at a time when it is critical that we transition off of fossil fuels to lessen the worst effects of climate change. No consent. No pipeline.

The title says it all. It makes about as much sense as spending multi-millions of dollars, possibly billions, on conservation projects that are ruining employment in this nation. My God, the Creator will take care of the pollution; He will decide when there is too much heat or too much cold in any particular area. Before men and women were placed here, there were numerous climate changes that had nothing to do with industry (there was no industry); there were numerous examples of centuries that were affected by pollution from volcanic ash; astroids caused many horrific events, all without the aid of man or woman. And we are going to ruin a nation by limiting energy to CLEAN ENERGY. This is a joke. It might be a project for a merit badge or a requirement for becoming an Eagle Scout, all admirable attempts to be environmentally conscious, but the time has come to "put away childish things" and get serious about getting men and women jobs that will create energy without manuels that are 3000 pages thick with details about limitations about keeping the air clean. The earth has been here billions of years, men and women might live to be one hundred, but the average lifespan is somewhere in the early 70s for Americans. Now comes the CLEAN AIR COPS TO TAKE AWAY THE JOBS AND CLEAR THE AIR. IN THE MEANTIME, another volcano explodes and clouds the air for the next fifteen years. Hopefully, this won't happen; hopefully, an astroid will not land in some foreign capital and reek atmospheric ruin. All things are possible...

A few more shots from Chicago's Botanical Gardens - there's so much that is in full bloom right now! While it may seem like I'm shooting a miniature bench or using a tilt-shift lens causing such an effect, neither would be the case.

There are some branches that are extending out over the branches as well as a branch from a different tree hanging just inside the upper-right side of the frame that are pretty close to me. Shot with a wide aperture, perhaps that might give the illusion of a miniature effect.

gotta love it ; )

I had the week off from work and wanted to check out the Garden Of Gods monument in Southern Illinois. It was a beautiful drive and the weather was perfect. Many of trees still had some very orange leaves which made quite a contrast to the conifers (pines) in the frame. The park was quiet and serene (the park only had 2 other people in it aside from myself). I had to do some hoping around the big stones to get a good vantage point - risking life-and-limb.

What is the story behind your artwork?

"Our Daisy troop is made up of kindergardeners and 1st graders.

When trying to decide a focus for the pannel, you can imagine all the

wonderful ideas we had. There were so many in fact we had to just say

"keep it Green" so we could save the animals, recycle and have clean air.

My girls really took this to heart and we had great talks about what

they could do to help at home, school and in the community."

A new study led by a NASA scientist highlights 14 key air pollution control measures that if implemented could slow the pace of global warming, save millions of lives and boost agricultural production. All of the control measures focus on either limiting black carbon or methane, pollutants that exacerbate climate change and damage human or plant health.

The research, led by Drew Shindell of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, finds that focusing on black carbon and methane measures could slow global mean warming 0.5ºC (0.9 ºF) by 2050, prevent between 700,000 and 4.7 million premature deaths each year and increase global crop yields by up to 135 million metric tons per season. While all regions of the world would benefit, countries in Asia and the Middle East would see the biggest health and agricultural gains from the emissions controls.

The new study builds upon research featured in an assessment report published last year by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

In this slideshow, take a closer look at some of the control measures that Shindell's team considered.

Title:

Tobacco or Health: Choose Health

Creator:

Mullick, Biman

Date:

1988

Description:

In 1988, the World Health Organization celebrated its 40th anniversary and the first World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), a global event where smokers around the world united to break free from their dependence on tobacco. Established to raise international awareness and support tobacco-free initiatives, the first WNTD honored 11 organizations and 29 individuals for their work in promoting the concept of tobacco-free societies. Artist Biman Mullick was one of the recipients, chosen for establishing CLEANAIR, a non-profit organization engaged in drawing public attention to the effects of smoking on health and the environment, and for creating a series of posters that politely, strongly, and humorously deliver the message that non-smoking is the norm. The image in the poster signifies an opposition between smoking and health (or smoker and nonsmoker), suggesting a choice for one is a choice against the other. The headline presents the viewer with a choice between tobacco and health, while an abstraction of a human head chooses flowers over a cigarette (environment over smoking).. NOTE: Original is slightly blurry.. NOTE: Words at the bottom of the original slide's image were cut off.
