First day of retirement: clean out the office closet of all the books and magazines I've been saving to read "when I get to it".
When you've lived in the same house for over 20 years, you accumulate massive amounts of junk. Time for a massive cleanout. But I'm adamant that a cleanout won't mean just trucking everything up to Sonoma.
So I did a ruthless purge and organization of our bathroom drawers today. Believe me, this is post Bathroom Holocaust. Because we are a family that can't ever resist stealing all the bottles of shampoo and conditioner from every hotel we stay in. And Andy travels a lot for business. So the only bottles that stayed were the UNOPENED ones. Sad.
But at least I got to some important safety precautions. Like labeling the doggie rectal thermometer (in center front) "Don't Use". I was worried about that.

The chicken house has two bays for raising chicken, each with an easy cleanout chute. There is also lots of room for storing feed and other supplies.

The "cleanout" happens to be right next to where the trailer gets parked in the driveway. It will be nice to have. For the record, both the city and state authorities were contacted for permission to install the cleanout, and it was considered a "plumbing repair" for which no permit was needed. Total cost: $60 for plumbing parts, and some sore muscles :)
At first we though the water was coming out of the cleanout. Then we realized it was coming out of the wall. When our plumber opened the wall, we found that the plumbers who had done the waste line work had failed to hook the kitchen drain lateral back up to the new waste line. So water from the kitchen sink (and dishwasher) had just been soaking into the earth, and then had started to slowly back up in the pipe, coming out of an open pipe in the wall (the waste line plumbers had told us that line was dead; it was where the bathroom sink had joined the kitchen lateral, but the bathroom sink had been rerouted). We had the waste line plumbers back out the next day to take a look at it. Then fate intervened.
I knew where the cleanout was next to the house, but it was a guess as to where it turned to go to the street. The cheapest quote I could find for a locate was $120, and the most was $350. I figured I was worth a few hours of digging. I did get some AWESOME help from the excavator contractor who put the line in about 10 years ago. Ironically the sewer line ended up being less than 5' from the top of the cleanout opening.
You do not want to be downwind when the truck arrives with the big hose to clean out the Porta Pottie. OMG it was a horrible stench

Watch us work our way into a house crammed so full you cant get the door open. Our guys had to clear a path into the door so the workers could get in to clean out the chest high garbage. It was nearly even with the top of the refrigerator.
It took us about an hour to even get buckets into the place and really get to work. The floor was layered with many years of newspapers, magazines, clothes, food, and garbage bags. It was so packed that we had to pry the stuff out in layers.
There were many mouse and cockroach nests in there.
