Two sculptural pin cushions made for an exhibition in Tasmania where each artist was given one or more cigar boxes to interpret as they wished....so I wanted to respond to the gloriously fancy labels!
Freehand machine and hand embroidery on silk, stuffed with wool and pins (not shown), set into the cigar box.
Dimensions:
Mixed media piece with a cigar box covered in old dictionary pages and painted with alcohol ink, then sandpapered to age it. Canada Dry illustrations are from an old ad in Life magazine from the late 40's or early 50's.
Two interesting pieces. The cigar box mirror is quite the tribute to re-using/recycling, as is the bullet-crucifix.
"World War 1 - Trench Art Crucifix.
Believe It Or Not! this crucifix is made from spent bullet shells fired during a battle in France during World War 1 (1914-1917)! This particular crucifix was acquired by Ripley's from the estate of England's most famous Warlock, Dr. Gerald Gardner, one of the founders of the Wiccan religion."

BACKSTORY: Ripley's Believe It Or Not! museums kick ass! Definitely worth the ~$13 admission. We spent several hours looking at things and photographing. And no two museums are alike -- I've been to at least 2, possibly 3. Sure, they may have some of the same wall prints and statues, but the actual items are often one-of-a-kind. Find the museum nearest to you with their official museum locator app.
Also, note that I did not repost every one of Vicky & Ryan's pictures. You might want to click through and check out some of their other pictures from the museum as well!
This cigar box is a vintage "meditation" wooden box. I altered it and hand painted the furniture and accessories to make a little dollhouse world :). I installed a wee operable window, wallpaper, and curtains. Sitting room comes with dressing table w/mirror, porcelain tea cup and saucer, letters from friends, LED battery-operated hurricane lamp, rocking chair w/pillow, rug, clay roses in pitcher, and teddy bear.
All furniture and accessories are 1:12 scale.

I have decided that my new hobby will be making a cigar box guitar. I have never played a guitar or smoked a cigar, so I think that I have chosen well. I have no bad habits, yet. These boxes cost $1 or $2 each at a couple of the local cigar shops in my area. After I buy the necks and a few supplies online I will be ready to start building.
Another cedar cigar box with a sliding top. After a base layer of white clay, I added a second layer of textured sheets which I cut into strips varying and rotating their application. Obviously the strips also create more interest as well.
When done, I glazed with raw sienna, then burnt umber. While I was not striving for a faux finish per se, the end result has the look and feel of bone or old ivory.
After that I added a natural agate, which is really quite pretty, striated in shades of cream through umber & black and which will show up better in future photographs.

It has everything you need to paint pictures up to any size when you add your own items.
You can paint 16" x 20" by using a watercolor light weight board.
Just finished this weekend! My shabby fairy cigar box dollhouse features a real working window, wood plank floor, tiny clay bricks and plaster walls and a battery operated LED wall lamp.

Just testing some of the brushes I bought a while ago.. The Tidwells and Mack Series 30 Dagger on one of my dad old wooden cigar boxes.. Nothing serious and just for fun..
EDIT: It´s hard to stop when I first start, so I replaced the photo..
This cigar box is a vintage "Meditation Natural" wooden box. I altered it and hand painted the furniture and accessories to make a little dollhouse world :). The painting technique I used required multiple layers of color and crackle to get this shabby look. Gold highlights were brushed on to give a little sparkle.
I installed a wee operable window, wallpaper, and curtains. The curtains are topped with handmade paper roses, tulle, gold ribbon and pearls.
This sitting room comes with dressing table w/mirror, porcelain tea cup and saucer, mail, LED battery-operated working hurricane lamp, rocking chair w/ handmade pillow, rug, clay flowers in pitcher, and teddy bear.
Size of the box is 6 1/2" x 6 3/4" x 2 1/4". All furniture and accessories are 1:12 scale.

This is my second pinhole camera. This one is also made from a cigar box, but this time I covered the box with leatherette from Camera Leather. I used brass extensively to make it somewhat ornate. The pinhole is from Lenox Laser and is held in place by a rubber O-Ring. They both sit in a closet pull cup. I used a brass washer to put the pinhole at exactly 90mm from the focal plane. I was able to get the washer laser engraved, to give it a commercial look. I took my first two shots and they are currently being developed. Here is an image with this camera..
