When I recently talked with an old schoolmate about the Dom Tower (the most important church tower in the city that I live in), we both agreed that it has been restored in a fantastic way.
In beautiful light it is a feast for the eyes, and we were happy that they have taken of the cigar box (for a picture of that box see www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/52100247193/in/album-...).
Now I don't find it easy to get a really good photo of the Dom. The streets are often littered with people, parked cars and many ugly houses. If you get too close, the tower will fall over (if you don't have a tilt-shift lens).
Coincidentally, I walked past the Karel de Vijfde hotel, the evening light had just come out from behind the clouds, and a beautiful bush was changing color.
Hopefully I have put the Dom in the spotlight with this image. The official celebration of the end of the restoration will take place on November 9.
My Great Grandparents were Victorians, and after a dinner party, my Great Grandfather used to enjoy sitting with his male guests in the dining room, after the ladies withdrew to the drawing room, where they drank port, brandy and muscatel, smoked cigars and were treated to a slice of Stilton from a large cheese wheel. Stilton is an English cheese, produced in two varieties: blue, which has Penicillium roqueforti added to generate a characteristic smell and taste, and white, which does not. My Great Grandfather only ever ate Blue Stilton. Even on nights when they weren’t entertaining, my Great Grandfather used to indulge in a snifter or brandy and a slice of Blue Stilton in his study after dinner. I remember him doing so, and it is he that I have to thank for my love of Blue Stilton and other blue varieties of cheese to this day. He used to indulge me, in an effort to teach me about cheese and broaden my palate, by giving me a small slice to eat. The more time that passed, and the cheese wheel reduced in size, the stronger the taste and aroma of the cheese became!
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 13th of June is "cheese". Now, I know you are going to say that this should be a macro shot: and it is. What might surprise you is that everything in this photograph, from the flowers to the cigars, the bottle and glasses to the paintings on the wall, and even the cheese itself are all in fact 1:12 miniatures from my extensive collection which I use for photography purposes. Although not exact, this image very much reflects what the sideboard in my Great Grandparent’s dining room looked like when I was a child: very much of that Victorian and Edwardian era. My Great Grandfather was a cigarette smoker more than a cigar smoker, but he always had a box of them to offer to guests. Anyone who follows my photostream knows that I love and collect 1:12 size miniatures which I photograph in realistic scenes. The artifice of recreating in minute detail items in 1:12 scale always amazes me, and it’s amazing how the eye can be fooled. I hope you like my choice of this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

As the main focus of my image, the cheese wheel of Blue Stilton came from Beautifully Handmade Miniatures in Kettering. The knife, gilded white plates and stained wooden box of cigars also came from there.
The vase of red roses on the sideboard is beautifully made by hand by the Doll House Emporium.
All the brandy snifters on the silver tray in the background I have had since I was a teenager. I bought them from a high street stockist that specialised in dolls’ houses and doll house miniatures. Each glass is hand blown using real glass. The carafe on the same tray I bought at the same time. The tray was made for me from silver metal by my Grandfather, who was very clever and gifted with his hands. The 1:12 artisan bottle of brandy was made by Little Things Dollhouse Miniatures in Lancashire, and is made from glass and the label is a copy of a real brandy label.
The paintings on the wall are from Amber’s Miniatures in America, and the flocked wallpaper is beautiful hand embossed paper given to me by a friend to use with my miniatures.

I found this old pinhole camera I made years ago, from a wooden Special Edition My Father cigar box, measuring about 7" X 1" X 1". I drilled a hole in the lid, painted the inside matte black, mounted a 0.2mm pinhole in the hole, and placed a slice of Arista Ortho Litho film inside, exposing it for 17 minutes. (developed in FA-1027, 1:14) I think I may need to use this more often.
It makes a 3/4" X 3.5" negative.
As I was looking around for something to photograph for this week's Macro Mondays "Label" theme, this caught my eye. It's an old Chesterfield cigar box with what looks like a relatively ancient piece of white tape on it, on which the words "Old pictures" is written. The tape label is deteriorating, and the box is coming apart in places; the lid was held on by pieces of Scotch tape which are now broken too.
The box is filled with vintage photos from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, including many of family members that I recognize, others not. Most are in reasonable shape, but a few, such as the one shown here, are torn.

Two boxes that once contained cigars and cigarettes. The metal one is pre-WW2 and was a presentation metal box of Marcovitch ‘Black & White’ brand cigarettes. The wooden one is from the 60’s and originally held cigars made by B.A.T in Africa. That stood for British American Tanzanian tobacco.

Iron-stone concretions to be cracked open looking for fossils. There is an area south of Chicago where the land was strip-mined for coal. The overburden of soil contains fossils from the Pennsylvanian era. These fossils were composed of plants and animals living in a very shallow sea and swamps. These organisms died and were buried in an iron rich mud. Over millions of years, they fossilized inside these brown iron rich concretions. Fish, insects, plants of all kinds, leaves, amphibians, arthropods and Illinois only State fossil, the Tully Monster. This lagerstatten is called Mazon Creek. A lagerstatten is a place where there is a concentration of fossils of great variety and of one geologic era. These concretions come in many sizes and are usually flattened ovals to round stones of this brownish color. They are strewn in the overburden and weather out or are dug out of the ground. One needs to crack them open by repeatedly freezing and thawing them or by using a rock hammer to open them. Maybe one in 30 yield a recognizable fossil.
This cigar box is a vintage "meditation" wooden box. I altered it and hand painted the furniture and accessories to make a little dollhouse world :). I installed a wee operable window, wallpaper, and curtains. Sitting room comes with dressing table w/mirror, porcelain tea cup and saucer, letters from friends, LED battery-operated hurricane lamp, rocking chair w/pillow, rug, clay roses in pitcher, and teddy bear.

I'm working on a series of wee fairy houses within vintage wooden cigar boxes. I found this teddy bear furniture at Hobby Lobby recently and plan to distress, stain, size and fairyize it to fit nicely within the boxes. :)

Homemade 4x5 cigar box pinhole camera I have changed the focal length from 59mm to 44mm and made a new pinhole of 0.32mm, This was a 16-second exposure on expired Fomapan 400 rated @ 200 ISO and semi stand developed in Rodinal 1+100 for 1 hour.

Surprised this one is not more blurred to be honest, I rested the cigar box pinhole on the edge of the bin and held it there for a good couple of seconds for the exposure. Looking down I am sure I could see the camera wobbling about.
Still, I am pretty happy with it, I like the flare from my home made pinhole and I seem to be getting the hang of imagining the framing.
