An actual relic. Circa 1900, this instrument is very similar to 1-string fiddles used in Yiddish Vaudeville.

De waarschijnlijkste verklaring voor de naam La Paz is dat het een verwijzing is naar dhr. Van der Pasch, een sigarenmaker uit Boxtel, die in 1813 een sigarenmerk wilde met een internationale uitstraling. In 2000 werd La Paz Sigarenfabrieken b.v. een onderdeel van Swedish Match, een beursgenoteerde firma met de hoofdzetel in Stockholm.

This one has been in my brain for over three years. My friend Steve is a musician and farmer who often plays at The Blue Moon in Charlottesville. He made this guitar himself.

I'm working on a series of wee fairy houses within vintage wooden cigar boxes. I found this teddy bear furniture at Hobby Lobby recently and plan to distress, stain, size and fairyize it to fit nicely within the boxes. :)

Plaque: The store passed through several owners until 1957, when it was acquired by the State of New Mexico. The building is a true time capsule. Much of the merchandise in this room is part of the historic inventory that dates to the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Plaque: John H. Tunstall, a young Englishman, constructed the store in 1877. Tunstall went into business with Lincoln lawyer Alexander A. McSween and cattle baron John Chisum. The store housed the new Lincoln County Bank, McSween's law offices and Tunstall's living quarters. Tunstall avowed that he intended "to get half of every dollar that is made in the county by anyone."
There was immediate rivalry between J.H. Tunstall and Co. and L.G.. Murphy and Co., who had established a large mercantile on the west end of town a few years earlier. Both sides hired gunslingers and their feud engulfed the entire county. By just a little over a year later, Tunstall and McSween had been killed and Murphy and Co. were bankrupt.

The Instruments of Art: Electro-Acoustic Mandolin
I made this using bits from a busted up scrap mando, driftwood from the recent high tides at Upnor & reclaimed tuning pegs from a couple of electric guitars.
The jubilee clip above the net has a driftwood scrap set into it to prevent any fret buzz by pushing the strings down below the height of the nut.
The sound holes are set with strainers from a recycled tea infuser (hence the mug of tea in a couple of the photo's).
Fitted with a large piezo in the soundboard to a 1/4 inch mono jack via a volume control knob: This little wonder sounds great - especially with a little bit of fuzz through an old Pignose battery amp.
The marker pen graphics of the back of the mando relate to being trapped in a bottle tumbling through the world struggling to break out and be heard.
A couple of the tuning pegs are 'skull' machine heads, coupled with use of the cigar box it points to the aggression of lung cancer.
Cancer research UK site advises that around 42000 people were diagnosed with lung cancer in the uk in 2010, that's around 115 people every day.

John is an amazing act. As one friend said to me today as we stood listening to him, "This guy is amazing... he's the 'Sun Ra' of one man bands."
And indeed, Johnny Lowebow is an amazing performer & artist. He builds all his own instruments - as do most cigarbox guitar artists - but perhaps more than that, he takes the musical performance genre and "pushes the envelope," or to be more succinct, he blasts it into outer space, outside the orbit of Earth.
John is, quite literally, a One Man Band. As a musician & performer, he is enthusiastic about his work, and his style is remarkable, if not unique.
His technique involves using one hand on the neck of the cigarbox guitar, and the other (his RIGHT) to strum and hold a single drumstick, which he uses to play upon the snare, the cymbals, or tom-tom. WIth his feet, he pounds out a beat on the bass drum, while his other foot is used for various effects, and or hi-hat.
Each instrument has a unique sound, varying according to the materials used, and the variety or type of pickups. Yes, these are amplified instruments, though not always.
Creatively, Johnny Lowebow's songs range from brief stories about a neighbor, or about his grandmother's recipe for how to cook cornbread, to a simple song stating his intent to "plow up my front yard and plant a mess of peas." John is from Memphis, and is most DEFINITELY Southern material!
Stylistically, he is as far removed from a crooner as the Andromeda galaxy is removed from our solar system. His vocal tonality is sometimes out of tune, as are his instruments when he pounds upon them in a vigorous tune. And as I recollect, I've never heard anything from him that could remotely be considered a "love song." No, John's style is as unique as he is, and is definitely one-of-a-kind. If at first you hear his work and don't appreciate it, don't worry. It'll grow on you. He's a remarkable artist & all-around performer!
I had this beautiful dichroic cabochon made by Anne Price of Aesthetic Designs that was really too big for a necklace. I put it on a cigar box and made a little treasure box. Ceramic tile, glass tile, tempered glass, mirror tiles, Tie Dye tiles, ball chain.

Ik hou ervan doosjes te beschilderen en te vermaken.
Ik vind mijn doosjes op rommelmarkten en in kringloopwinkels ,soms krijg ik er een van een sigearenroker.
Ik maak er pootjes onder en beschilder de binnen- èn de buitenkant.
Dit sigaren doosje (b.19 x l.10,5 x h. 9 cm) kan te kijk staan en gebruikt worden voor mooie gedachten, wensen of sieraden, knopen, sleutels en andere dingen die je niet graag kwijt wilt raken.

I like to reconstuct and decorate boxes.
I find my boxes in charity shops and carboot sales, or get them from cigarsmokers.
I put legs under I paint the box, inside and outside.
This altered cigarbox (19 x 10,5 x h 9 cm)can be used as a little hand created piece of art to sit on a desk or dresser or as a special place to keep jewelry, stamps, paper clips, buttons, barrettes, keys, medication, change or lovely dreams and good wishes.
