The Instruments of Art: Electro-Acoustic Mandolin
I made this using bits from a busted up scrap mando, driftwood from the recent high tides at Upnor & reclaimed tuning pegs from a couple of electric guitars.
The jubilee clip above the net has a driftwood scrap set into it to prevent any fret buzz by pushing the strings down below the height of the nut.
The sound holes are set with strainers from a recycled tea infuser (hence the mug of tea in a couple of the photo's).
Fitted with a large piezo in the soundboard to a 1/4 inch mono jack via a volume control knob: This little wonder sounds great - especially with a little bit of fuzz through an old Pignose battery amp.
The marker pen graphics of the back of the mando relate to being trapped in a bottle tumbling through the world struggling to break out and be heard.
A couple of the tuning pegs are 'skull' machine heads, coupled with use of the cigar box it points to the aggression of lung cancer.
Cancer research UK site advises that around 42000 people were diagnosed with lung cancer in the uk in 2010, that's around 115 people every day.
Built by Mike Lowe of Texas. It's a full size acoustic lap steel utilizing found wood and parts (the trapeze tailpiece is a horseshoe).
These instruments are amazingly affordable and play louder than a dobro.

Een passie voor dozen en doosjes.
Ik verzamel en 'verbouw' dozen die ik krijg en op rommelmarkten vind. Er moeten poten onder en grapjes op. Alle doosjes kunnen nog wel open en zijn geschikt voor het bewaren van mooie gedachten of fijne dromen. "HOOG IN DE WOLKEN" is gemaakt van een klein sigarenkistje.

I collect and reconstuct boxes. Some are gifts, others I find in charity shops and carboot sales.I put legs under and funny stuff on top. All boxes can be opened and are very good for keeping good thoughts and nice dreams. "WEDDING BOAT BOX" is made from a small cigar-box.
I used this box as a wedding-gift with some cash in it, money is not my favorite gift but the box made it a little more personal.
This fabulous altered vintage cigar box is my favorite so far! With black mini pom pom trim and a fabulous VERY vintage cameo brooch to dress up the top, who wouldn't LOVE to have decorate their studio?? It is filled with antique, vintage and new collage supplies.

This was hard to photograph and get the details. The cigar box is in the center attached to the rest of the structure. Other photos show the inside of the box. The cigar brand is "Sun Grown" (original label on the inside covered in clear glass) so this piece reflects the sun part, the red door into the sun area and the inside is a sunny day with 3D plants and hanging glass. 30" tall. I used glass, driftwood, slate, marble, shells, screw, wire, beads, pebbles, nails.

This box features a beautiful vintage cigar box style collage on the top of the lid, with Japanese Twilight imagery. A combination of handmade artisan papers, magazine paper scraps, and fine embossed foil papers were used to create an enticingly, mystical vignette in various shades of green and violet. Glowing green crystals of two sizes, are set atop the collage. The small beveled edge is done in a rich brown artisan paper with a mitered border, framing the collage smartly.The sides of the lid are covered in dark green and white magazine paper scraps.
The body of the box is done in our signature mosaic inlay paneling style, created with wrapping paper scraps, magazine paper scraps, foil paper and artisan paper, in hues of green and blue and brown. The bottom of this piece contains a magazine paper scrap image of the Japanese country side, and as always is, - signed, dated and numbered as one of a kind!
The interior walls and edges are covered in a fine embossed aqua foil paper, which is left unsealed so as not to disturb the foil finish. The bottom and top of the interior feature Japanese plant life images from magazine paper scraps. There is a hand framed rectangular glass mirror, up against the underside of the lid.The piece is sealed with a moderately glossy textured finish.
The box is 100% pine and functions on a set of two standard, brass mini hinges. We've installed a metal safety chain to prevent the box from opening past 90 degrees. The final aesthetic detail to this lovely piece is a vintage metal button with green enamel detail and a center rhinestone, that the we chose for a lid pull - a truly unique fixture!

Anya Burgess continues: “When he decided to make a fiddle, he whittled one out of cypress. After that, he decided that formica would be a good material since it was already thin. His son worked for the highway department and had access to the ‘highway orange’ paint that Wedisson used on his formica instruments. Marc Savoy, a good friend of Wedisson’s, jokes that you wouldn’t get run over if you were playing one of Wedisson’s ‘highway orange’ fiddles on the side of the road.”} .

Collection of vintage cigar boxes. I use them for decoration, photo props and storage in my messy workshop.
I received a wonderful gift of many very nice wood cigar boxes. This Twilight Treasure Box is mosaiced in evening hues with stained glass, glass gems, Van Gogh glass, ceramic tiles, and mini glass tiles with a large iridescent fused glass focal.

Improved version on the back of a cigar box. All clippings come from The Saturday Evening Post c. 1945, plus the library ticket.
An actual relic. Circa 1900, this instrument is very similar to 1-string fiddles used in Yiddish Vaudeville.

Shane Speal's main cigar box guitar. Built in 1996, it has been his favorite go-to instrument. Speal is slowly wearing a hole in the top.
It is covered with autographs by many of the cigar box artists who have shared the stage with him. It's also stained with sweat, grit and Speal's blood (see above the right soundhole).
Simply, a three string, stick-thru-box instrument (played with a spark plug socket slide) and an internal pickup made by Matty Baratto.
