Yesterday (23 July 2016) was the final day of operation for another of Greater Manchester's remaining local service operators, this time Checkmate of Mossley. However, it wasn't the first "last day" for Checkmate, as local service operation had ceased for a period between 1996 and 1998. The opportunity to see a plain white Solo doing endless loops of Shaw was one that I firmly avoided, so viewers will have to make do with some scans of a few slides that I managed to dig out from the early days of the firm.
Mossley businessman Sam Tandy already had his fingers in several pies, running taxis, as well as a bakery and a sauna and solarium. He began PSV operation at de-regulation, having won the GMPTE contract for the 352 service between Ashton-under-Lyne, Mossley and Denshaw. His first vehicle was this Bedford CF with a Deansgate "Red Rose" body, KDB 765P, which is pictured leaving Ashton bus station with Sam at the wheel in the first month of operation. Note the industry standard for new operators at the time of having everything laid out across the windscreen, i.e. destination board, Almex machine, and probably cash bag !

Week 41 of Ashley's project. This week the 52 Week group challenge is to pay tribute to another member by imitating one of their photos. Although Ashley isn't part of the group I wanted to do this with her - and this photo is an imitation of Dexell1827's wonderful picture of Dexter from last year. See it below in comments.
Don't look too closely, Clive tells me I have my King and Queen the wrong way round!
The second vehicle to join the fleet had prior experience of operating in the area, being a former member of the Dial-a-Ride fleet in Sale. Bedford CF / Reeve Burgess "Reebur" AJA 4T blends in nicely with the dismal backdrop as it leaves Ashton bus station. Note the destination board and Almex are still in their designated places ! This was the only shot I ever got of this vehicle (I don't think reliability was its strong point), so not the highest quality.

Checkmate in 13 movers played on Fritz with a couple of hints from the computer that I find very educational.
Lightmen playing chess. Prize to whomever can say which game the position is from. Hint: it's pretty famous. The prize is only bragging rights unfortunately... :)
Extra bonus bragging rights if you can name the artist and picture on the wall!
I'm sure if I like how this turned out, but I thought I'd upload it anyway as I went to the trouble of setting it up.
A really difficult one this week - I found myself struggling to come up with ideas. These pieces from my Chess set were one of the few things I could think of!
