Looks like it's down to the two queens. I'm not sure if Flattery or Bunny will take the board, but it's been fun playing!
You can read more about Bunny and Flattery at TalesAndTails.com.
The theme this week is all about childhood pastimes, and one of my very favorite things to do, was to play chess. It wasn't very popular with my family, so I often played alone. My father taught me, but after I won a game with him, he has never played again. Not that he didn't like losing a game, he just is not fond of board games, and figured that he had taught me well enough!
This is part of a set that I bought with my allowance when I was in Junior High School, (a very long time ago!) and I just loved the style...so detailed and romantic!

Embora o Rei seja a peça mais importante no Xadrez, é a Rainha que detém o maior poder!
Talvez seja por isso que discutir com uma mulher sempre acaba em “Checkmate”...

Vehicle standards improved with the arrival of a new Freight Rover Sherpa with Made to Measure body in 1987 (yes, a Sherpa was an improvement in those days !), and this Iveco Daily in 1988. It carried an incorrect plate showing FND instead of FNB for the first few weeks, until I spotted the error on this visit and told him to put it right !
On occasions, it was possible to take advantage of a "refreshment break" en route, when the driver called in to Junction Garage just outside Mossley to fuel up ! I am not sure if that happened when there was enough cash in the tray to pay for some, or if the driver had to keep the receipt, and hand the bill to Sam at the end of the shift.
This vehicle, and similar E184 CNE, would maintain the firm's services until 1996, when they were transferred to Glossopdale Bus Company. Checkmate carried on just as a private hire operator until 1998, when the firm (by then in the name of Sam's partner, Bernadette Poole) re-entered the local service market by winning the contract for the 418 local service in Oldham. Sam Tandy died on Christmas Day in 2005, and shortly after that, the business was sold to Joe Cox, who ran the garage where the buses were parked and maintained. Initially, he took on the two Mercedes Varios that were run at the time, but gradually the fleet became low-floor, with three 52-plate Solos running until the end. The operating area also spread out, with odd journeys being taken on where they could interwork with existing contracts, so buses could be seen running early morning and late evening journeys in Tameside, peak-hour trips from Mossley to Manchester, and off-peak occasional journeys in the Marple and Hyde areas. The latter were operated until the end, and were re-awarded to High Peak Buses. The loss of the 418 on re-tender was made up for with the gain of the Shaw local service, which also ran to the end, and will be worked by Manchester Community Transport from tomorrow. Sadly, the anonymous state of the fleet meant that it was never a priority for me to capture on film, and even the knowledge that the firm's days were numbered couldn't drag me out to see them, but it is still sad that another firm has come to an end.
