Here's an example of how DOF can be manipulated: (1) the focal length of the lens (not an issue here, because it was only a standard lens); (2) the aperture (yes, shot wide open at f/2); and (3) the distance to the subject (yes, shot at the minimum focusing distance). As a result, the DOF is very narrow.

A random link failed. Perhaps it was weak from the string-in-the-rear-wheel incident, who knows. The string in the rear wheel meant I was going to have to have the rear derailleur rebuilt. Now it will have to be replaced.
Instruction #4 - an example of human ingenuity which would otherwise go unnoticed. This was a bit of a tricky one and I can't seem to find examples of the kind of genuine, impromptu problem solving ingenuity that I'd hoped to find in response to this instruction, the kind that I've seen in other, poorer parts of the world, where ingenuity is often borne out of necessity. So instead I've opted for a clever bit of mass produced engineering, the type which I still think is pretty ingenious and is largely unnoticed - gear cogs and a bicycle chain.

This well-known Moortown pub has been shut for a few months now, since around May 2007. For the last couple of years it was just The Bull, previously The Chained Bull, Harrogate Road, Leeds
It was knocked down on June 9 2008 to make way for expansion of the Marks and Spencers store next to it.

While attending the Texas Renaissance Fair near Plantersville, Texas on the first weekend of November 2010 I stumbled upon the Chain Mail Fashion Show. Apparently this is an event that takes place shortly after each day's Grand Parade. The venue is unique - it is on the second story balcony over the Chain Mail shop - there isn't really a lot of room to work - and from a photographer's point of view it is tricky since there are several stands of chains to contend with - but other than that it was a fun show. Some of the models were obviously nervous about appearing in public - they stayed on stage about 4 seconds, but others were very good at it. Overall it was a very fun event to watch, but not for the kiddies!
