My grandson has rediscovered this dated cell phone that "rises from the ashes" so to speak every few months. We look at old pictures and see what games are still on it.

Cell Phone Photography

Eastern State Penitentiary had a radial layout, with cell blocks fanning out from a central hub.

And I decided to shoot people on cell phones, too. I am totally gob-smacked st the number of people holding them - outstretched as if they are waiting for a call, or on them, talking, regardless of whether or not they are with friends or family.

I was sitting in the student section and saw so many students on their cell phones during the game. So I took pictures.

A cell from the Soviet era. No windows are to be found here; the only light comes from a single bulb.

Up to 12 inmates at a time were held in cells such as this for weeks on end; their crime being nothing more than to joke about Stalin or oppose Communism.

At least one of these cells was rubber-padded; a feature which made it water-tight. Thanks to this, the authorities could place a prisoner in said cell, and fill it with water to the depth of a foot or so. The politcal opponent would then be locked in this watery confinement for days on end- with no toliet facilites. Needless to say, many cracked, and signed whatever their captors ordered them to.

Cell House 4 (1952) was the largest and most modern cell house at the penitentiary. Some inmates painted their cells and left drawings on the walls that can be seen today.

I took this pic on a Nokia cell phone. I like it so much it is now on here!

I forgot my camera and worked ten hours.

When a saguaro is not a saguaro

Cell-phone provider T-Mobile apparently found a palatable solution for desert-dwelling mobile users by putting the antenna inside a fake saguaro.

The hills and valleys of the Catalina Foothills can wreak havoc on cell-phone coverage. But residents — many who chose to live in the Foothills to enjoy pristine desert views — don't relish the idea of staring at antenna prongs pointing skyward.

"The neighbors didn't want an ugly tower," said Bob Kramber, a commercial real estate salesman who lives in the area.

Kramber said he likes the design of the phony saguaro, pointing out that for authenticity it even has a few holes that look like the ones woodpeckers and other birds dig into real cacti.

Jeff Oranski, who lives right across from the cell site, agreed that the antenna was cleverly disguised.

The saguaro design is unique to the Arizona desert.

"If I'm looking at it, I can tell the difference," he said. But it can be tough to distinguish it from the real thing if you only give it a quick glance while driving by, he said.
