With Intel's announcement of new faster and cooler(literally) chips for the PC known as the Core 2, you can expect the prices of older PC to fall.

I'm still using a Pentium 3 PC and dreaming of a low end Celeron notebook. For mobility I already have my PDA which has WiFi. The PDA is fantastic when it comes to posting to my blog (as I'm doing now) as well as answering emails on the go.

Only recently I felt the need for a notebook as the Merdeka Festival draws nearer. I remember how tedius it was to run from the tournament hall to cyber café to update the daily result. A notebook with WiFi would have been fantastic. Alas, I will not have the budget to buy a notebook for probably another 3 months so I have to train myself really well to using the PC and PDA+Wifi to post results this year. Posting text results will be pretty easy. However,a bigher problem will be the posting of pictures and possibly audio interviews of GMs from the event. That will involve bigger files and the PDA is simply not good at handling those.

Anyway for the long term, I'm keeping my eyes on prices on both the PC and notebook market to see if there is any big changes. I'll definitely be better equipped to handle next year's Malaysia Chess Festival.

I have got way too much old computer hardware. And I'm planning on moving very soon. So, I've been trying to go through it to pick out the stuff that's actually worth keeping to separate it from the stuff that should go to the computer hardware recycling place.

This is a bunch of stuff that didn't make the cut. Mostly old PII motherboards, Celeron processors, and ISA I/O cards, with a few wacky things (e.g., a NuBus Ethernet card) thrown in for spice. Still nowhere near done. Ugh.

The fully-assembled internals of the Deskpro.

This is a Compaq Deskpro I found in someone's pile of rubbish to be taken away by the council cleanup. I fully stripped, cleaned, restored, and reassembled it after adding a few cards. It's now _fucking pimp_ by 1999 standards, even if today's technogeeks may see it as laughable.

Final configuration:

- Intel® Celeron™ 300A/66 CPU

- 256MB RAM running at 66MHz

- 20GB Seagate Barracuda HD (System Drive)

- 4.3GB Western Digital Caviar (Swap Drive)

- Sony 4x DVD-ROM drive

- S3 Savage4Pro GPU with 8MB VRAM

- Tekram DC-315U SCSI II controller

- VIA VT6202 USB 2.0 (EHCI) controller

- 3Com® EtherLink III 10/100 NIC

- Creative® SoundBlaster™ VIBRA16X sound card.

This is what the Deskpro looks like without its external aluminium shell and plastic front.

It's now easier to understand why they used to call the huge mainframes "Big Irons" - boy does this look intimidating to a guy used to fairly modern cases!

Various pics of my Oscilloscope computer case.

Started lfe as a 1960's vintage Bell and Howell Schools oscilloscope. Gutted it, added a $10 "plasma disk" in place of the old CRT tube display, did some Dremel'ing, sanding, hacksawing and drilling...and now it's a computer case.

The 'scope itself was about $10 on eBay, the motherboard/CPU is nothing special, a Celeron D 315 2.13ghz and all the other parts are spares, extras, and scavenged stuff from my scrap pile.

The front panel buttons and knobs operate the DVD-RW drive open/close, turning the display on/off, and the reset and power switches.

For the 478-pin socket, same as the Pentium 4 478-pin socket.

This sign describes the history surrounding Wheeling Creek. It's located across the street from Monument Place and is near the Medicine Shop parking lot.

Most interesting is the point about Captain Celeron and his burying of the lead plates in the name of France.

You could say I'm on Hiatus, but really the holidays stress me out. That's

pretty much it... oh and I'm really busy at work now, which is good. I

received about $7000 to upgrade my computer lab, if you don't remember I

teach technology to people with developmental disabilities. Previously I was

working with 20th century castoff equipment with nothing higher than Win2000

and nothing faster than a Celeron. For the non geeks, that pretty much

cancels out any real hope at productivity or progress. However, that's all

gone now, replaced by 6 new HP all-in-one computers running Win7. I have new

software, new kinesthetic teaching aids, and a new lab being built in a

larger room across the hall. Things are good, but now I have to redesign my

program... hence why I've spent less time blogging.

I'm getting back on top now, and check back soon for more lifestreamy post

and whatnot... I'm done hiatusing.

Cheers.

Mother board of the first computer I build, an Abit BP6 used two Celeron processors, with overclocking I could get a combined 1 GHz from the two 333 MHz processors.

The awesome throwback to what I used 5 years ago, minus the Carebear stickers. Laura and I bought two of these at $50 a pop off a Charlotte friend. It has a 300 mhz Celeron CPU, nearly 400 mb ram, several SCSI drives, a 4x burner, a cd reader, flakey usb ports, archaic ISA sound card, VooDoo 2 video card, now running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Herron! :D

It's my basic IRC box, light browsing, and such. Anything that doesn't require sound, resolution above 800 by 600, or speed. :) Went back to this after my Dell OptiPlex GX-150 mini tower case died after a power outage, which itself was not great but had sound, proper video, and more hdd space in Ubuntu and XP.

*An SSD (solid state drive) is much faster than a HDD. It weighs much less, smaller and more efficient. Though SSD wears quicker than HDD and costs more for same capacity. An SSD has no moving parts. It is much lighter and faster (but also more expensive).

Our new bedroom PC. Real small -- about the size of a mousepad and 3.5" high. I really like the SD slot on the front. We only use it as a web surfing/email/casual gaming PC, so I ordered the minimum/standard specs: AMD Athlon 2650e 1.6 gigahertz single-core CPU (only 15 watts -- basically a laptop CPU), 2 gb ram, ATi Radeon HD3200 graphics. 250 gb hdd, DVD burner, Windows Vista Basic. all for $249. I thought it'd be slow with Vista, but it's pretty snappy -- faster than the huge 5 year old Celeron PC that it replaced. Most people use these Zinos as home theatre PC's but they also work great as basic computers. It makes no noise at all. The fans are whisper quiet.
