A friend of mine found this by the side of the road. After some cleaning of viruses and spyware that clogged it runs great. It's a HP Pavilion a705w with 2.93 Ghz Intel Celeron processor. I've since upgraded the RAM to 1.25 GB of RAM(up from the original 256mb) and I've got another 1 GB coming soon. Itr works great and is now my main machine.
Over the holiday (fifteen glorious days off) I found myself on a TAADD (Technology assisted attention deficit disorder) binge. It started with one PC that I wanted to format and gift to a less fortunate family, it then moved to gathering and setting up four more, this led to Open Source software experimentation. I am now sitting in bed with my trusty hound at my feet, writing in OpenOffice Writer in place of MS Word. I am not even sure why, perhaps I was infected with an OpenSource virus or something.
In setting up the gift PC's I decided that I should give Ubuntu a shot. I had read here and there that it was a well built interface that was a good crossover for Linux noobs. Wow, I am impressed. This isn't a first timers reaction either. As an IT provisional I do my yearly(ish) visit to OpenSource land to check out the growth and try to assess it's place in my world. I guess it has been too long.
The installation
The two machines that I set up were old HP Pavilion's running inadequate RAM and tired 1.3 GHZ Celeron processors. They were machines that have been shelved for about 5 years and were slated for the recycling center. I downloaded the latest ISO (8.10) from ubuntu.com and burned it to a CD. I popped it in and the installer took me through a few painless steps before launching into a long unattended process. The most difficult part for a beginner or non-nerd would be making the right choices in the partition module. For these installs it was an easy choice to delete all and carry out a clean installation. After about forty minutes, I was asked to reboot and the system was ready for some action.
The Interface
I found Ubuntu to be intuitive, stylish and surprisingly quick given the crap hardware that it was running on. For an avid windows user there were two notable distractions. The first was the taskbar being located across the top. This was easily corrected (or ruined depending on your perspective) by clicking-dragging it to the bottom of the screen. The second distraction was the single-click execution with the mouse. Users who have never experienced Mac or Linux desktops might be a bit confused about this. I knew about it from previous experiences and still found myself double-clicking everything. I am sure that in time this would become a learned adjustment.
The Software
This was one part that I was sincerely impressed with. When I traversed the options in the applications menu I found the OpenOffice 2.4 suite (all comparable with MS Office), Firefox, Evolution Email, a slick note taking / cataloging tool called TomBoy, F-Stop and Gimp for the digital photography buff, and RythymBox for digital media. This was all right out of the default install. Because I was set up in the “batcave” where I only have wireless access, I was not able to really kick the tires on the web software (no wifi card available).
Conclusion
All in all, this OS has got to be the best OpenSource solution that I have seen. It's out of the box functionality and intuitive interface make it a great choice for use on recycled or re-purposed hardware. I have been planning on adding a lunch-room PC at work for our warehouse staff, I think that I will be using Ubuntu to see what kinds of “average user” reactions I get.
The windshield is a replacement that is very close to the original shape, and made by Taylor, who made the original.

One hard drive has been removed. The cage is open at both drive bays. The yellow plugs are used to eliminate vibrations that would cause additional noise. This is a very elegant solution to mount the drives without having to use a screwdriver.
On the right hand side the power and SATA-3 connectors are visible. The box is very properly cabeled.

El stand de Toshiba en IFA 2014 está en el mismo lugar que anteriores años, y guarda una misma división en grupos de productos productos: tres grandes categorías formadas por televisores, almacenamiento y ordenadores.
Entre estos últimos, una de sus novedades son los Toshiba Chromebook 2, un par de nuevos portátiles con Chrome OS, una estética muy cercana a la de los Ultrabooks aunque un precio bastante menor. No son los más potentes, pero ¿para qué necesitar un alto rendimiento en un equipo tan limitado? Esta es nuestra toma de contacto con los nuevos Chromebook 2 de Toshiba.
No esperes gran potencia, no es necesaria
Las características de los nuevos Chromebook 2 no difieren en exceso respecto de los modelos originales, presentados en enero. Han mejorado ligeramente algunos aspectos y sobre todo han añadido un modelo con pantalla FullHD y 4 GB de memoria RAM, que puede resultar interesante para los que busquen una calidad extra.
A continuación repasamos la lista de especificaciones técnicas más importantes, muchas de ellas compartidas por los dos modelos:

Como veis el rendimiento no es uno de sus puntos fuertes, si bien es cierto que Chrome OS no necesita una gran máquina para funcionar correctamente. En nuestra breve toma de contacto con el modelo FullHD de 4 GB deRAM la verdad es que el sistema se ejecutaba muy fluido en todo momento, tanto en la apertura de aplicaciones como en la interfaz.
Evidentemente, dado el sistema operativo, las posibilidades de estos Toshiba Chromebook 2 son bastante limitadas en comparación con otros equipos, algo que ya hemos debatido tanto en el análisis de Chrome OS como en el de otro de los Chromebooks más recientes, el del Acer C270. Chrome OS está pensado para la navegación web, las tareas multimedia y la ofimática sencilla, todo en un sistema cerrado y limitado.
Una característica curiosa es esa firma de sonido Skullcandy. Una marca típicamente orientada al público juvenil y que ahora lleva el nombre del juego de altavoces de los Chromebook 2 de Toshiba. Nos da una idea de que uno de los objetivos de estos portátiles son precisamente ese grupo de usuarios así como el sector educativo, otro de los grandes destinos de la categoría de equipos Chrome OS en general.
Precio y disponibilidad de los Chromebook 2
En la presentación dentro de la IFA 2014, la gente de Toshiba Europa nos confirmó que los nuevos Toshiba Chromebook 2 llegarán al mercado próximamente, sin dar una fecha más concreta.
Nos aseguraron que el modelo básico con pantalla HD y 2 GB de memoria RAM heredaría el precio de la generación anterior, que actualmente puede encontrarse en el mercado por 299 euros. Por su parte, el modelo superior con pantalla FullHD y 4 GB de memoria RAM tendría un precio ligeramente superior, unos 40 euros más. No obstante estos precios no son definitivos, con lo que las cifras finales podrían variar antes del lanzamiento.

This is an RM Ascend 1000 series machine, in this case the 1010B. It has a Celeron D CPU and I think 512Mb of RAM.
These were old when I first turned up at my current school, and that was over ten years ago!
In fairness, whilst these machines were not nice to work on and were twitchy as hell to upgrade the RAM on, they did keep going. I want to call it a piece of crap but I reserve that honour for the RM-2020. Now THAT was a pile of crap.
Blessedly, in the face of tumbling revenues, RM now just box shift HP and Dell stuff like everyone else. I do believe they're still peddling their piss-awful 'community connect' network management software though. That was even worse than the hardware!

Nachdem jetzt 3 Leute (Stand 13.12.12) den Sony mit einem Stern bewertet haben, muß ich einfach ein paar Zeilen schreiben. Ich habe meinen beim örtlichen Fachhandel erworben, denn sollte mal was sein ist der Weg kurz und der Streß gering. Meiner ist mit deutscher Tastatur und in weiß. Beim Auspacken fällt das sehr elegangte Design auf. Es ist wirklich eine Augenweide. Noch eine Wireless Maus von Logitech und eine Laptoptasche dazu besorgt und schon passtŽs. Der Laptop hat Win 8 an Bord und startet rasend schnell. Mit einem kleinen Programm kann man die Kacheloptik überspringen und kommt gleich zum gewohnten Desktop. Sony installiert für meinen Geschmack zuviele Programme und Spiele standardmäßig, so daß man erst mal ausmisten muß. Danach habe ich die wichtigen Programme installiert und kann nur staunen wie flott der kleine zur Sache geht. Trotz einfacher Pentium-Ausführung klappt selbst Videoschnitt erstaunlich flüssig. Hier schließe ich dann zusätzlich noch über HDMI einen 27-Zöller von HP (2710m) an, um in Full-HD editieren zu können. Die Wartezeiten sind selbst beim Videoschnitt erträglich. Also für meinen Geschmack ein echt flotter Rechner. Preislich bewegt sich Sony gerne nicht um unteren Segment, doch das Gerät ist sein Geld Wert. Von mir alle möglichen Sterne.
