The dog-day cicada comes out during the dog days of August - typically coinciding with a stretch of very hot and steamy summer weather here in Iowa. The dog days are so-called because Sirius - the Dog Star - appears in the eastern sky just before sunrise now in late summer and sky watchers in ancient times believed the bright light from Sirius amplified the light coming from the sun rising soon after, causing this seasonal searing heat wave. That does sound like a pretty convincing scientific explanation to me. By the way, the "song" of this dog-day cicada is a very loud high-pitched whine sounding like somebody sawing wood with a chain saw. Try sleeping with a hundred noisy cicadas calling from the treetops around your house now.

Please say a prayer for our Little Bungee this day as we have decided to go ahead with another operation in an attempt to help him have a chance at a normal life.

As of this juncture, he is dizzy, can't walk straight and refuses food and water.

His surgery will attempt to remove a growth causing this unfortunate physical symptom interfering with his life.

He is still very young so perhaps he will be able to overcome this infirmary.

The stopper to my Tres Mujeres bottle of Tequila rests perfectly on the bottom of an overturned paper cup with its bottom cut out. I placing some fairy lights within the cup to light the stopper from below. The cup sits on a CD that is rimmed with the rest of the fairy light string, causing the colored shafts of light on the CD and side of the cup.

We don't seem to get a lot of clean CP units around here, so I felt compelled to stop and grab a pic of this one. CP AC4400 9768 gets some sun at the so-called Car Works yard in Madison, IL. It has either just left, or is about to enter Quality Rail Service for what is probably routine maintenance.

The Painted Lady is a long-distance migrant, which causes the most spectacular butterfly migrations observed in Britain and Ireland.

Each year, it spreads northwards from the desert fringes of North Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia, recolonising mainland Europe and reaching Britain and Ireland. In some years it is an abundant butterfly, frequenting gardens and other flowery places in late summer.

Painted lady butterflies have a pale buffy-orange background colour to the upper wings. The forewings have black tips marked with white spots; the hindwings have rows of black spots. The undersides are pale with blue eyespots.

Painted ladies do not hibernate in Britain; instead they migrate to and from northern Africa. They can arrive in early spring, but late May and June are more usual. They are fairly common across Britain, numerous in some years.

Females lay their small, green eggs on a range of species, such as nettles and mallows, but thistles are the general favourite. When the caterpillars hatch they begin to eat the underside of the leaf. As they grow, each constructs a tent of folded leaves fastened with silk.

Caterpillars pupate and remain suspended in a large tent of leaves until the adults emerge in August and September. The whole British population dies or emigrates to Africa in the autumn.

Caterpillars are black, speckled with tiny white spots and have a yellow stripe down each side. They are covered in spines.

I was advised quickly by some loyal contacts that there was some kind of marks on my upload yesterday. I never did see what you did and have no idea what caused whatever it was. Thus, I deleted it. But I thank you all for pointing it out. As you know, I am anything but a photographer and certainly not a technocrat on any level. I've never even had a cell phone. So the chances of me discovering what may have caused the problem are nil. Too bad, because I liked the photo and apologize for the deletion to those of you who commented and faved. However, it was obviously not what I thought it was.

To test as to whether this is a permanent flaw in some part of my process, I've uploaded a SOOC photo of Star and myself approaching the shore in a rowboat on the lake in the rain. Please let me know if you see anything which would lead you to believe the contrary. Remember this is absolutely SOOC. I appreciate your continued observations.

Tricolored Herons are quite common here in Southeast Florida but given their good looks and antics they are rarely taken for granted. Sometimes they fish like Reddish Egrets, throwing out their wings to cause shade from which they can more easily spot their prey. I see this more often in saltwater environments than fresh water. At Wakodahatchee Wetlands, a freshwater habitat where this image was taken, they tend to fish on the fly, catching small minnows by darting their bill underwater as they fly past. Snowy Egrets tend to fish the same way. In this image, the water was dark and the light was primarily landing on the bird, nicely separating it from its background. As long as I can remember, I have enjoyed utilizing what little grey matter is between my ears to say shocking or stupid things that make liked and loved ones give me back this exact look. It started with my mother and was perfected over my years of working with youth. Now retired, my bride is most often the recipient of my gift. She gives me this look for a second or two, shuts her eyes and shakes her head…granting me the win!

Serendipity! I met The owner of the ForeFathers Book Shop, Kieth Bierly, yesterday for the first time. Years ago he was Centre County commissioner and a political activist. These days his passion is history, particularly American, and collecting books…. On his desk in the store was this photo of the actor James Dean who became an American icon for his lead role in the classic movie, Rebel Without a Cause…… I like hearing which you prefer! I like the B &W because it “fits” the Jame’s Dean persona” …. But there is a certain oddity about the color that makes me think of Miami Beach in the 1950’s in a grade B Detective Novel with the Latin influences…..please see my public photo stream for the color version of this photo.

I've always found it very ironic that the one day in America designated for kindness and gratitude is also a day when the multitudes make a conscious choice to eat an animal when they don't have to.

It was my love of cats that made me decide to go vegetarian at 13 years old because I was taught to not discriminate against humans so why not apply the same to animals? How could I justify eating a pig, a turkey, a cow if I could never eat a cat or a dog? It made me question the way our society values some lives more than others and caused me to start thinking with a mind for social justice too. When systems say "It's ok to do this even when you feel this...." all you have to do is follow the money. Factory farming in this country in and of itself is a multi billion dollar industry that causes great harm to both animals and the environment. Why should we choose profit over the lives of animals as well as our own health?

There are so many stray cats in need of love and medical treatment. To me, it is like living in a city where you see people sleeping and begging on the street often. You feel like every dollar you give will never be enough. But, there's something to be said for when you are part of a vast world of great suffering and you help even one life.

This cat was found in a rescue orientated cat café and was actually provided with multiple medical treatments out of the pockets of the volunteers who worked there to keep it alive. One of the best cats I ever had, Buckley (named after Tim and Jeff), was a cat I adopted after a volunteer at the rescue agency paid over $2000 for a surgery, which I definitely would not have been able to afford at that time in my life. Buckley lived at least a decade in my arms and resembled this little guy. He would head butt me in bed and I'd lift up my blanket and he'd sleep and purr right beside me all night. When the time came for his life to end, I held him in my arms until his very last breath and I have no doubt he knew he was loved. All of this because someone said, "Yes, there is immeasurable suffering on this Earth but I can make a choice to make it less for this creature. "

Our choices matter.
