Off the water and back to the woods to soak up some of the remaining color which is holding fairly well, especially given the strong winds we've had the last few days. I went out specifically to take a bunch of photos to upload into my "new friend," with the single and not unrealistic (I thought) hope of being able to find them...which I did, but not until after numerous wrong guesses as to where I thought they seemingly should be...like "Pictures."
By the way, I appreciate your support and tips re: my new desk top (not a laptop as some seem to have guessed), and it progresses slowly. I really don't use a computer for much other than my photos so I haven't even begun to tap the capabilities of this one...and am uncertain as to whether I will even try or not. What I would like to find is the 90% of my photos which did not appear with the others when I transferred them from the flash drive to the new computer. 10% are in fancy new folders...the rest unpleasantly invisible. Everything sees very hit and miss...mostly miss for now causing me to simply walk away from the computer and find other occupations. My learning curve and patience have both suffered with old age.

Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes or fynbos. The family is Proteaceae. In local tradition, the protea flower represents change and hope. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape flora are thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape, where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in protea cultivation are birds, insects, and wind. Some Protea species exhibit both self-pollination and cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is preferred, though, as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Proteas usually flower during spring. But as autumn approaches, certain influences both inside and outside the plant cause the chlorophylls to be replaced at a slower rate than they are being used up. During this period, with the total supply of chlorophylls gradually dwindling, the "masking" effect slowly fades away. Then other pigments that have been present (along with the chlorophylls) in the cells all during the leaf's life begin to show through. These are carotenoids they give us colorations of yellow, brown, orange, and the many hues in between.
The reds, the purples, and their blended combinations that decorate autumn foliage come from another group of pigments in the cells called anthocyanins. These pigments are not present in the leaf throughout the growing season as are the carotenoids. They develop in late summer in the sap of the cells of the leaf, and this development is the result of complex interactions of many influences - both inside-and outside the plant. Their formation depends on the breakdown of sugars in the presence of bright light as the level of a certain chemical (phosphate) in the leaf is reduced.
But in the fall, phosphate, along with the other chemicals and nutrients, moves out of the leaf into the stem of the plant. When this happens, the sugar-breakdown process changes, leading to the production of anthocyanin pigments. The brighter the light during this period, the greater the production of anthocyanins and the more brilliant the resulting color display that we see. When the days of autumn are bright and cool, and the nights are chilly but not freezing, the brightest colorations usually develop.
8th July 2013 - A tribute shot of Hawker Hunter T7 WV372 (G-BXFI) taken at the departure day of the RAF Waddington airshow.
On 22 August 2015, this aircraft crashed into vehicles on the A27 main road during a display at the Shoreham Airshow in Shoreham-by-Sea, England, killing at least 11 people and injuring 16 others. Four people were hospitalised, with one, the pilot, in a critical condition.
It is the deadliest air show accident in the United Kingdom since the 1952 Farnborough air show crash, which killed 31 people. On 24 August, all Hawker Hunter aircraft in the United Kingdom were grounded in response to the accident.
My thoughts and condolences go out to all the families involved and hoping that Andy Hill (the pilot) pulls through and makes a speedy recovery.
The cause of the accident is not yet known although it looked like a power issue was to blame rather than pilot error from the video footage I have seen.

Groynes reduce longshore transport by trapping beach material and causing the beach orientation to change relative to the dominant wave directions. They mainly influence bedload transport and are most effective on shingle or gravel beaches. Sand is carried in temporary suspension during higher energy wave or current conditions and will therefore tend to be carried over or around any cross-shore structures. I wished I had photographed at this location when I was in the Badlands 3 years before, but it had rained and the ground was downright slippery. So, three years later, I went right to it. One prob though when I was scouting in daylight - I didn't have my compass. I'm worthless without my compass. So, when I returned after dark, I immediately could see I was way off the mark in terms of the direction of the Milky Way. Consequently I had to bumble around in the dark looking for compositions. Bumbling around amongst hoodoos and pinnacles is, for me, disorienting, and dropping breadcrumbs isn't gonna help me find my car when I'm finished. This wasn't my favorite composition in terms of my lighting - hard to get definition and texture in that uneven rock without causing unwanted black holes. BUT, this frame does have a swell meteor flashing through it. Maybe give it a click to view larger as the rock texture does show up a bit. I think I see my car out there in the low right corner too. 😉

The dog-day cicada comes out during the dog days of August - typically coinciding with a stretch of very hot and steamy summer weather here in Iowa. The dog days are so-called because Sirius - the Dog Star - appears in the eastern sky just before sunrise now in late summer and sky watchers in ancient times believed the bright light from Sirius amplified the light coming from the sun rising soon after, causing this seasonal searing heat wave. That does sound like a pretty convincing scientific explanation to me. By the way, the "song" of this dog-day cicada is a very loud high-pitched whine sounding like somebody sawing wood with a chain saw. Try sleeping with a hundred noisy cicadas calling from the treetops around your house now.

Dundas Square is Toronto's answer to Times Square with many advertising billboards. It is also site for outdoor concerts and festivals. It was a place for protests and demonstrations, until the authorities decided that in the name of Democracy, protests are only permitted for approved causes and for freedoms in countries far away. I was crossing the square, when the billboard above flooded the place with colour on otherwise grey drizzly day. The square was not always there. It opened in 2002 in effort to revitalize the area. To be honest, I should, but do not remember what was there before.
