This weekend, relaxation took the form of making these adorable, catnip-filled felt toys. When you use a template to trace the cutouts (you can print the templates I made for this project!), it's actually very easy to put them together.

Single pawedly this beautiful cat. has decimated my Nepeta. Known also as catnip it is like cannabis for cats - they adore it and become very silly after smelling it, rolling in it and eating it.

"Some members of this group are known as catnip or catmint because of their effect on house cats – the nepetalactone contained in some Nepeta species binds to the olfactory receptors of cats, typically resulting in temporary euphoria."

Catnip contains the feline attractant nepetalactone. Nepeta cataria (and some other species within the genus Nepeta) are known for their behavioral effects on the cat family, not only on domestic cats but also other species of cats. Several tests showed that leopards, cougars, servals, and lynxes often reacted strongly to catnip in a manner similar to domestic cats and while lions and tigers can react strongly as well, they do not react as consistently.
With domestic cats, N. cataria is used as a recreational substance for pet cats' enjoyment, and catnip and catnip-laced products designed for use with domesticated cats are available to consumers. Common behaviors cats display when they sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip are rubbing on the plant, rolling on the ground, pawing at it, licking it, and chewing it. Consuming much of the plant is followed by drooling, sleepiness, anxiety, leaping about and purring. Some growl, meow, scratch or bite at the hand holding it. The main response period after exposure is generally between five and fifteen minutes, after which olfactory fatigue usually sets in.

Naturally enriching our cats' lives. Every now and then we offer our cats this treat. They nibble some of it, roll around the floor and then zone out to quiet relaxation.
GiGi is a former feral cat i trapped and had spayed & released.. several months later found her collapsed in my yard, she had panleukopenia and was hours from death.. $1000 in vet bills and 2 months recuperating in my house and now she is a rolypoly happy indoor cat! I LOVE THIS LITTLE GIRL !!
Another true blue for the garden. 2 days after I first planted this, I saw that it had been uprooted, tossed aside, and the dirt was completely matted down. I stood there, puzzled, and then I smiled. Our friendly neighbor cat had found the catnip. I replanted it, it's growing nicely, and I leave the matted area there for the cat to roll in. His own little opium den........he doesn't disturb anything, and he likes to chase the squirrels away. Yay!

It was just Apollo and me, hanging out yesterday. I decided to share with him some cat nip from the secret stash in the kitchen drawer.
He's such a well-behaved little devil. He is starting to play, sometimes fairly aggressively, but only using his 'soft paws'.
Here he is upside-down on the carpet trying to hide in the stripe of shade caused by the joint in the middle of my patio door.
A lifer plant for me. I bleieve it si catnip. The flowers are very different from other mints withtheir very dissected lower peetal. Pelican Pointe, Last Mountain Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. 8 August 2024
