A wingless German aeroplane is loaded on to a trailer and strapped down. It still has its original painted insignia and number. Two soldiers are standing behind the plane inspecting it.

Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to reaffirm resolve against the enemy.

Kupu Americorps Intern Kristy Lapenta recently returned from a month long trip to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

She was there to collect boluses for use in school group outreach and education programs, but along the way captured these amazing images of the world's largest albatross colony.

Earlier today I was happy to discover that the previously reported on lone American Coot appears to have found a mate. Coots are not ducks though one would be forgiven for the misinterpretation given the way coots swims. However, coots’ association with the rail family, especially gallinules, become very obvious when they come out of the water exposing their lower legs and toes. Instead of webbed feet, coots have strong legs and disproportionally large lobbed toes. Although with some patience I was able to capture one of the bird on the shore, my main challenge was to avoid stepping on man-made trash lining the shore as well a excluding from the images the rubbish floating in the water and deposited on shore all around the birds. Made me sad for the wildlife trying to survive in spite of our negligence. REALITY CHECK - Although my photography tunes out the damage we do to the environment, rest assure that wildlife is often besieged and adversely affected by the way we at our detriment treat our surroundings.

I heard a noise in my kitchen and found this witch rummaging through my cupboards. Since I was afraid that she might bite me, I put on my oven mitt and grabbed her. Let me tell you, it was a good thing I thought of using the mitt; she fought, bit, and screamed like a banshee. I just wish I had thought of wearing earplugs too!

I LOVE THE FACT SHE WORE PANTYHOSE!

Three celery green pearls are captured within a handmade copper pendant. The pendant hangs from a sterling silver chain. The metals have been oxidized and buffed to expose a soft shine.

... found out about this just today. Thank you all so much for your favourites and comments! I really really appreciate it!

This bronze cannon was captured at the battle of Sevastopol, during the Crimean War, and was brought back to Ludlow, England in 1855.

On 5 November 1854 the Russians marched out of the besieged city of Sevastopol to throw off the allied British and French forces by mounting a joint attack with their troops from outside the city. Despite outnumbering their enemies five to one the Russians failed to achieve victory in what looked to be almost a foregone conclusion. The third major action of the Crimean War (following Alma and Balaclava), the battle fought in heavy fog at Inkerman proved to be a testament to the skill and initiative of the individual men and officers of the British Army of the day.

This build was inspired by medieval cryptids known as “wild men” or “woodwose,” which were very hairy humanoids who lived in the forest and shunned human society.

According to legend, hunters would attempt to capture these wild men by luring them with alcohol, getting them drunk, tying them up, and then trying to extract whatever secret knowledge the wild men might posses.

“It once happened in that country (and this seems indeed strange) that a living creature was caught in the forest as to which no one could say definitely whether it was a man or some other animal; for no one could get a word from it or be sure that it understood human speech. It had the human shape, however, in every detail, both as to hands and face and feet; but the entire body was covered with hair as the beasts are”

For a "Captured Fairy" swap on ATCards.com.

This is a fairy made from a photograph of Anna May Wong, an early star from silent movies. I've digitally colored her, and created some wings. The fairy is surrounded by artificial tree branches that have crystal ice on the ends. It's decorated with black ribbons and a couple small silver medallions -- one with a butterfly, one with a heart. The medallions are engraved with the words Joy and Love.
