Someone on flickr opened up to me about her feelings. It is hard to know what is the right thing to say about breast cancer. I only know how it has affected me. I will never be the same person I was before the diagnosis. I hope I said the right thing.

Here is a shot of my mothers hand just to show some scale. It's a big one, I'm just saying it was only a pound less than my son at birth. Stupid cancer...
Oh, it's in cold storage for 20 years. I'll see it again someday and take it out to lunch and tell it, "you suck." and I'll feel really good about it. Ha, Ha.
Cancer series, thinking of making a book out of this series, to sell and raise money for cancer charity, like the Creative Center that gives free art classes to people with cancer, keeping the spirit strong through art.
I posted a thread on Light Junkies called Light Painting Charity about creating a light painting group that would donate photos for a book to raise money for charity, a global LP collaboration. Looking for LP'ers and any advice in making a book, and maybe a website to sell the book and prints.

Ling Ling is best friend, companion and so much more to my daughter, Katia Solomon. Katia has fought cancer, treatments, transplant rejection and many side effects since age 2 in 2002. She has many delays and stopped growing at age 3. Ling Ling literally fell off our roof at 3 weeks old. He was and is her gift from God. She is my hero:)

Kim was a reluctant model for my [life:affirmed] project who, once spurred on by her friend and myself to take a "leap of faith" helped create the most kinetic and spontaneous portrait in the series. By the end of the session the young lady who slunk into the studio, unhappy that she had been volunteered by her friend was jumping for joy. That transformation, and knowing that it came about in part because of me, really lifted my spirits.
On April 27, 2011 Kim lost her battle with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. I know that wherever she is now she is hopping, skipping and jumping for joy because her pain is gone.

Envy.
I always thought envy was a petty emotion, that I was above that. Then I got cancer.
I used to listen to my friend complain about her bad day and wonder to myself, never saying it out loud when will my bad days be that irrelevant, there was no pain, no illness, no suffering, just a minor inconvenience that will soon be forgotten. I would listen to her concerns about doing well on her tests in college as if it were life and death, as I go to the hospital for my tests to see if my tumor by my heart is shrinking. Our life's became quite the contrast our concerns in life couldn't be more different hers to do well in life and mine to stay alive.
First time I felt envious wasn't over a person's wealth, car, or their relationships. First time I felt envy was over someone else's health.
She used to tell me that friendship is about being their when your friends need you most and for a few weeks she was there for me. But as summer ended she went to college, I went for radiation, and that friendship didn't last much longer. The second time I felt envy was for that friendship I used to have.
Now I don't get envious. I tend to feel thankful for the things I do have.
Exploring some thoughts and feelings from my cancer experience from when I was 21 and combining them with light painting, not sure if I'll use it for the light painting book I want to create to raise money for a cancer charity. I think sometimes the photos speak better for themselves, without the additional words.

I met Kendall when she showed up for the art bazaar my friends put together for me when I was first diagnosed. She's young and has been fighting colon cancer for three and a half years. I had eight chemotherapy treatments, Kendall has had eighty.
Kendall is in a substantial amount of pain and the cancer is growing at a rapid pace. She's chosen to stop chemo and enjoy what time she has with her husband. I visited Sunday, honored that she gave me a moment of her time to take her photo. I told her I could do absolutely anything she wanted with it. She said, "I want to look fierce, with fiery hair." Not a hard task for such a fierce fighter.
She asks that we all appreciate what we have while we have it.

When I went through treatment I didn't want to make friends with people with cancer, because when I was 7 my best friend died from cancer. It was hard to see this happen to a child and I didn't want to see any one else I cared about go through it. Years after treatment I started going to the Creative Center which offered free art classes for people with cancer. That's when I started making friends with people who had cancer. Some of them passed away but I'm glad to have met them. Sometimes the world can seem like a better place because of the good people you meet along the way. I think it would have been better for me to have done that earlier. Cancer can get easier when there's people around. Your not alone if you choose not to be. There's lots of good charities out there looking to help.

Cancer doesn't care it's Christmas. It can be rough being sick for the holidays. I've been seeing people on tv bringing gifts to children's hospitals, it's inspiring to see their faces light up with the generosity of strangers.
Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, New Year.
My very patient mom spent a day with me taking photos, after many hours and miles all over my hometown, I turned around to look for her, and this is what I saw...
Thinking about my mom and her journey until today
Top left: my grandparents had my mother's portrait painted on ivory in 1929 ... she was going away to college (Skidmore)
Top right: my mother and I when my father was away on Iwo Jima in WWII (taken in Jamaica, NY)
Bottom left: we lived in Morocco from 1954-1956 ... my father was in the Air Force then ...
Bottom right: my mother in December, 2009, she is now 98 and doing well ...
In a unique event organized by Fortis Cancer Institute, International star and cancer conqueror Lisa Ray today honoured Dr Mary Francis with “Fortis Spirit of Life Award” for her courages battle against breast cancer. Me and the two women Cheryl and I painted today. This is three generations here. I painted the lady on the left and Cheryl painted the one in the black shirt. Her daughter is in pink. both women flanking me are breast cancer survivors who wanted to be painted to celebrate their bodies. The lady on the right authored a book on her experience of surviving breast cancer three times. She is truly an inspiration. We painted them and she painted abstract paintings for each of us. It was a great trade and a great day for us all.
