Canada received 138 CF-188s between 1982 and 1988: 98 single-seater CF-188As and 40 two-seater CF-188Bs.
This CF-188 was manufactured by McDonnell Douglas Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri in July 1982. It was the first CF-188 delivered to Canada, and the first two-seater model designed for training.
As Canada’s first CF-188, the aircraft was part of a large ceremony at the factory on July 28, 1982. It made its first flight a few days later. The Canadian Forces officially accepted the aircraft on October 7. On October 25, Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau was on board one of the two CF-188s, including the Museum's aircraft, that flew over Ottawa. Soon after this, the aircraft was delivered to No. 410 “Cougar” Squadron, the operational training unit for the CF-188, based at Cold Lake, Alberta, where it served as a trainer.
When maintaining the aircraft in flying condition became prohibitively expensive, it was transferred to the Museum. On October 18, 2001, it was flown to Rockcliffe airport. Given the airport's short runway, the Canadian Forces installed a mobile arresting gear (similar to that used on aircraft carriers), to ensure a safe landing.
These barracks were built by the Canadian forces in the end of the 1950's. In these barracks the unmarried forces settled while the married soldiers got to live in a compound nearby outside the barracks.
On the terrain there were churches, a gym, radio antenna and the cinema.
In the 1970's the Canadians left and the barracks were used by the British forces. Uptil the mid 1990's when the last soldiers left and no others came to take their place...

Gatwick was a major European hub for the Canadian Armed Forces. Douglas Dakotas and Bristol Freighters ferried personnel from and to France and Germany while Hercs and Yukons like this were used across the Atlantic. Delivered to the RCAF in 1961, this one was sold to Zaire in 1974 and scrapped there in 1983.

Wearing some incognito face gear and a Helmet-Cam, this Canadian Forces CH-147F's Loadmaster strikes a pose during their lengthy hold while departing Fairford
At one point the pilot decided to lift the front gear off and sat there like a prancing horse for a while before dropping down again
Preceding them was their 'lift' home in the shape of Boeing CC-177 'Moose' 177703 - both departing for the short hop to Brize Norton whereupon 147304 would be prepared for the return flight home aboard her
Top job chaps

A CH-113 Labrador in Search and Rescue (SAR) colours. This airframe was in service from 1964 - 2004.
Over those forty years, the very sight of this SAR workhorse would be cause of both feelings of elation and relief, for thousands of men, women and children, who would see it coming over the horizon - to their rescue. Often hearing it long before they could see it. Airlifting them from remote communities, ships at sea (often pitching in the dark in horrible storms), plane crash sites in the remote wilderness and pretty much anywhere else you can imagine across Canada's diverse and remote topography.
As their motto says "So Others May Live."
