Fighting for “Hero Fund” and Fallen Soldiers
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TORONTO, ON, Mar. 3, 2010 - On Feb. 20 2010, over $1000 was donated to the Canadian Hero Fund at a kickboxing event in Peterborough, Ont.
The Canadian Hero Fund began in 2009, founded by a group of University of Toronto
students. The goal of the charity is to raise $2 million over the course of four years. The money raised will go towards scholarships for the children and spouses of fallen soldiers.
The Eastern Ontario Fight League and CanFight Promotions staged “Fury Fight for the
Troops” at the Trentwinds International Centre. It was Matt Blundell, a kickboxing
promoter with CanFight, who first approached the charity.
The idea to host an event in support of the troops and their families came from competitor
Devin Bulger. Bulger is the nephew of Cpl. Nicholas Bulger, a native of Buckhorn, Ont., who was killed in action in July of last year.
Scott Birkhof, who organized the event presented the Hero Fund with a donation of $500 from proceeds of ticket sales in the ring. Over $500 was also raised through t-shirt sales and cash donations at the event.
It doesn't matter how many years go by, each and every Remembrance Day ceremony (be it large or small, here or there) will bring tears. Tears of sadness for the losses and tears of joy for the freedom gained.

A pair of ex-RCAF Beech Expeditors on delivery from Saskatoon storage to new civilian operators. The military markings have been painted out and civil registration crudely applied with a spray can. However the RCAF s/n 2372 on the tail was missed. Exported to the US as N20R, it was cancelled in 1991

The KPRT consists of Canadian Forces members, a civilian police contingent led by the RCMP, Correctional Services Canada, representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency. The KPRT conducts coordinated interdepartmental operations to promote good governance, assists the Government of Afghanistan in extending its authority in the province of Kandahar, and facilitates the development of a stable, secure and self-sustaining environment for the people of Afghanistan.
Joint Task Force Afghanistan (JTF-Afg) is Canadas military contribution to Afghanistan. Canadian operations will focus on working with Afghan authorities to improve security, governance and economic development in the country.
The Canadian Forces (CF) contribution in Afghanistan comprises over 2,500 soldiers, most of whom serve with JTF-Afg at Kandahar Airfield and Camp Nathan Smith, Canadas Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), in Kandahar City. Additional personnel are assigned to various military headquarters, support bases, and civilian organizations.
