The first time I have seen them yellow!

Calla lilies are said to come from the ancient god Hera, the wife of Zeus. In the story, Zeus brought Hercules to nurse from his wife while she was sleeping. He wanted his son to have the strength of the gods. Hera awoke and pushed the baby away from her. Drops of milk flew across the sky creating the milky way and everywhere they landed on earth, calla lilies bloomed.

I did both a color and black and white version of this image. Down below in the comments you can see the black and white version. You can click on it to view it larger.

I lit this with one YN560-III in an 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox above and to the right of the flower. Fill light came from a small hand mirror at camera left. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. While the Lastolite soft box is relatively small for a softbox, because it's much larger than the subject and also within 4 inches of it, the light on the flower is very soft.

Other plants, flowers, fruit or thingys that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description for that set, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422

It is always the same, once you have an idea for the studio, you get in there, see something else, and something else again, wonderful how inspirational it can be.

We did the wedding of Michelle and Ben.

The theme was CALLA LILIES, the bouquets on the tables, her wedding flowers, the cake, all beautiful cool Callas...

We were given a vase to take home and photograph them under studio-conditions.

I like that dramatic light from a soft box.

THanx for viewing, M,(*_*)

Sometimes I just 'feeeeeeeeel' like this, a flower image in b&w...

I love the subtle tones, all the varied tones, that give the flower/petals/stems their texture, depth and form, their delectable shapes accentuated, extracted and emphasized without the colour. Don't you agree?

Thanx, M, (*_*)

Tonight's calla - a beautiful green exterior with white inside.

This is a really (really, really) edited photo of a red and yellow calla lily that I took in my kitchen one day. I was looking everywhere for the "perfect" image of a white calla lily for a project I was working on.

I found that:

a) White calla lilies are beautiful - one of my favorite flowers, beside white roses - but they don't show much detail in photos; and

b) What I really wanted was a calla *drawing* and I could not find one that really suited my purposes.

So, I made my own - I was quite happy with myself over the result!

The dramatic curves of calla lily pedals perfectly framing a tiny dew drop on a wet spring afternoon in Big Sur.

Jack the Flipper wishes you an inspiring Friday with this beautiful plant Portrait of a calla lily in color.

Today Callas stand for modernity and elegance. As a gift presented they are a symbol of beauty and appreciation.

Not just a’A’ Calla, no, a DOUBLE!!! Never saw this before, a mutation?

Will it fly? LOL

I love 'abstracting', letting you see pure shape, and here minimal colour.

More experiments with lights and shapes...

Zantedeschia, usually called Calla or arum lilies( when white), they are not a true lily.

It is named after Italian botanist Francesco Zantedeschi.

Thanx for your comment and visits, as always, much appreciated. M, (*_*)

I can't seem to resist these beautiful little calla blooms

We checked in on the Calla lilies at Garrapata Beach since the creek should have much more water following such a wet winter. Unfortunately, the valley was a scene of devastation; Most of the plants had been ripped right out of the ground by the force of the water. I was hard pressed to spot two clean looking lilies side by side that I could photograph.

Lens is the A120mm f/4 macro. Not much else to add here. Single frame, single exposure.

Thanks for looking.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR NICES COMMENTS & INVITES

Still messing about with the Callas.

Calla Lily -

Calla, Calla Lily

by C. Colston Burrell

The great, white, waxy flowers of calla, also called calla lily,

so often seen at florists are nearly weeds in their native South Africa.

They're actually perennials in Zones 8, 9, and 10, but since they are not tolerant of frost,

they are grown as annuals in other parts of the United States. Gardeners throughout the country

can enjoy their lush, green leaves and bright flowers in summer by planting the tuber each spring.

Calla, also called Calla Lily, bloom as white to green annual flowers, yellow to orange annual flowers, and pink to fuchsia annual flowers.

Description of calla lily: Glistening, white flowers grow to 2 feet above the arrowhead-shaped leaves that arise from the rhizome planted below ground. By summer's end, a large clump of leaves displays a more or less continuous succession of flowers.

Growing calla lily: For maximum enjoyment, start rhizomes indoors 8 weeks prior to warm weather. Plant the large tubers in a soil mix high in peat or other organic matter and grow at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep uniformly moist and fertilize weekly with a water-soluble fertilizer. Plant outside in a rich soil high in organic matter that retains moisture. Incorporate a slow-release fertilizer before planting. Grow in full sun for maximum growth. In the fall, lift before frost, drying off foliage and rhizomes. Store in a frost-free place until spring.

Propagating calla lily: Buy rhizomes at garden centers in the spring. Check to make sure they are firm and moist.

Uses for calla lily: Plant callas anywhere you want to achieve a tropical look. They also make dramatic container plants and superb cut flowers.

Calla lily related species: Z. rehmannii is the pink calla, although it shows much variation in spathe color from wine-red to nearly white. It is smaller, growing to 18 inches. Z. elliotiana is a species with white, spotted foliage, and a golden-yellow spathe. The California series of dwarf callas comes in a full range of colors.

Calla lily related varieties: Green Goddess is green with a white throat. White Giant reaches 6 feet and has white flowers and speckled foliage.

Scientific name of calla lily: Zantesdeschia aethiopica

sorry if I bore you with these calla lilies but i cannot resist them..be patient..there may be more!

Wikipedia (Edited): "Białowieża Forest is a forest on the border between Belarus and Poland. It is one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. The forest is home to 800 European bison, Europe's heaviest land animal. UNESCO . . . designated the Polish Biosphere Reserve Białowieża in 1976 and the Belarusian Biosphere Reserve Biełavieskaja pušča in 1993. . . .

Large-scale logging started in 2017. 190 000 m³ of wood (160 000 to 180 000 trees) was felled, the largest volume of logging since 1988. The Polish government has ignored pleas from UNESCO to stop logging the old-growth parts of the forest, as well as a court order of the European Court of Justice to halt the logging activities. The final verdict fell on 17 April 2018, ruling that EU law has been infringed."

These photographs were taken in 2009; I shall not be revisiting, given the situation. UNESCO is monitoring: "The World Heritage Committee, Having examined Document WHC/21/44.COM/7B.Add,

Recalling Decision 43 COM 7B.14, adopted at its 43rd session (Baku, 2019),

Notes with satisfaction that forest management activities in the property, including logging, have remained at a very low scale, and only limited to the active management zone, as recommended by the 2018 Reactive Monitoring mission; . . . " whc.unesco.org/en/decisions/7816 (accessed 2023.06.20)
