Just above this river, straight up in the valley you see here, is a bath house. The river has been concreted over to create a dam for the bath house.

We came down to Caliente to watch the autorack train we saw earlier at Bealiville, but this stack train was heading uphill. That meant that the two had to meet at the Bealville siding. Grabbed a few shots as the stack train went past (family stayed in the car below, didn't have time to get in a better spot), then headed over to Tunnel 2 for the meet.
It is nice knowing your way around out here. We used to wait at the loop for trains that seemed to never come. Now we go search for them and then follow them. A lot less waiting, which makes the family happier (although the twisty roads around here can also make them car sick).

My first attempt at weft-faced/warp rep weaving, inspired by the Oaxacan rug from my father. My first attempt was somewhat successful. I had my first broken warp thread - which was kind of a big deal and I got a little nervous - but it ended up working out in the end.
This yarn, Colinette Point 5 in the Sahara colorway, was a one skein swap a few years back. I thought the colors were perfect for Project Spectrum's fire element with the deep reds and oranges in the piece.
I am planning to lightly felt this piece and cut it into coasters and/or a potholder.... either way, it will be a functional woven piece.
A southbound consist snaking round the bends on the approach to Caliente.
Despite having two Union Pacific units in positions two and three, this is a BNSF train.

I've always found this building fascinating. It's basically tucked into the base of a hill, just around a curve, just north of Caliente. It looks like it may have been some sort of motel at some point many years ago. At various times over the years that I have been through the area, it appears to have been a private home at some times and abandoned at others.
Think of the hottest bath you've ever had ... it will still be much cooler than the 70C / 160F temperature at which these waters gush forth from the Rio Caliente, in Mexico's Jalisco province. Mexico has over 1,000 naturally-hot mineral springs and rivers (aguas termales), which produced treasured local balnearios (bathing places) whose location you must drag out of secretive locals.
Located in the shadow of extinct volcano Mount Tequila, the river is fatally hot for most creatures entering it. It's an awesome sight to see, hike beside or cross a bridge over these crystal clear, scalding waters !
