KABUL, Afghanistan (March 23, 2011) - An Afghan National Army female

For Hugin Users Group. This was an early experiment that didn't completely work. I wanted to capture the small craft and distant shore with extra detail so that there would be as much interest in that part of the picture as in the cruise ships. I wanted the eye to move out into the harbor and find all these interesting little details. To do that, I shot frames to the right at increasingly longer focal lengths and hoped that enblend could smoothly blend the differences in noise. Once you look for it, you see that it didn't really do this effectively. Noise changes rather abruptly at seams where the focal length changed. Note vertical bands of light and dark on the water are not stitching problems, but just reflections of the white ships on the dark water.
cwd1151 - Rembrandt Lighting (redux) ~ A repeat from Week 46. Here's Other Dave's original assignment description: Yo!
This was a really really hard assignment. I took over 50 shots & ended up with something that's still not great - but I'm pleased with the photo.

The week of 277 assignment, cwd2772 was Bubbles, welll... I wanted to be different ... maybe it will be ok that it is NOT soap... but glass.
The little bubbles of within a glass tube is called Thermoscope and was invented by Galileo Galilei back in the 1600's. This device consists of a sealed glass tube that is filled with water and several floating bubbles. The bubbles are glass spheres filled with a colored liquid mixture. Attached to each bubble is a little metal tag that indicates a temperature. Those tags are actually calibrated counterweights. This device is for showing changes in heat because as the temperature of the surrounding water changes, it either expands or contracts, thus changing its density. So at any given density, some of the bubbles will float while others will sink. The bubble that sinks the most indicates the approximate current temperature.

my 365 and cwd // assignment - the moon - this is the first time i've attempted something like this.
Oh yeah, baby. There is nothing like a smokin' hot date on a Friday night. Most of the guys I knew in college had a whole lot of bragging going on, it's true. But in reality, their sex life was very much like this picture.
Taken for CWD assignment: Sex. Blame this on the whole cereal discussion from last week. Obviously (I hope) nothing pornographic. But also realize this is wide open to interpretation, so if you're not comfortable with the topic, just be creative!
Week 135 Assignment 1 for Take A Class With Dave and Dave.
Rule of Thirds ~ I'm sort of amused that it look 135 weeks for this to come up as an official assignment.
I spent the day over at Kathy's parents house helping Bill cut down a tree in his front yard. It was half dead and as trees go, this one wasn't the most attractive due to all the dead limbs. He had trimmed it in the past, but it was a losing battle and he finally decided it was time for it to come down.
As we were bundling up the smaller limbs I noticed this caterpillar on one of the branches. I took the branch across the street to show Savanah and the kids who were at the neighbor's house swimming. They were all fascinated by him. After letting them oooh and aaaah about him I took him back across the street and took a bunch of shots of him before putting him in a bush so that he could get about his business of becoming a butterfly or moth or whatever it is he is going to turn into.
Anyone happen to know what exactly he will turn into?
Assignment 1. What I want for Christmas. I've heard lots of news about how this Christmas is being handled differently by many families because of all the financial pressure, and I'd like for us to handle it differently as well. Let's treat this more like the question from a beauty pagent, which I think means something a bit more philosophical. So: show us your Christmas wish.
The gentleman in the wheel chair is Joe. He was paralyzed from the waist down and suffered a double amputation. This is all a result of his being shot 16 times when he was 16 years old. Joe got involved with gangs in Chicago when he was 10 years old. Most of the men in his life--his uncles, brothers, friends and so on--were involved in gang banging. He was influenced by this life before he entered puberty and lost the use of his legs before he left puberty.
To see him today, from my impression of him, paints an entirely different tale. Joe is the personification of joy. Surely this helps him in his vocation, panhandling, but it isn't possibly inauthentic. A smile from ear to ear and a song of good will to all those who walk by. He said he found the lord 17 years ago and hasn't been without a smile since. He gives thanks for all he has to the lord above him and blesses those who pass him with a warm smile and a nice word.
I liked this picture because of the children. The children were attracted to Joe and turned around with glowing smiles as he spoke to them. Their parents, conversely, barely glanced at him, walking straight by, refusing to acknowledge the good cheer of the man in the wheelchair. I don't know how we become so jaded as we get older, quick to judge, decreasingly empathetic, but that mindset wasn't there when we were young. Maybe we experience disappointment too often. Maybe we grow acutely scared. I don't know what it is, but we lose touch with one another. We walk the crowded sidewalks, barely acknowledging the existence of those that pass by us. We lose something.
This brings me to my Christmas Wish(es): That we try harder to acknowledge one another. That we are less quick to judge and more willing to empathize. That we accept that we are all different, but yet uniquely human. We all seek happiness and human connection. And while we may have different life experiences than whoever may cross your path, we are all brothers and sisters in this world.
I have a huge drawer full of cereal packages - (did´nt make an interesting shot...) - we are three in the house and we all like to have different choices for our breakfast... - to give you an example there is Cheerios, Honey Nut, Kellog´s korn flakes, Special K, Bran flakes, Wheetos, regular oatmeal and Müsli... - writing it down makes it sound crazy...
but
never mix sex with cereal!!!
thinking of assignment 1. Cereal. I read an advertisement for a cereal restaurant the other day that said 66% of Americans surveyed said they enjoyed sex, but 94% said they loved cereal! How much do you love cereal? Tag with cwd421

Take a Class With Dave and Dave - Week 14 - Assignment 3
Square Foot. The entire content of your photo must be 12x12 inches (~30x30cm). What? I'm talking about the entire frame. So, first...your photo must be cropped square (non-square images will be removed from the pool). Second, if you enlarged the photo to 12x12, it would be a life-sized photo.
Possible contender? Comments? I can't decide between this one or this one , please tell me which you prefer!
Decided to submit this one for the assignment. Thank you to everyone for your advice, opinions and support! I really appreciate it!
cwd912 - Money Photograph money. Make it interesting.
Last minute idea, even faster execution. I've always had a fantasy of lighting a cigar with a hundred dollar bill. One of the reasons I keep going to the casinos in Biloxi.
This is what comes to mind when I think of noise. This has to be the loudest dehumidifier ever made. It shakes the house. My treatment of this photo is what I think of this machine.
Week 5 - Assignment 2. Album cover. OK. with this one we take a small step outside our normal limitations. Create a fully conceived design for an album. like any cd or lp cover, it must be: a square, have the name of the artist, and the name of the album. do a search on "bad album cover" and you'll find loads of examples of themes to avoid. Still, maybe you could create something so bad it became sublime... (cwd52)
I had originally started off going in a completely different direction with this, doing a cheesy love songs CD. I came across this car this afternoon, and shot about 40 frames while standing there. While I was shooting, this design appeared in my head, and I just HAD to do it.
