The Cuban bullfinch is a songbird species of the monotypic genus Melopyrrha. Sometimes classified in the bunting and American sparrow family, more recent studies have shown it to be part of the tanager family.

It is only found here in the Cayman Islands and in Cuba.

We observed this Cuban Nightjar, Antrostomus cubanensis, on its day roost in dense brush. It is a Cuban endemic species that is fairly common but difficult to observe because of its preference for fairly dense forests along with its ability to blend in so well with the bark and leaves where it perches.

The Cuban trogon or tocororo (Priotelus temnurus) is a species of bird in the family Trogonidae. It is endemic to Cuba, where it is also the national bird.

(First of two) This Cuban Black Hawk, Buteogallus gundlachii, was spotted flying near the ocean. This Cuban endemic is fairly common in swamps and along the coast.

I got lucky while on a Cuban holiday. Some new friends we made at the resort told me about a woodpecker nest just outside my room. The nest was quite low and had some good light, so over the course of the week, I visited it regularly and probably took about 2000 pictures. I wanted to get good flight shots so the camera was set to 20 frames per second. This is my first one that I am happy with but I suspect I will end up posting about 10 to 15 shots of this species. Stay tuned!

Friendly game of dominos in Havana Centro

.

In 2013, UNESCO recognized the cultural significance of Cuban dominoes by inscribing it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This acknowledgment highlighted the game's role in fostering social bonds, preserving traditions, and promoting a sense of identity and continuity among the Cuban people.

Today, dominoes remain an integral part of Cuban life, with the distinct sound of shuffling tiles and lively banter echoing through the streets. It serves as a reminder of the resilience, camaraderie, and cultural pride that define the Cuban spirit.

This is the entrance of a very popular restaurant....not in Cuba, no. In Kalkbay, South Africa. I posted a photo of the interior a while ago.

I can recommend the place, it's called "Cape to Cuba".

Some great seafood dishes.....among other things....and live music.

Here's the photo of the interior and decor:

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend, everyone.

HFF!

I didn't really know what to title this image.................

When my wife and I were in eastern Cuba last month I came across this scene. Of course it was the three-wheel motorcycle that caught my attention. It had a neat sound, it was running well, and was amazingly 'restored' for everyday use.

The fellow in the driver's seat is actually a local policeman. He was shy about having his photo taken, but I was welcome to take some shots.

Thank you for looking in, etc.:)

The Cuban Tody is an endemic bird to the island of Cuba. This small and very multi-coloured bird is seen throughout a very large portion of Cuba. The species is characterized by small size with a length of 1.1 in (28 mm) and weighing 5.9 g (0.21 oz).

Cuba tries to turn Florida into an ash tray! Only Dear Leader can save us! Cuba better be careful or he'll turn it into the 51st state, right Marco?

Ariel Gato Marinda is an artist in Cuba who paints on paper he manufacturers himself from discarded office paper. He makes his own dyes from local natural materials. I purchased a small silk screen he made of a Cuban Trogon, Cuban's national bird, and made a portrait of him in his modest but highly effective and productive studio. I did see a trogon in the wild, and his portrait is very representative of the bird. Las Terrazas, Cuba, March 2019
