"...Essentially, the M3 CSL took the standard E46 M3 Coupé and put it on a diet. The roof was replaced with a carbon fibre reinforced plastic panel, weighing 13 lbs. less than its steel counterpart. This material was used throughout the car and no stone was left unturned in making the car as light as possible, including fitting thinner rear-window glass. BMW claims that the M3 CSL tips the scales at 3,054 lbs., some 300 lbs. lighter than the standard M3. Furthermore, the car is powered by a modified version of the S54 inline six-cylinder engine, rated at 360 bhp and mated to BMW’s SMG II sequential manual transmission. A total of 1,383 M3 CSLs were built, excluding prototypes, all of which were built to European specification between June and December of 2003. Of these, 841 examples were built to left-hand-drive specifications..."

BMW 3.0 CSL, such a cool classic!

The conductor gives me a toot as he takes the curve that will take him off NYC tracks and onto the former Pennsy. No caboose was needed today which let me get a rare shot of a SW1001 without the SW1500 in the way. The usual SW1500 was at the rear pushing about 35 cars away.

Deliciously crude replica of the mighty 1970's BMW 3.5 CSL by Summer.

A pair of Chicago Short Line units lead a string of fresh NW Indiana-produced steel coils as the train passes the former Whiting/Hammond Amtrak "Amshack" that served as a stop for commuter service between Valparaiso and Chicago. I photographed this car in the paddock at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1999. There's no information about it in the programme of the event, but it's a 1977 BMW 3.0 CSL of the Belgian Luigi Racing Team, one of which finished in eighth place in the 1977 Le Mans 24 Hour Race, winning the IMSA class. The BMW 3.0 CSL was introduced in 1972 as a homologation version of the 3.0 CS, the 2,986cc of the straight-6 engine having been increased by 1977 to 3,153cc.

Just look at that ugly grimacing face of this cheap Summer toy. Its definitely got a face only a mother could love but somewhere underneath all that cheap plastic and thin metal is a BMW 3.2 CSL! Another recent kind charity shop gift from Mikaela who obviously has an eye for saving needy diecast waives and strays! ;-)
