Almost there.

The Culligan HD-950 filter housing is installed on the opposite wall so that it can be anchored to a wall stud, you should see the huge bolts they sent with the mouting bracket for this thing. I'll run the CPVC pipe over to that wall and then over to the filter housing. This filter housing will hold the GAC, Granular Activated Charcoal, filter to remove the chlorine from the water before entering the water softener, seen just below (the softener controller is the black box next to the water heater).

When I got the Haier washer and dryer set I thought it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I was partly right, the bread just wasn't sliced. I found the 6 month old set off of Craigslist, and they both worked wonderfully. The catch: The washer has no wheels and is bulky and heavy and the dryer is meant to be a wall mount unit. I had this unused corner next to the fridge so I decided to make the washer a permanent install and it's turned out quite nice. This is a shot of the plumbing behind the washer.

Oops! No matter how good someone is, they are not perfect. As you can see, the grout is not complete (on the bottom) and does not cover the escutcheon.

Okay, time to replace the south wall stud. Two 2X4's were screwed together at 90 degrees in order to strengthen the wider part (shown here). The narrow part replaces the termite damaged stud. The wide part will be used to support the joint where the tile backer board interfaces with the moisture resistant sheet rock. I don't use nails anywhere. Screws are just so much more secure.

This area basically sound. Next the south (on left) wall will be exposed. That area was fairly ugly... as we will see. This is a better illustration of how the concrete protrudes out from the plane of the wall studs. With the cultured marble, the sheet rock was attached to the studs, and rested upon the top of the protruding concrete. I'll explain more on another image.

Pure Tech 250 inline pellet Chlorinator installed using a modified Culligan UB-1bracket, originally designed for use with the HF-360 filter housing. I cut the bracket in half and used the two sides to support the weight of the chlorinator on the wall.

Had to cut around the drain with a hand-held grinder. I really wanted to do this part of the tile. I've never done ceramic tile installation before. However, the tile guy called and said he was between jobs and would do it dirt cheap. So the owner couldn't resist.

This is the original cultured marble shower. See the mold in the upper southwest corner? It was sprayed with a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water. It disappeared.

Here he is in the flesh... Bathroom Boy! We'll call him Bart.

sled kit parts-

The kit contains three items; a sled, a pair of cpvc poles, and a length of rope to string through the poles and under the front of the sled. Then attach the ends of the rope to whatever waist belt, fanny pack, or backpack you will be using. The sled is about 42" long, with holes in the front for the rope to pass through. Each side of the sled has two small holes drilled to hook two bungee cords to, if you bring them.

If you look closely you'll notice a small hole near the base of this wet vent. It was caused by a finish nail, holding the old base board. Whoever built this house did not install a protective metal plate to prevent this very thing.

The tile is so much higher than the concrete sub floor, that it is doubtful that a new flange ring can be installed the way it is... we'll see.

If you look high in the northeast corner of the skylight, you will see what appears to be mold. The original skylight was only single-pane plastic... and flat at that. So each winter, when anyone showered, the condensation would drip on any shaver.

I can't believe the curb between the bathroom floor (tile removed) and the shower pan was made of wood! It had cultured marble glued to that wood. Not very wise construction. This would help lead to huge repairs. The moisture stored here, actually attracted roots from outside plants (look closely), and termites.

I used a 5 in 1 tool as a chisel. The sharp edge easily cut the joint in a straight line. I used a hammer to effect the shear.

Building a new solar collector using 1/2" CPVC

In with the good wood. All of the remaining "old" wood was tested for strength. Even though some of the wood doesn't look perfect. I could NOT press a screwdriver into it. Wherever there was termite or water damage, the tool went in easily. Even where the wood looked good.

Completed installation of the pellet chlorinator and filter housings. Start with sediment filter on right, then to chlorinator, then to granular activated carbon filter on left and then to the softener.

Here the bolts (3 and 9 O'clock) are holding the ring halves in place.

This stud was moved a little in order to line it up with the joint interface between backer board and moisture resistant sheet rock. It had to be notched out to make room for the copper water supply to the thunderbox.

Completed installation of the pellet chlorinator and filter housings. Start with sediment filter on right, then to chlorinator, then to granular activated carbon filter on left and then to the softener.

Therefore, I had to mix a little and make a patch. Here you can see the nearly invisible dry grout vs. the darker brown wet grout.

It was, though, so tight that I had to use this wood glue clamp to hold it in place while tightening the bolts.

The north and west walls exposed.

The sheet rock is 1/2 inch, but we could only find this backer board in 1/4 inch. So the tile guy added some furring to the studs to bring it to the right thickness.

October 5, 2015 - New Tees and flushing valves connection. The two brass gate valves will provide a convenient access point to connect an acid wash system to remove the mineral buildup that occurs on the Cupro Nickel heat exchanger over time. You can see some indications of a black deposit on the inside of the clear braided hoses. When I removed the one section this past summer to replace with the CPVC piping I did an acid soak on the clear 1" braided hose. I first put in CLR for about an hour which seemed to remove about 80% of the black coating. I then soaked it with Muriatic acid that removed the remainder completely.

Shower and sheet rock (rough) is complete. Now it's time to pull the thunderbox and set the floor tile.

More roots and rotten wood after removing the curb. Try to note that the shower pan (floor) basically is surrounded by a dry "moat." That will cause huge repairs as well. Because the owner decided to rebuild with porcelain tile, rather than the original cultured marble. The construction was not adequate for the tile. Oh well, I get ahead of myself.

I was trying to take a self-portrait for FGR of myself standing in front of the back wall of our house which is covered in pealing lead paint (FGR was Wall Wednesday). The photos of the wall didn't come out very well. This was my test shot and was one of the few that had a proper focus (the 50mm isn't easy in remote control mode!)

Today went really fast. This afternoon I rode with Eric to Williamsport and did some shopping at Target and Petco while Eric was in training. Now he knows all about Spears Flameguard CPVC fire prevention products and I bought Brix cat grass and some shampoo! So, pretty much everyone is happy!

Heres everything we removed today, while that doesn't look like a lot the trash bag it all went into must have weighed 50 pounds.

After the floor dried, a bucket of water was dumped in the pan to verify proper drainage.

The water valves for the washer as installed behind the machine. These are very convenient and the fact that the washer is stationary is great. The pipes go to the basement and join to the existing washer plumbing there. Since I have a roommate in the basement now, I figured this would be a better setup. I didn't have a full-size set anyway.

Strobist: CPVC pipes and shower curtain light panel at 30 cm to the left of subjects, lit with SB-28 at 1/16 power about 120 cm behind the panel. Ebay triggers.

Shot taken by my wife.

Couldn't clean the grout. Tried a grout saw, but the thinnest blade could not get between the tile. So, a 5 in 1 tool was employed with a hammer.

Okay, took the toilet on a short walk.

Some tile from an old job was cut up and used for the new curb. Remember the original was wood... (see image 8) It will be covered later with tile from the shower job.
