An old photograph of Birmingham Corporation Tramways (BCT) '301' class tram No. 341 at Selly Oak Depot.

BCT tram No. 341 was built as a double deck balcony car seating 24/28 in 1911 by the United Electric Car Co. (UEC) and running on a UEC 4 wheel 'flexible axle' truck. In 1919 it was equipped to be used when required as a snow plough, it's lower saloon was fitted with upholstered tilting seats in 1931/2 changing the seating to 21/28, and in 1942/3 it was given a war time grey livery.

In Mar 1945 it went to the Kyotts Lake Road Works where it was cut down to single deck, dressed up in electric lights, and used as an *illuminated 'Victory' car. It was converted further at Kyotts Lake Rd. when in in Jan 1948 it was made into a works 'supply' car based in the Selly Oak Depot.

No. 341 was withdrawn from service Jul 1952 and sold to W. T. Bird & Sons who broke her up for scrap at Witton Depot. 😭

The parts of the Birmingham tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jul 1953.

Any photograph, ephemera, etc I post on Flickr is in my possession, nothing is copied from another location. The original photographer may have taken copies from their original negative and passed them out (sold them?) so there may be other copies out there of your (and my) 'original' transport photo, although occasionally there may be 'holiday snaps' type photos where there are not any other photos exactly the same in existence.

It was designed by Alfred C Gardner, Docks Engineer to the LNER, and built by Arrol & Co of Glasgow. The little Morrison milk float of Northern Dairies was an added bonus!

Monday, 22 May 2023: Spring has finally sprung on the North end as Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) Fairbanks Local heads Railroad South back to Fairbanks Yard. Here they are passing under two overpasses that carry the Richardson Highway up and over the railroad at just shy of MP G21.0. 2004 and 2005 power this train of 17 empty coal cars that originated from Eielson Air Force Base’s Central Heat and Power Plant.

The Eielson Branch starts at the ARRC’s Fairbanks Yard before running through Fairbanks and entering the US. Army’s Fort Wainwright. After winding through Fort Wainwright the Eielson Branch’s first power switch is at MP G6.0 where the Airport Branch diverges and serves a handful of customers. As for the Eielson Branch it will continue Southeast through Badger and the City of North Pole where the Marathons North Pole Terminal is located. After passing through North Pole it will climb up and over the Chena Flood Plains before passing through Moose Creek and entering Eielson Air Force Base. Eielson is located just past MP G24 and is where the United States Military Railroad takes control over of the remaining trackage onto base.

2004 and 2005 are both GP38–2’s of Penn Central heritage being built in 1969 as numbers 7752 and 7754. Seven short years later, they were absorbed in the Conrail takeover where they served for another short ten years. In 1986 they were bought by the ARRC and shipped up to the last frontier where they have remained ever since. Still in their as delivered “Alaska Bold” livery 2004 is showing her age. 2005 however still looks rather clean with its 75 year anniversary decal still showing as the Railroad marks it’s 100th year.

Leeds experimented briefly with two modern single-deck trams constructed by Charles Roe of Leeds - but the writing was already on the wall for the Leeds tramway system. The blue livery illustrated (the lighter of two different shades used at different times) replaced the traditional dark red and was, itself, replaced by green when buses took over.

In reality, this is a mirror image of a 1971 single-ended HTM tram preserved at the Hague Transport Museum in the Netherlands. Built under licence by La Brugeoise in Belgium, it is a late development of the classic American 'Presidents Conference Car' (PCC) without the fussy window arrangement of the earlier design (Updated 03-Nov-12).

Seen here at the Cutenhoe Road terminus circa 1968 is 161 ANM, a Leyland Titan / East Lancs new to Luton Corporation in July 1960. The vehicle passed to United Counties on the takeover of the Luton undertaking in January 1970, but was not long lived.

Sunderland Corporation Tramways No.16 was built by Dick, Kerr & Co., Preston, in 1900.

When the Sunderland tram system closed in 1954, a number of tram bodies escaped the scrapyard, instead finding a new use as football changing-room.

After a spell on a football field, the lower saloon of No.16 was moved to Westwood Farm, Low Warden, near Hexham, Northumberland, where it spent the next 30-odd years as a tool-shed and apple store. The body was rescued by Beamish in 1989 and returned to service in 2003.

Following a further major overhaul it has recently returned to service and makes a fine sight in the winter sun. It is seen travelling between the town and Pockerley on 4th January 2015.

While the bus shows service 45 to Allerton Little Horton Lane - in reality it should show City Centre..

One of the reasons for visiting Bradford was to go to the suburb (town) of Allerton. Little did we think that we could obtain a photo of a magnificent AEC Regent V actually displaying Allerton on its blind. Evidently we must have asked the driver to wind the blind up to show the name Allerton.

Allerton being the surname of one of our fellow travelling companions.

The Corporation invests in almost everything. Naturally, it needs something to move its large investments of everything. Thus, the Capital Freighters were put into use.

A recent visitor to us at Reliance Bus Works was this ex Liverpool Corporation AEC Regent V. We don't get too many AEC 'deckers come our way (except Routemasters) so it was especially pleasing to get this one to work on for a few days. VKB 900 has bodywork by Metro Cammell to their 'Orion' design but has one or two bespoke Liverpool 'mods'. Obviously the city didn't approve of AEC's own front grille pattern so designed their own replacement. The built up front N/S mudguard which contains the side light was also a distinguishing feature I gather. The bus was originally powered by AEC's 9.6 litre engine, the predecessor of the 590, but as the former are getting difficult to obtain, the 9.6's larger stablemate, the 11.3 now inhabits the engine bay.

The bus is seen here on it's return journey from our compound for a quick checking over (fitting of front 'nut rings' etc) prior to collection by it's owners last Saturday.

El cotxe 602 de Blackpool Corporation va entrar en servei el juliol de 1934. Construït per English Electric va ser el primer dels vehicles de serie en entrar en servei, després del prototip 600. L'any 1968 va ser renumerat 602.

A nice selection of buses in December 1975. Is that bus behind one of the AEC Reliance demonstrators that operated for London Transport as the RW class?

Bolton Corporation amassed a large fleet of Leyland Atlanteans mostly with East Lancs bodywork like two of them here. When it was integrated into the Greater Manchester PTE more were added including the Park Royal bodied example 7109.

Crossley FNM 110 of Luton Corporation is seen here at Mayne Avenue on the Hockwell Ring Estate on what is believed to be the occasion of an Omnibus Society trip to the operator in the early 1950's. The Hockwell Ring shops can be seen in the background, complete but not fitted out while prefabs can be seen to the left. The estate was initially largely made up of these prefab units, gradually being replaced by brick houses through the 1950's and early 1960's. The estate was complete with the construction of two high rise tower blocks - Ackworth Court and Mosdale Court in the mid-60's.
