The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), known colloquially as the Hare Krishna movement, is a Gaudiya Vaishnava religious organization.[1] It was founded in 1966 in New York City by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.[2] Its core beliefs are based on traditional Hindu scriptures such as the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and the Bhagavad-gītā,[3] both of which, according to the traditional Hindu view, date back more than 5,000 years. The distinctive appearance of the movement and its culture come from the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, which has had adherents in India since the late 15th century and Western converts since the early 1930s.[4]

ISKCON was formed to spread the practice of bhakti yoga, in which aspirant devotees (bhaktas) dedicate their thoughts and actions towards pleasing the Supreme Lord, Krishna.[5][6] ISKCON today is a worldwide confederation of more than 400 centers, including 60 farm communities, some aiming for self-sufficiency, 50 schools and 90 restaurants.[7] In recent decades the movement's most rapid expansions in terms of numbers of membership have been within Eastern Europe (especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union) and India.[

ISKCON devotees follow a disciplic line of Gaudiya Bhagavata Vaishnavas and are the largest branch of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.[9] Vaishnavism means 'worship of Vishnu', and Gauḍa refers to the area where this particular branch of Vaishnavism originated, in the Gauda region of West Bengal. Gaudiya Vaishnavism has had a following in India, especially West Bengal and Orissa, for the past five hundred years. A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada disseminated Gaudiya Vaishnava Theology in the Western world through extensive writings and translations,[10] including the Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana), Chaitanya Charitamrita and other scriptures. These works are now available in more than seventy languages and serve as the canon of ISKCON. Many are available online from a number of websites.[11][12]

Early western conversions to monotheistic Krishna Vaisnavism or the Bhagavata Vaishnava line which forms the basis of the ISKCON philosophy were recorded by the Greeks and are reflected in the archaeological record.[13][14]

Krishna is described as the source of all the avatars.[15] Thus ISKCON devotees worship Krishna as the highest form of God, svayam bhagavan, and often refer to Him as "the Supreme Personality of Godhead" in writing, which was a phrase coined by Prabhupada in his books on the subject. To devotees, Radha represents Krishna's divine female counterpart, the original spiritual potency, and the embodiment of divine love. The individual soul is an eternal personal identity which does not ultimately merge into any formless light or void as suggested by the monistic (Advaita) schools of Hinduism. Prabhupada most frequently offers Sanatana-dharma and Varnashrama dharma as more accurate names for the religious system which accepts Vedic authority.[16] It is a monotheistic tradition which has its roots in the theistic Vedanta traditions.[17]

[edit]Hare Krishna mantra

Main article: Hare Krishna (mantra)

The popular nickname of "Hare Krishnas" for devotees of this movement comes from the mantra that devotees sing aloud (kirtan) or chant quietly (japa) on tulsi mala. This mantra, known also as the Maha Mantra, contains the names of God Krishna and Rama.

The Maha Mantra:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama

Rama Rama Hare Hare

[edit]Seven purposes of ISKCON

Public street festivals are a significant part of ISKCONs outreach programmes. Seen here is a Ratha Yatra festival in central London.

When Srila Prabhupada first incorporated ISKCON in 1966, he gave it seven purposes:[18]

To systematically propagate spiritual knowledge to society at large and to educate all people in the techniques of spiritual life in order to check the imbalance of values in life and to achieve real unity and peace in the world.

To propagate a consciousness of Krishna, as it is revealed in the Bhagavad-gita and the Srimad-Bhagavatam.

To bring the members of the Society together with each other and nearer to Krishna, the prime entity, thus to develop the idea within the members, and humanity at large, that each soul is part and parcel of the quality of Godhead (Krishna).

To teach and encourage the sankirtana movement, congregational chanting of the holy names of God as revealed in the teachings of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

To erect for the members, and for society at large, a holy place of transcendental pastimes, dedicated to the personality of Krishna.

To bring the members closer together for the purpose of teaching a simpler and more natural way of life.

With a view towards achieving the aforementioned purposes, to publish and distribute periodicals, magazines, books and other writings.

[edit]Four regulative principles

Srila Prabhupada prescribed four regulative principles, in relation to the four legs of dharma,[19] as the basis of the spiritual life:

No eating of meat (including fish) or eggs (lacto-vegetarianism)

No illicit sex

No gambling

No intoxication (including alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and other recreational drugs).

The four legs of Dharma are:[19]

Daya: Mercy

Tapas: Self-Control or Austerity

Satyam: Truthfulness

Śaucam: Cleanliness of body and mind

[edit]Preaching activities

ISKCON is known for their energetic active preaching. Members try to spread Krishna consciousness, primarily by singing the Hare Krishna mantra in public places and by selling books written by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.[20] Both of these activities are known within the movement as Sankirtan. A study conducted by E. Burke Rochford Jr. at the University of California found that there are four types of contact between those in ISKCON and prospective members. Those include: individually motivated contact, contact made with members in public arenas, contact made through personal connections, and contact with sympathizers of the movement who strongly sway people to join.[21] According to the doctrine of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, one does not need to be born in a Hindu family to take up the practice of Vaishnavism. There are ISKCON communities around the world with schools, restaurants and farms. In general, funds collected by ISKCON are treated as communal property and used to support the community as a whole and to promote the preaching mission.[22] Many temples also have programs (like Food for Life) to provide meals for the needy. Also, ISKCON has recently brought the academic study of Krishna into western academia as Krishnology.

[edit]Bhaktivedanta Institute

The Bhaktivedanta Institute (BI) is the scientific research branch of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Founded in 1976 by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, it advances the study of the nature and origin of life, utilizing Vedic insights into consciousness, the self, and the origin of the universe. BI motto in Sanskrit language: "Athato brahma jijnasa" "One should inquire into the Supreme." BI has established the world's first graduate degree program (M.S./Ph.D) in consciousness studies at Mumbai in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, one of India's top technical schools. Subjects include Life Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics and Philosophy of Science. Currently Ravi Gomatam is the Director of Bhaktivedanta Institute.

[edit]Food for Life

Main article: Hare Krishna Food for Life

ISKCON has inspired, and sometimes sponsored, a project called Food for Life. The goal of the project is to "liberally distribute pure vegetarian meals (prasadam) throughout the world", as inspired by Prabhupada's instruction, given to his disciples in 1974, "No one within ten miles of a temple should go hungry . . . I want you to immediately begin serving food".[23] The international headquarters known as Food for Life Global site, established by Paul Rodney Turner (ref) and Mukunda Goswami,[24] coordinates the project. Food for Life is currently active in over sixty countries and serves up to 2 million free meals every day.[24] Its welfare achievements have been noted by The New York Times and other media worldwide.[25][26][27][28]

[edit]Management structure

Satsvarupa dasa Gosvami (left) one of the original members of the Commission, in 1970 known under alias Sriman Satsvarupa Das Adhikary, with his disciple Yadunandana Swami (right), principal of Bhaktivedanta College

Srila Prabhupada spent much of the last decade of his life setting up the institution of ISKCON. As a charismatic leader, Srila Prabhupada's personality and management had been responsible for much of the growth of ISKCON and the reach of his mission.[29][30]

The Governing Body Commission (or GBC) was created by Prabhupada in 1970.[31] In a document Direction of Management written on 28 July 1970 Prabhupada appointed the following members to the commission, all of them non sannyasi:[29]

Sriman Rupanuga Das Adhikary

Sriman Bhagavan Das Adhikary

Sriman Syamsundar Das Adhikary

Sriman Satsvarupa Das Adhikary

Sriman Karandhar Das Adhikary

Sriman Hansadutta Das Adhikary

Sriman Tamala Krsna Das Adhikary

Sriman Sudama Das Adhikary

Sriman Bali Mardan Das Brahmacary

Sriman Jagadisa Das Adhikary

Sriman Hayagriva Das Adhikary

Sriman Kṛṣṇadas Adhikary

The letter outlined the following purposes of the commission: 1) improving the standard of temple management, 2) the spread of Krishna consciousness, 3) the distribution of books and literature, 4) the opening of new centers, 5) the education of the devotees. GBC has since grown in size to include 48 senior members from the movement who make decisions based on consensus of opinion rather than any one person having ultimate authority.[29][32] It has continued to manage affairs since Prabhupada's passing in 1977 although it is currently a self-elected organization and does not follow the provision where Srila Prabhupada instructs that members be elected by temple presidents.

[edit]Influential leaders since 1977

See also: Principle disciples of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami.

Before his death, Prabhupada "deputed"[33] or appointed the following eleven of his disciples to serve as gurus[34][35] or to continue to direct the organization:[36] Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami,[37][38] Jayapataka Swami,[39] Hridayananda Dasa Goswami, Tamal Krishna Goswami,[40] Bhavananda Goswami, Hansadutta Swami, Ramesvara Swami, Harikesa Swami, Bhagavan Dasa, Kirtanananda Swami, and Jayatirtha Dasa. These eleven "Western Gurus were selected as spiritual heads" of the ISKCON after 1977, however "many problems followed from their appointment and the movement had since veered away from investing absolute authority in a few, fallible, human teachers",[41] however of these eleven, the first three have remained prominent leaders within the movement, as was Tamal Krishna Goswami until his death in a car accident in March 2002. Bhavananda no longer holds the post of an initiating guru. Ramesvara, Bhagavan and Harikesa resigned as spiritual leaders in 1985, 1987 and 1999 respectively and the remaining three were all expelled from the movement by the Governing Body Commission during the 1980s.[42][not in citation given] Of Prabhupada's disciples, who number 4,734 in total,[43] approximately 70 are now acting as diksha gurus within ISKCON. As of April 2011, ISKCON had a total of 100 sannyasis, most of whom were acting as gurus (see List of International Society for Krishna Consciousness sannyasis).

September 1, 2005

Collage of sentences from Thomas Mann's Death in Venice.

It was a late summer afternoon in 2005 when my anxious shrinking world seemed to be beset by menacing clouds blowing from all directions. I feel overwrought from months of frustration built up through this nerve taxing work that will not cease to exact my uttermost sustained concentration. Lately I have been feeling hopeless against the onward sweep of the unproductive thoughts within me. I seek but find no relaxation in all the pleasurable pursuits of the past. I take walks in the hope the air and exercise will send me back refreshed to a good day's work.

September has begun and after the dramatic exit of the month of August with its unprecedented devastation of hail, heavy rains and violent wind storms, a mocking giddy sun shone. Ottawa was full of vehicles and pedestrians. Back home in La Peche, the lake was solitary and still. Trees stirred with the rising breeze. I was brought back to reality with the sound of traffic that blends into the wind in the trees and the hum of the old refrigerator that never stops running. I thought of my work and the place where weeks ago I was forced to lay it down since it would not yield. I had meant to bring the work to a certain point before September. The thought of a leisurely ramble east to the Maritimes or west to my granddaughters seemed too fanciful, too expensive, too luxurious to be seriously entertained. This yearning for a distant place, this craving for freedom, release, forgetfulness - they are, I admit an impulse toward flight, from the spot which is the daily theatre of a painstaking, passionate [] struggle. The research, reading and writing I love has almost come to take on a form of a tyrannical avenger. Again and again I try to untie the knot - which physically grasps my neck creating a sensation of a bulky growth whose finger-like tentacles grasp the back of my neck. Again and again I try to break the knot only to retire at last with a shiver of repugnance. What saps my energy is not that I think I am doing bad work. Since my youth I have known the ectasy of conquering the feelings of easy contentment and half-perfections to discipline myself to [fastidious, scrupulous details]. To me it seems my work has ceased to be marked by that fiery passion. I dread the solitude I used to crave shut up here in my heavy discontent. What I need is a break to make this period in my life more tolerable and productive. So ran my thoughts, while the lakeside gusts of wind sang through the heavy branches of trees in all directions around me. Some other physical or psychical influence came to play as I felt the most comforting consciousness of a widening of inward barriers - a kind of vaulting restfulness, a childlike thirst for the first home, the first grove of poplars that sang that familiar melody. I sat there rooted to the spot, my eyes on the birch tree and my pencil frozen in my hand as I explored these feelings, their bearing and scope in my new composition book, labeled fall 2005.

What pleases the [public are lively and vivid plots, actions and descriptions.] But I seem to need a problem. I am obsessed by the presence of the absence. I have taken false steps, blundered, exposed myself, offended against tact and sensitivity. But I have attained to higher goals. My whole life has been one conscious effort to learn, to be useful, to make a small part of the space around me more beautiful. My active mind has been blunted against the sharp and bitter irritant of knowledge. I have called genius itself in question, have become cynical about the nature of art and the artist's life. My self-conscious constancy of purpose now seems shallow and unaware. I am turning my back on the realm of material knowledge in a right about-face. For this kind of knowledge - which calls itself science or art - has lamed my will, my power of action, has paralyzed my feelings and my passions, has deprived all of these of their convictions and their utility. I reject all heroes except those born of weakness. I admire those who labour at the edge of exhaustion, those who continue trying although over-burdened with challenges and faced with a scarcity of resources. I admire those who are worn out but still hold themselves upright.

Note: By the time Gustav von Aschenbach died on a beach in Venice with tinted hair and his face painted in a grotesque effort to hide the ravages of fifty years plus on the body of a highly-disciplined, severe and celebrated author. there was little to admire or even like in this, the main character in Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring. ~ Oscar Wilde

En cet instant, l'autour, qui porte le miroir

and who knows how it might have fared with you in that case?

Stream of consciousness is a narrative device used in literature "to depict the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind. Another phrase for it is 'interior monologue'." The term "Stream of Consciousness" was coined by philosopher and psychologist William James in The Principles of Psychology (1890):

consciousness, then, does not appear to itself as chopped up in bits ... it is nothing joined; it flows. A 'river' or a 'stream' are the metaphors by which it is most naturally described. In talking of it hereafter, let's call it the stream of thought, consciousness, or subjective life.

In literary criticism, stream of consciousness is a narrative mode that seeks to portray an individual's point of view by giving the written equivalent of the character's thought processes, either in a loose interior monologue (see below), or in connection to his or her actions. Stream-of-consciousness writing is usually regarded as a special form of interior monologue and is characterized by associative leaps in thought and lack of punctuation. Stream of consciousness and interior monologue are distinguished from dramatic monologue and soliloquy, where the speaker is addressing an audience or a third person, which are chiefly used in poetry or drama. In stream of consciousness the speaker's thought processes are more often depicted as overheard in the mind (or addressed to oneself); it is primarily a fictional device.

Cover of James Joyce's Ulysses (first edition, 1922), considered a prime example of stream of consciousness writing styles.

In the following example of stream of consciousness from James Joyce's Ulysses, Molly seeks sleep:

a quarter after what an unearthly hour I suppose theyre just getting up in China now combing out their pigtails for the day well soon have the nuns ringing the angelus theyve nobody coming in to spoil their sleep except an odd priest or two for his night office or the alarmlock next door at cockshout clattering the brain out of itself let me see if I can doze off 1 2 3 4 5 what kind of flowers are those they invented like the stars the wallpaper in Lombard street was much nicer the apron he gave me was like that something only I only wore it twice better lower this lamp and try again so that I can get up early.

While many sources use the terms stream of consciousness and interior monologue as synonyms, the Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms suggests, that "they can also be distinguished psychologically and literarily. In a psychological sense, stream of consciousness is the subject‐matter, while interior monologue is the technique for presenting it". And for literature ... "while an interior monologue always presents a character's thoughts ‘directly’, without the apparent intervention of a summarizing and selecting narrator, it does not necessarily mingle them with impressions and perceptions, nor does it necessarily violate the norms of grammar, or logic- but the stream‐of‐consciousness technique also does one or both of these things."Similarly the Encyclopædia Britannica Online, while agreeing that these terms are "often used interchangeably," suggests, that "while an interior monologue may mirror all the half thoughts, impressions, and associations that impinge upon the character’s consciousness, it may also be restricted to an organized presentation of that character’s rational thoughts".

According to Tantra, being-consciousness-bliss or Satchidananda has the power of both self-evolution and self-involution. Prakriti or 'reality' evolves into a multiplicity of creatures and things, yet at the same time always remains pure consciousness, being and bliss. In this process of evolution, Maya conceals Reality and separates it into opposites, such as conscious and unconscious, pleasant and unpleasant, and so forth. If not realised as illusion, these determining conditions bind, limit and fetter (pashu) the individual (jiva).

In this relative dimension, Shiva and Shakti are perceived as separate. However, in Tantra, even in the state of evolution Reality remains pure consciousness, being and bliss, though Tantra does not deny either the act or fact of this evolution. In fact, Tantra affirms that both the world process itself and the individual jiva are themselves Real. In this, Tantra distinguishes itself both from pure dualism and from qualified non-dualism of Vedanta.

However, evolution or the 'outgoing current' is only half of the functioning of Maya. Involution, or the 'return current', takes the jiva back toward the source or root of Reality, revealing the infinite. Tantra is understood to teach the method of changing the 'outgoing current' into the 'return current', transforming the fetters created by Maya into that which 'releases' or 'liberates'. This view underscores two maxims of Tantra: "One must rise by that by which one falls" and "the very poison that kills becomes the elixir of life when used by the wise

Consciousness about false truths.

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Marathi: बाळ गंगाधर टिळक) (July 23, 1856 - August 1, 1920), was an Indian nationalist, social reformer and independence fighter who was the first popular leader of the Indian Independence Movement and is known as "Father of the Indian unrest."

Tilak was one of the first and strongest proponents for Swaraj ( complete independence) in Indian consciousness, and is considered the father of Hindu nationalism as well. His famous quote, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I will have it!" is well-remembered in India even today.

Tilak was born in Madhali Alee (Middle Lane) in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, into a middle class family. He graduated from Deccan College, Pune in 1877. [1]

After graduating, Tilak began teaching mathematics in a private school in Pune and later became a journalist. He became a strong critic of the Western education system, feeling it demeaned the Indian students and disrespected India's heritage. He organized the Deccan Education Society to improve the quality of education for India's youth. He taught Mathematics at Fergusson College.

Tilak co-founded two newspapers with Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Vishnushastri Chiplunakar and other collegues: 'Kesari' (which means 'lion' in Marathi) and was a Marathi newspaper and 'The Mahratta', an English newspaper in 1881. In just two years 'Kesari' attracted more readers than any other other language newspaper in India. The editorials were generally about the people's sufferings under the British. These newspapers called upon every Indian to fight for his or her rights.

Tilak used to say to his colleagues: "You are not writing for the university students. Imagine you are talking to a villager. Be sure of your facts. Let your words be clear as daylight."

Tilak strongly criticized the government for its brutality in suppressing free expression, especially in face of protests against the division of Bengal in 1905, and for denigrating India's culture, its people and heritage. He demanded that the British immediately give Indians the right to self-government.

Tilak joined the Indian National Congress in the 1890. He opposed its moderate attitude, especially towards the fight for self government.

In 1891 Tilak opposed the Age of Consent bill. The act raised the age at which a girl could get married from 10 to 12. The Congress and other liberals supported it, but Tilak was set against it, terming it an interference with Hinduism. However, he personally opposed child marriage, and his own daughters married at 16.

When in 1897, bubonic plague spread from Bombay to Pune the Government became jittery. The Assistant Collector of Pune, Mr. Rand, and his associates employed extremely severe and brutal methods to stop the spread of the disease by destroying even "clean homes." Even people who were not infected were carried away and in some cases, the carriers even looted property of the affected people. When the authorities turned a blind eye to all these excesses, furious Tilak took up the people's cause by publishing inflammatory articles in his paper Kesari, quoting the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, to say that no blame could be attached to anyone who killed an oppressor without any thought of reward. Following this, on 27 June, Rand and his assistant were killed. Tilak was charged with incitement to murder and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. When he emerged from prison, he had become a national hero and adopted a new slogan, "Swaraj (Self-Rule) is my birth right and I will have it."

Tilak opposed the moderate views of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and was supported by fellow Indian nationalists Bipin Chandra Pal in Bengal and Lala Lajpat Rai in Punjab. They were referred to as the Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate. In 1907,the annual session of the Congress Party was held at Surat (Gujarat). Trouble broke out between the moderate and the extremist factions of the party over the selection of the new president of the Congress and the party split into the Garam Dal ("Hot Faction," or extremists), led by Tilak, Pal and Lajpat Rai, and the Naram Dal ("Soft Faction," or moderates).

On 30 April 1908 two Bengali youths, Prafulla Chaki and Kudiram Bose, threw a bomb on a carriage at Muzzafurpur in order to kill a District Judge Douglass Kenford but erroneously killed some women travelling in it. While Chaki committed suicide when caught, Bose was tried and hanged. British papers screamed for vengeance and their shrill cries became even more insistent when Police raided and found a cache of arms at Calcutta. But Tilak in his paper Kesari defended the revolutionaries and called for immediate Swaraj or Self-rule. The Government swiftly arrested him for sedition. He asked a young Muhammad Ali Jinnah to represent him. But the British judge convicted him and he was imprisoned from 1908 to 1914 in Mandalay, Burma.

Much has been said of his trial of 1908, it being the most historic trial. His last words on the verdict of the Jury were such: "In spite of the verdict of the Jury, I maintain that I am innocent. There are higher powers that rule the destiny of men and nations and it may be the will of providence that the cause which I represent may prosper more by my suffering than my remaining free". These words now can be seen imprinted on the wall of Room. No. 46 at Bombay High Court.

Tilak had mellowed after his release in June 1914. When World war I started in August, Tilak, cabled the King-Emperor in Britain of his support and turned his oratory to find new recruits for war efforts. He welcomed The Indian Councils Act, popularly known as Minto-Morley Reforms which had been passed by British parliament in May 1909 terming it as ‘a marked increase of confidence between the Rulers and the Ruled’. Acts of violence actually retarded than hastened the pace of political reforms, he felt. He was eager for reconciliation with Congress and had abandoned his demand for direct action and settled for agitations ‘strictly by constitutional means’ - a line advocated his rival- Gopal Krishna Gokhale since beginning

Later, Tilak re-united with his fellow nationalists and re-joined the Indian National Congress in 1916. He also helped found the All India Home Rule League in 1916-18 with Annie Besant and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Tilak was impressed by the Russian Revolution, and expressed his admiration for Lenin.[2]

Tilak, who started his political life as a maratha protagonist, during his later part of life progressed into a prominent nationalist after his close association with Indian nationalists following the partition of Bengal. When asked in Calcutta whether he envisioned a Maratha type of government for Free India, Tilak replied that the Maratha dominated Governments of 17th and 18th centuries were outmoded in 20th century and he wanted a genuine federal system for Free India where every religion and race were equal partners. Only such a form of Government would be able to safe-guard India's freedom he added

[edit] Social contribution

He started public celebration of Ganesh Chaturti and Shiv Jayanti for the purpose of public gathering. There are lot of references that the Shiv-jayanti festival was started by Mahatma Phule and not by Bal Tilak.

[edit] Later years and legacy

Tilak was a critic of Mahatma Gandhi's strategy of non-violence, civil disobedience. Although once considered an extremist revolutionary, in his later years Tilak had considerably mellowed. He favored political dialogue and discussions as a more effective way to obtain political freedom for India.

When Tilak died in 1920, Gandhi paid his respects at his cremation in Bombay, along with 20,00,000 people. Gandhi called Tilak "The Maker of Modern India".

Tilak is today considered the father of Hindu Nationalism. He was the idol of Indian revolutionary Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, who penned the political doctrine of Hindutva.

Later, in 1903, he wrote the much more speculative Arctic Home in the Vedas. In it he argued that the Vedas could only have been composed in the Arctics, and the Aryan bards brought them south after the onset of the last Ice age.

Tilak also authored 'Geetarahasya' - the analysis of 'Karmayoga' in the Bhagavadgita, which is known to be gist of the Vedas and the Upanishads.

Other collections of his writings include:

The Hindu philosophy of life, ethics and religion (published in 1887).

Vedic chronology and vedanga jyotisha.

Letters of Lokamanya Tilak, edited by M. D. Vidwans.

Selected documents of Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, 1880-1920, edited by Ravindra Kumar.

Poster triptych (or single poster now) for hank's class based on the flannery o'connor concept that "everything that rises must converge."

Posters based on african-americans turning a pejorative used against them into a word of power, when the actual truth is that there is no power in changing the word because it is still an identity trapped in the original reference to the race. If we are to find our own identity, we must let go of that word altogether.

DuBois idea: "Double consciousness, a consciousness that yields him no TRUE self-consciousness, but only lets him see himself through the revelation of the other world. It is a peculiar sensation this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of the world that looks on i amused contempt and pity"

Origins of Consciousness and Language Acquisition.

Line map shewing the manner in which we acquire fixated consciousness through lingustic conditioning of child mind by surrounding cultural inputs.

Starting with non-linguistic sensory organisation and differentiation (top left) then moving into tone-meaning, basic tone-signature then 'word' association in sensory processes and acquisition of associative memory.. The basic building blocks.

The we move into acquisition of rudimentary grammar, action/reaction, mimickry, rudimentary causality and self awareness.

This followed by expanding vocabulary, symbol/reading skills and formal primary education.

Our conceptual frameworks derive from these early experiences AND the structure of the native language we inhabit.

I found that pre-composing then looking slightly away helped in trying to take a natural shot. Still, I wasn't usually fast enough to take the shot, unless they were too busy laughing.

What you really are is consciousness. In this consciousness, there are things that appear and disappear again. You are the ocean, where waves come and go again. Such waves can be anything. They can be a feeling, a thought, an emotion, a person, or an experience. They appear and disappear. Everything appears in you and disappears in you; what you really are stays untouched. The ocean will always be water, no matter how many waves there are. If this insight is accepted, you will notice the waves, rather than losing yourself in them. You are consciousness, and in that consciousness, a plethora of things appear. You also appear and disappear as a body/mind system. Even the idea that you are the chauffeur of that system comes and goes. What you really are is not‐two. Everything is one. Given the fact that every form of diversity is only imaginary, our true nature is unity and love. Enlightenment ● Paul Smit via 500px ift.tt/1JrLqdd

This consciousness that is myself of selves, that is everything, and yet nothing at all – what is it?

-Julian Jaynes (The maverick revolutionary psychologist from Princeton who wrote ‘The Origin of Consciousness in the breakdown of bicameral mind’).

Three millennia ago, Julian Jaynes says, human beings had no consciousness. He says, there was a pre-conscious mind that was not as evolved as our brains today. Back then, two hemispheres of the brain acted independently and activity in one hemisphere was perceived by the other as ‘voices’ from outside. Societies were built and burned by men who heard such compelling voices. In the utter crux of the matter, there was simplicity… a man’s action was dictated by some power 'outside' his being and authority.

And then the human brain evolved. Over the course of its evolution, the brain has managed to be the most complex computing system, a puddle of eighty to ninety billion neurons that form an incomprehensible network where information is stored as memory or dreams, processed in the realms of ‘awareness’ or the subconscious, and ‘realities’ are conjured from perception. As it evolved and became more complex, both hemispheres were wired more efficiently and voices no longer came from outside but soared from deep within. We started to hear ourselves within the bounds of our conceptual space and time. All of a sudden, we were aware of our options, decisions and their repercussions. We became aware of being aware. This loss of innocence was managed in different ways by different minds. As old habits flickered in the modern brain, many of us yearned and searched for alternatives to those disembodied voices. Alternately, some of us accepted the loneliness that came along with being conscious and practiced the art of self to level of selfishness. And then there are few eccentrics who fall in neither category.

One such lunatic saw the distant star flirting with the horizon the other evening and heard its faint voices deep inside. These feeble voices assured the crazy mind of a brand new consciousness in coming days that will let him hear voices from the outside again. Voices from the stars, planets or comets, voices from sky, clouds or the rain, voices from leaves that are green, yellow or gray, voices from beetles or butterflies, voices from mud, clay or wind, voices from every bit of non-self. The lunatic somehow knew that this modified consciousness will allow the mind to balance the inner voice with those from the outside and render him the most harmonious state of consciousness… a consciousness that will be innocent again.

As for you my friend, since the human brain is still evolving, you will do better if you don’t laugh at such possibilities consciously.

About:

Human beings continuously mutate. Over the last few years, this transformation has taken place at incredibly high speeds, mostly thanks to the wide and ubiquitous availability of digital networks and devices.

This changed the ways in which we work, learn, relate, consume, communicate, love.

Enlarge Your Consciousness in 4 Days 4 Free uses people’s real time emotional expressions on social networks to animate a physical installation.

The emotions of millions of users on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and FourSquare are harvested in real time (using open available APIs and techniques such as Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning) and used to give life to physical manifestations and info-aesthetic visualizations.

The project is the result of a wonderful collaboration between Salvatore Iaconesi / Oriana Persico (Art is Open Source) and Lara Mezzapelle / Giacomo Deriu.

"Enlarge Your Consciousness in 4 Days 4 Free!" was officially launched at BT’F Contemporary Art Gallery Friday, January 27th 2012, as an official initiative of Arte Fiera OFF.

I normally don't like photos this heavily washed in light, but the natural diffusion of the scene of my morning coffee really seemed to capture my hazy consciousness.

"Compassion is Consciousness expressed through your actions and words. Compassion is the art of non-hurting. Compassion cannot hurt. Compassion cannot hurt anyone because compassion is Consciousness manifested. Consciousness cannot hurt anyone. Just as the sky cannot hurt anyone and space cannot hurt anyone, the manifestation of Consciousness, compassion, cannot hurt anyone. One who has compassion can only be compassionate."
