You think, so you speak.
...So you exist.
Never compromise your freedom to speak up.
21 February is the International Mother Language Day. In 1952, young souls of Bangladesh embraced death while protesting for our freedom to speak in 'Bengali', our very own mother language.
Everyday there seems to be another social networking site demanding our time and compromising our privacy. We are faced with the dilemma of where to invest our time to build up our social network: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Google +, etc.
For the next couple of months I will be immersed in the original social networking...backpacking or in my case flashpacking.
Backpacking is a term associated with low-cost, independent international travel. Flashpacking is backpacking but with a bigger budget. Usually the flashpacking crowd are individuals who have backpacked in the past but now are a little older and have more disposable income. On the other hand, because they have a background in backpacking, they realize the benefits of budget travel, but also the little quirks associated with it too. Shared bathrooms with clogged shower drains, sleeping in bunk beds in a huge dormitory with twenty snorers, riding public transportation with a fellow backpacker who hasn’t showered in a week and with a local whose pet (i.e. rooster) attempts to poke your eye out at every opportunity.
Occasionally I will still engage in my backpacking roots by staying in a hostel and sleeping in a dormitory. It’s a great way to meet other travelers and to get up to date travel information. For the most part, I stay in guest houses with private rooms with a bathroom and hot shower. The only snoring is my own.
Flashpackers also happen to travel with laptops, iPods and fancy Canon cameras which perfectly describes me.
Traveling independently on a budget is a great way to network with fellow travelers and locals. Unlike Facebook, Twitter and Google + you don’t post photos from ten years ago when we were thirty pounds lighter and had less facial wrinkles. What you see is what you get. You talk, exchange travel stories and share where you’ve been and where you’re going. The best part is there’s no typing involved, thus giving your fingers a rest.
I started my trip a month ago in the beautiful city-state of Singapore. The moment I landed in their world class airport I fell in love with the city. What’s not to love? The diversity of cultures and religion, the amazing food, clean streets, low crime and they hang (that’s right hang) people who are involved in any drug related crimes. My type of city.
The moment I arrived at my hostel I met John from England. He had been in Singapore for over a week and offered to give me a quick tour of the city. We covered Little India, Burgis Market and the Clarke Quay. We had dinner at a great hawker stall and then headed out to the Marina Bay Sands Resort. Billion dollar views and the construction costs to match it.
This is a photograph of the ArtScience Museum (part of the Marina Bay Sands Resort) with the Singapore skyline in the background. I shot this handheld as I didn’t bring my normal Manfrotto tripod for space considerations (I did bring my table top Manfrotto tripod but I didn’t have a place to elevate it for this shot). A great introduction to a great city.
Stay tuned for more of my adventures in Southeast Asia.
Happy Travels!

"He's compromising
At least he's got a job for life
Get born, get school, get job, get car
Pay tax and find a wife
And on that note
The end can't come too soon
If you're not living on the edge
You take up too much room"

Final had a chance to process this on the plane on the way back from Berlin, and uploaded in heathrow via iPhone tether. Never done that before, and it seems to work pretty well. So the photo.... Had to do a fair amount to get it to this stage, so used photomatix and processed this as an HDR from a single raw file. Jinked around with sharpness and smoothing to get the best compromise and finally did a bit of the spli toning to get a distinction between blue parts and sunset parts. Overall I think this might be the pick of the bunch from Berlin, but still a few to process......

As many of you photographers will appreciate, a slightly daunting shot. I wasn't sure I could get the foreground and distance sufficiently crisp given the necessary compromise in focus distance. Fairly pleased, as it turns out.
Lego Sopwith Camel F.1 - 1/9.2 scale (uncovered airframe)
I have been contemplating building an uncovered Sopwith Camel for a few years now after I acquired a 1/16 Hasegawa model kit of the same style. I built it alongside my Lego English Electric Lightning F.6, the two models together taking 1.5 years to complete. The scale was defined by the Lego 8x8 dish and 81.6 x 14.2 tyre and results in a model with a wingspan of 93cm. I have owned the two official Lego Sopwith Camel releases to date but the shape and proportions of those kits are very compromised so I liked the idea of producing a “UCS Camel”. The model has functioning control surfaces attached to the control column and rudder, a detailed cockpit and Clerget 9B rotary engine.
In order to make the wings strong enough with very little room for hidden structure I used aftermarket aluminium Lego style liftarms for the wing spars. The main wing, tailplane and undercarriage rigging is made from grey Lego string but the internal rigging and control wires are made from fine gauge steel wire as Lego string was too thick for a scale look. The internal rigging is not structural but the main wing rigging of the model serves a critical purpose as, much like real biplanes, it provides a lot of the strength to support the lower wing dihedral angle that in turn provides support to the upper wing via the cabane struts. Without the tensioned strings the model’s wings would sag considerably.
Many thanks for looking.

You can't always get what you want. Such was the case with the Tracy Turn on April 30, 2016.
Union Pacific 2002, the Salt Lake City Olympics locomotive, was assigned to the turn. After missing the train at Lodi and the Stockton Diamonds, I ran to the Mossdale Drawbridge in Manteca. The bridge is located in the River Islands subdivision. As I was setting up, I was chased out by a rent-a-cop. The "cop" followed me to the gate.
Miffed, I quickly consulted Google Maps, and set out for the small community of Banta. After checking all of the photo angles, I found a good one. Not the best, and definitely not the shot I wanted.
So, submitted for your approval, a shot of the Tracy Turn at Banta. This was the location I really wanted to get my shot at:

As we Ladies become "women of a certain age," the question becomes, Do we continue to dress like we did when we were younger? Or, do we give in to what society expects and dress like old ladies?
Thus, as I am well into my 70s, this is an example how I want to present myself
It’s not easy to take this shot without compromising yourself. Stanier Black 5 45407, ‘The Lancashire Fusilier’ negotiates the famous viaduct at Glenfinnan, immortalised in the Harry Potter films. With onboard photographers vying for position. competition for the Window in the doors proved to be rather fierce. The fallback position meant resorting to taking any shot of the train negotiating the bridge, by using the top sliding window to get that ‘one particular shot’ of the moment…..well here’s the result of my endeavours. The engine brakes at the end of the viaduct to stop in Glenfinnan where all passengers will be able to spend 15 minutes swarming all over the station while getting in each other’s way, or buying souvenirs. But hey-Ho. It is what it is. A dramatic location nonetheless!
Modular. On the agenda: figuring out a better way to make stronger joints without compromising poseability.
There are a lot of compromises here; so please accept it for what it is, an approximate representation of a type of truck rarely seen in Western European counties. Hungarian truck builder RABA used many bought-in components including, from 1970, the DAF 2800-type cab. This fictional image is based on a DAF and the chassis details are wholly DAF. Hungariocamion was, at one time, a state-owned company with a monopoly in long-distance transport. Its monopoly status was lifted in the 1970s and the company passed into the private sector in 1998, Thanks to Martin Vonk for the DAF 3300 base image (23-Apr-16).

A perfect setting for a werewolf to head out for a stroll. Not an easy shot to take. Forget that it is in the 20's, There is a fine line to balance the brightness of the moon -- like taking a picture of a light bulb -- and capturing the subtle shadows of the trees back-lit by moon light. One or the other would be fine, but both in the same photograph requires compromise.

Stagecoach 15440 (KX08 KZC) arrives at Sandwich with a 43 for Canterbury on the 7th of August 2018. I had planned a shot here, but this was far from the composition I wanted. That all went pear shaped when a van driver pulled up on the double yellows to my right to ask for directions somewhere, shortly before the bus was due, and the pillock, despite getting back into his van with plenty of time to get out of my way, decided not to pull off until the bus had passed. Oh well, I wasn`t going to hang around for another hour when the sun angle would then be wrong, so a compromised record shot it had to be. I will try again another day, no doubt!

There's always some compromise when you recreate an object in Lego, and this build is a fine example of that tenet. On it's own, it's a perfectly serviceable representation of a golf club, but it's very difficult to represent the subtle contours and concave slopes of modern clubs with Lego. I considered building this one 4X larger, but sadly, I just didn't have time.
This image is compromised by a partial double exposure caused by a fault on the camera film winding mechanism (something which no longer troubles us!) but it seems a pity not to show it bearing in mind the effort made by the crew to produce the smoke as 25NC 3467 is seen near Behrshoek on 13.8.96 with an 11:00 De Aar - Beaconsfield special freight
The Dry LIne's 107 is taking a break in the shade of the I-80 bridge that spans the Mississippi River in Davenport, IA. The short terminal road was co-owned by Burlington Northern and the Milwaukee Road. Maybe they fought over the color scheme and compromised with black and white. What would you get if you mixed green and orange?
The Boss had a craving for pancakes for breakfast. Me? Not so much. As a compromise, we headed over to a fairly recently opened local restaurant, Stacked (Pancake & Breakfast House), on the West of the Grimsby, Ontario downtown. Once seated and engaged in perusing the menu, a rather lengthy process for some members of the family, ahem, the sun broke through the heavy cloud cover and cast a small slit of sunbeam onto the condiments tray on the adjacent table. Now, I am sure any of you with an interest in street photography have seen the classic (cliche?) shot of the person caught in such a narrow slanting sunbeam and I am also subject to such temptations (www.flickr.com/photos/jwvraets/52577936307/in/datetaken/ ). Not being one to discriminate against inanimate objects however, I waited until the beam caught the rather attractive ketchup squeeze bottle as seen here. Also, given the wall colour scheme in this part of the restaurant as well as the obvious red of both the ketchup bottle and the syrup dispenser, this is Red Rule shot. - JW
