Shooting on the hoof is always a compromise and this image is a good example of that. Having missed a glorious rainbow on my way home from work on the previous afternoon, I decided to take my camera gear to work the following day just in case I encountered favourable conditions. As I approached Sawley Marina, I could already see banks of mist rising from the surface of the River Trent and its surrounding area. Not wishing to miss out, I hurriedly parked and rushed to the edge of the Sawley Cut. There was no time to set up a tripod or mess about with filtration as I composed this image by standing on a small wooden jetty. This was probably the best I could do under the circumstances and I know that I saw what I considered to be the strongest composition from my car as I crossed the bridge over the Trent, but there was no way I could have got there in time or got to work on time. I also regret the vapour trails in the sky - traditionally a big no-no in the world of serious landscape photography, though I am not prepared to clone them out as they were there and I don't wish to be dishonest. It's difficult to avoid them with this location being so close to East Midlands Airport.

This is one of those images that I felt that was not so well shot in my opinion because of the poor lighting at night which resulted with some compromises being made such as significant noise from high ISO. Still, I would imagine that using a tripod in this instance at Gangnam would not create the kind of street shot that I wanted.

Anyway this is the sort of the daily photograhy challenges that I crave and improve at!

Pitigliano and its area were inhabited in Etruscan times but the first extant written mention of it dates only to 1061. In the early 13th century it belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family and by the middle of the century it had become the capital of the surrounding county.

In 1293 the county passed to the Orsini family, signalling the start of 150 years of on-again/off-again wars with Siena, at the end of which, in 1455, a compromise of sorts was reached: Siena acknowledged the status of county to Pitigliano, which in exchange placed herself under the sovereignty of Siena.

From then onwards the history of Pitigliano resorbs into the gradually wider ambit first of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (1562) then of the united Kingdom of Italy.

Reigned 1100AD - 1135AD

Fourth Son of William the Conqueror and brother to William aka Rufus. He was present at his brothers death, possible murder.

He married Matilda who was a descendant of Alfred the Great, and in doing so gave future monarchs a direct line back to the Saxon Royal House.

He was a effective ruler, but some considered him harsh. He skilfully manipulated the barons in England and Normandy. In England, he built on the existing Anglo-Saxon system of justice, local government and taxation. He encouraged ecclesiastical reform, but became embroiled in a serious dispute in 1101 with Archbishop Anselm of Canterbury, which was resolved through a compromise solution in 1105.

With the bird flying almost towards me and me facing into the flight this was never going to be as crisp as other shots.....however there's something about this I really like - mainly the light in the background reed beds and the softness that it creates in the image.

Got plenty to keep me busy however I do get an itchy shutter finger when the weather stops play. Where's this crisp, hard winter that was getting talked about?

Press L but no more as can't take too much.

Lancer: "ShadowKnight Actual, this is codename Lancer. The mission has met complications, I was unable to take the primary extraction with the rest of the team and need immediate pickup, over."

ShadowKnight Actual: "Acknowledged, Lancer. I'll get back to you on the extraction method. What was the hold-up?"

Lancer: "Uhh... I was holding back hostiles while the team was breaking for the helipad. Nearly made it."

ShadowKnight Actual: "Ah, here we go. We cannot send any more aircraft for your extraction, because the US has finished stalling. Darkwater cannot take the risk of Pan-Asia discovering our cooperation with the United States. The USS Honey Badger has agreed to send a small transport boat to the coordinates 7-5... Here... I marked the extraction point on your NAV system. Copy, over?"

Lancer: "Affirmative ShadowKnight Actual. I have the coordinates."

ShadowKnight Actual: "Lancer, you have a window of 75 minutes to make to the harbor before the boat returns to the carrier. Keep a low profile. I suggest taking a route through alleys or through the sewage system. I must warn you that Tokyo is still on lockdown, which means there is a chance that either civilians or personnel may be lurking within the sewers. Just don't get caught, over."

Lancer: "Copied. In the event that I do not make it to the pickup zone on time, what will happen?"

ShadowKnight Actual: "... Don't let that happen. Over and out."

Fuji X-E3, Fujinon XF 35/1.4. The brain damage last year was serious. He has survived, but his brilliant mind is struggling to re-discover the man he once was. Everything has been compromised, movements, language and memory. The books he wrote he can't understand any more. And he is aware of it. He knows that a whole world of knowledge, language and self has gone. He has been lovingly taken care of, at home. The place he would prefer to stay. He is also aware that he should be grateful for having survived and being loved. But, sometimes, it is hard to stay positive. Sometimes, he is overcome by dark thoughts. My friend Stephen.

This rake is a trial by Auirzon compromising of 3x 6000 class locomotives. This set up is required because a 6000 cannot do a straight swap for a 5000 or 5020 class locomotive, which are commonly used on Aurizon's coal rakes in the Hunter Valley.

Feb 9, 1964: But, their manager, Brian Epstein, would have none of that nonsense and the rest is history. But you have to imagine how their image and consequential popularity could have been compromised if they complied with the impresario's dictate!

Reminds me of the old Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog cartoons where the factory whistle blows and they stop chasing each other until the lunch hour is over.

I've seen Robber Flies during their amorous activities many times...but never in this position before! It appears they've learned a new trick from the Kama Sutra!

This is my last click of a shutter for year 2010. Ironically this is also the first upload for 2011. :-) May this brand new year brings more positives to all of us.

Flash fired at 1/16 from the above. Diffused through a light box.

Rest day for me on Monday. Forecast was wall to wall sun down the coast and also throughout the wider Cumbria so I devised a plan.

I was going to shoot the 05.46 BIF - CAR at St. Bees but the lazyarse in me decided to have a couple of snoozes so that decision was revoked in favour of Flimby.

Then a Kingmoor - Sellafield working was activated in the path of the 6C22 flasks so there was another re-jig as the workings would pass at Flimby. There would be better lighting for trains in opposite directions at Workington docks and I would have time to re-frame for a southbound shot following the northbound.

Anyway, here's 37409 at Derwent Junction. Sun's not quite on the nose but you can't have it all.

It’s a compromised composition from what I wanted as people were everywhere. The Jackson locals shared that this has been the busiest Labor Day week in memory.

from my "Color Me" series that's under development.

A Femme Fatale - a mysterious and seductive woman whose charms ensnare her lovers in bonds of irresistible desire, often leading them into compromising, dangerous, and deadly situations; denying confirmation of her affection. She usually drives him to the point of obsession and exhaustion, so that he is incapable of making rational decisions. She is an archetype of literature and art. Her ability to entrance and hypnotize her victim with a spell was in the earliest stories seen as being literally supernatural; hence, the Femme Fatale today is still often described as having a power akin to an enchantress, seductress, or witch.

Human beings are born solitary, but everywhere they are in chains - daisy chains - of interactivity. Social actions are makeshift forms, often courageous, sometimes ridiculous, always strange. And in a way, every social action is a negotiation, a compromise between 'his,' 'her' or 'their' wish and yours.

Splashers are often one of the most frustrating parts of steam engine building. Unless the wheel can somehow fit inside or behind the splasher, compromises often have to be made on other scaling aspects of the model.

Hopefully this method might be useful for some. I developed it while playing around with options for a possible GWR Castle Class.

The wheel is a Breckland Bricks XLL driver.

Movement down the left hallway, sprint down the right. Take the lift up 14 levels, challenge the protocol droid "What does a rancor eat on Kamino?" If the answer is "Cloned fish bait," you're in. If it's "a wampa," you've been compromised and the entire station is mobilizing against you. We just needed to rescue a droid and two political prisoners. We still lost three transport ships and 58 troopers before we jumped into hyperspace from right inside the landing bay. Mission accomplished, now a new battlefront will open.

So I compromised my principles and used a "contact call" to try to pull this young male into the foreground. Some success in moving him to the periphery, but the the clarity here is very weak.

Further experimentation yielded better results....

The middle ground is easy to find when the view looks the same in both directions. These symmetrical reflections on Blair Lake gave me pause to engage in some more of my ridiculously fluffy thoughts. I ought to be in Congress--naw, those guys couldn't couldn't agree on the contents of an unopened bag of Doritos.

Compromise? I always like to give the main falls an exposure around one second, (or much longer) to give a smooth "veil" appearance, however the small lower falls here, with this much water, really looks best IMO with an exposure around 1/4 sec, so this is a compromise, with around 0.5 sec, with neither looking quite as good as I'd like. (I really should try to "blend" the two best exposures in Photoshop, but I've never found my way around with it.)

This is a shot I captured at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 rally course during the morning rally. I really liked the colour and contrast of this car especially as it was caught in the sun amongst a dark woodland scene.

I had aspirations to go backpacking up on a mountain somewhere last night, but as always, the weather crapped up again on Friday evening. A few puffy clouds with haze and then overcast...I didn't miss anything so glad to not go to the trouble. This morning slept in late, generally a hindrance to getting any good shots in photography, but some light rain had come bringing fog into the mountains.

July is a tough month for me in obtaining good shots, and particularly being motivated since it follows June that is typically my best month. I have been keeping tabs on the Woodland Sunflowers up on the parkway and they have pretty much come in, so I figured today to be a great chance at them with fog. This has become an annual event for me since I find it the best photo op in my area the entire summer.

Though the conditions were absolutely perfect for this type of scenery, they were absolutely tough for photography. The rain was pretty light, but collecting in the canopy for massive "dumps" when the wind whipped on through. The stiff breeze was almost constant, making this type of long stemmed flower bob and weave around in almost continuous motion. The dim conditions wanted a rather lengthy shutter speed, but I was forced to take up the ISO more than normal in order to have any chance at all. Water droplets splashing onto the lens, and regular fogging when the lens cap was installed. My original session with this flower was compromised with motion, discovered a few miles down the parkway when I stopped for another shot and looked over things a little closer, so had to go back for a second try.

I liked this scene with the wet, lush ferns, the foggy "Lord of the Rings" look of the forest, and this one sunflower growing up out of it all. This was a pretty simple process of 2 images of one stop difference blended with luminosity masking and levels adjustment...forgot to sharpen.

“When you're socially awkward, you're isolated more than usual, and when you're isolated more than usual, your creativity is less compromised by what has already been said and done. All your hope in life starts to depend on your craft, so you try to perfect it. One reason I stay isolated more than the average person is to keep my creativity as fierce as possible. Being the odd one out may have its temporary disadvantages, but more importantly, it has its permanent advantages.” - Criss Jami, Killosophy

An abandoned Castle in Italy in the process of being rescued Non Plus Ultra.

We had been told this beautiful castle in Italy would be a hard one to crack, we made it there early in the morning, only to be surprised by a crowd waiting outside to go in. This castle has been derelict for many years, but once a year its gates are opened so the public can look inside and we had chosen that day to try and get inside. It made our life easier as we joined the tour group and then subsequently got lost inside while they followed the room by room tour.

I have wanted to see this building from the 1600's for years, since I first gazed on its magnificent abandoned beauty in some friends photos. It did not disappoint, room upon room of detail, elegance and decoration like in this one.

I went back and forth on the colour balance but settled on this compromise. The light was very yellow/magenta in the last minutes of the day.

A bit of a compromise this one. I desperately want to get back to some traditional landscapes but I also want to publish something different. I need a lot more practice and no small amount of good luck before that happens.

I don't have many unpublished photos in my back catalogue, but this is another one that keeps grabbing my attention, which I quite like. I thinks it;s the palette that appeals to me.

I find the weight in the right of the frame to be a little too unbalanced which is why I haven't published it before.

I was trying to get some more bird shots by the fountain but the bees kept driving them off (kinda odd) So I had to settle for a water shot instead.

The We're Here! gang was visiting the space helmet group yesterday...somehow I thought it was today. LOL

Bittersweet build, glad to have built it but there are still some obvious flaws.

The front end was tough, for the nose I could have replaced the 1x1 red cheese slope in the middle with a 1x1 black tile, but I chose to keep the slope so the nose protrudes a little. And the studded wedge plates for the bonnet made the nose/front a little too high. It was hard to find any compromise.
