Who remembers these gizmos? This is the legendary Sony CD Walkman D-E221 ESP Max from the 80's. Photo taken for the Crazy Tuesday group's October theme "Obsolete Electronics". Still pretty good sound, though! Photo available for editorial licensing at Shutterstock: www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/brisbane-queensland-aust...
Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The format was originally developed to store and play only sound recordings (CD-DA) but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM).
Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 in) and can hold up to about 80 minutes of uncompressed audio or about 700 MiB of data.
At the time of the technology's introduction in 1982, a CD could store much more data than a personal computer hard drive, which would typically hold 10 MB. By 2010, hard drives commonly offered as much storage space as a thousand CDs, while their prices had plummeted to commodity level. In 2004, worldwide sales of audio CDs, CD-ROMs and CD-Rs reached about 30 billion discs. By 2007, 200 billion CDs had been sold worldwide.
From the early 2000s CDs were increasingly being replaced by other forms of digital storage and distribution, with the result that by 2010 the number of audio CDs being sold in the U.S. had dropped about 50% from their peak; however, they remained one of the primary distribution methods for the music industry. In 2014, revenues from digital music services matched those from physical format sales for the first time.
The Long Player album is making a comeback as this display shows in one of the few record stores remaining in London
A family trip yesterday to Messums Wiltshire to see the stunning 'Time and Place' installations by Bruce Munro. The 16th century barn was used for the 'C-scales' installation, audio-visual floor installation made up of thousands of overlapping CDs and DVDs. The photo doesn't really do it justice. One of the most visually stunning and relaxing installations i've seen.

This is a portion of my music collection. I decided to lay some of my cds out in the studio (yes some). This took 2 days to layout, 5 years to collect cds, and numerous test shots to get the lighting right. I'm still not happy with the results but I gave it my best shot. Just wanted to show how much I love music. Thanks Tecia for taking the shot. Maybe you can spot your cd.
EDITED PHOTO: Because I don't like Rakim's music, I have decided NOT to put any hearts in this photo. I did not even want to put any stars in this photo. I'm sure glad that this was not a "707" CD or an "Alice Cooper" CD that was tossed out onto the street. Rakim does NOT sound anything like the great classic music of the 60's, 70's, or the 80's. I have tried to make this photo look very colorful, artistic, and pretty. I used both programs "Paint" and "PhotoPad Image Editor" to edit this photo.
The aching love poetry is by a guy whose name is Micheal Plaster whose band name is Soul Whirling Somewhere and the name of this poem is called Nani and this song can be found on an album by Micheal Plaster of Soul Whirling Somewhere called Please Send Help.

I keep track of my CD collection I with the help of an excellent little program called Orange CD Catalog which I've been using for a long time. I love it.
The other day I thought of dumping all the cover images into a folder, and using picasa to do a collage.
Voila!
.
Water droplets on a scratched CD. I did clean it just before setting this up and still had to edit out cat hair. That stuff is pervasive.....
I found an old copy of Adobe Creative Suite 5 software installation package on compact disc (CD). Reminds me that I'm old. I think the layer of dust just adds to my old age. I wish I had those AOL discs.
Analog versus digital. Vinyl record versus compact disc.
A blast from my Toronto past. Detail shot of the 1982 Spoons album "Arias & Symphonies", which contains the classic track "Nova Heart".
EDITED PHOTO: The CD was colorized and I added in the hearts and stripes. I did all the editing on "June 3, 2021". I used two programs to do the editing. I used "PhotoPad Image Editor" for the colorization on the CD and I used "Paint" for the hearts and stripes. Before I done the colorization, I inverted the photo to change the color of the pavement. The original photo was vertical. I changed it to horizontal. This was a "Rakim" CD that I seen outside on the street. I picked up the CD to see who was on it. I sampled "Rakim" on "YouTube" to see what he sounded like. It was lousy hip hop. I did NOT like it at all. I have the hearts in the photo to make it look pretty and interesting. It was NOT out of love for "Rakim".

Test Pattern is a system that converts any type of data (text, sounds, photos and movies) into barcode patterns and binary patterns of 0s and 1s. Through its application, this project aims to examine the relationship between critical points of device performance and the threshold of human perception. From large-scale installations to live performances, the Test Pattern project has been derived from many different types of application since 2008, including a Compact Disc version and the more notable series of site-specific installations. This is the first publication related to the project.

Digital streaming has made it easy to instantly enjoy new music from around the world. It’s fast. It’s convenient. It’s one of the best ways for artists to get their music discovered.
But it’s unfortunately not really profitable.
2021 marked the first increase in new CD sales in 17 years! Artists have embraced CDs as a physical representation of their music, drawing in new collectors and fans. CDs have experienced a remarkable comeback, reaffirming their position as a timeless and treasured format in the music industry.
