I find out by chance about a procession “that is not marked on the web maps”, I can’t find anything about it even though I searched for a long time on the Internet, and yet the “report” seems true, a procession so little known is something I can’t let slip, I’ll go, then we’ll see; the procession, a mix of devotion and deep respect between the priest and the villagers, is there, it is celebrated in the village near Novara di Sicilia, called Badiavecchia, and “the Saint” is Saint Hugh the Abbott, patron saint of the village and of Novara di Sicilia itself. Personally, I am always fascinated by how events that happened centuries ago remain alive in popular devotion. In the film “Gladiator”, General Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) incites his legionaries against the barbarians in one scene and says, “What we do in life echoes in eternity!”, and this is exactly what happens with Sicilian religious processions and festivals. The celebrated Saints resemble an inexhaustible echo that reverberates in popular traditions. The story of Saint Hugh the Abbot (or Saint Hugh of Novara of Sicily) deserves an important historical preview, with Roger II, king of Sicily, (called the Norman), a unique figure especially if compared to his time, he was an enlightened and liberal king, who distinguished himself in the political panorama of those times, where massacring each other with the many wars seemed to be the only interest of the tyrants of the time; he was not interested in wars, Sicily under his guidance became a commercially and culturally flourishing island, also favored in this by its location in the center of the Mediterranean, a crossroads-hinge of three continents, between North and South, between East and West; the rest of the continent is at war against the infidels, Roger II instead welcomed all religions on the island, leaving freedom of worship to one's own god, thus a peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians is achieved, at the court of King Roger there are men of culture, intellectuals, even of Muslim origin, architects, masters of the arts and science, philosophy and politics; the three great cultures of the Mediterranean collaborated with each other, in Sicily the racial harmony and tolerance of King Roger, materialized in a unique reality present only in the his Sicily, which will last only 64 years, a happy period that will end with his death: Roger had demonstrated that an alternative was possible (this consideration is also valid for the terrible current events ...). This is to introduce Ugo (who was not yet a Saint in his lifetime), King Roger II wanted the construction of a monastery in Novara di Sicilia, begun in 1137, to be completed, and to do this he asked the abbot of Chiaravalle to send his monks (belonging to the Cistercian order) to the kingdom of Sicily. Ugo, a disciple of Saint Bernard of Chiaravalle, was among these monks, and he was entrusted with the management of the monastery; he died in Novara di Sicilia on November 17, but the year of his death is unknown; he was proclaimed patron saint of Novara di Sicilia in 1666, also becoming patron saint of the village of Badiavecchia. The procession I photographed was held in Badiavecchia, two things struck me, the relationship that existed between the priest Father Mario and his parishioners, a sincere relationship, of esteem, of brotherhood, comparable to that which can be experienced in a large extended family, the second thing, that unlike many processions-patron saint festivals, here there was no musical band, but a skilled violinist, followed by a collaborator who carried with her an amplified speaker, which served to spread and the poignant music made with the electronic violin, and the words of Don Mario amplified with a microphone, words that were said going to the various small neighborhoods (of Badiavecchia, and of Vallancazza, another village) stopping in front of the houses, with the parishioners listening at the door or in front of the windows, listening to the words of comfort said by Don Mario. I wanted to “tell with images” this very sweet procession, made above all with the heart, of a Sicily that has the appearance of a dizzying dive into the past, of a Sicily that still, evidently exists, but nevertheless difficult to find easily.

…………………………………………………

I woke up early this morning as the forecast was for early mist and I wanted to capture some nice early mist landscapes this year. Took this in Slaley Forest Northumberland not far from where I live. The colours of the bracken particularly caught my eye when I was looking for a composition. The mist was not so dense in the woods but enough to give the photograph a softer more serene feel to it. I also liked the way the spiky branches stood out on the trees.

Many thanks for views, faves and commends dear friends.

Sometimes you make your own luck then sometimes you just get lucky!

Despite not having the drone with me on our weekend trip to London, I wasn't going to be prevented from getting some 'top-down' aerial abstract shots. Taken from the glass walkway in Tower Bridge, I had set up the composition and was waiting for a open top tourist bus to photograph. One went past and took a couple of shots then this one appeared, just as I took the shot a speed boat popped into the frame, bang on a third into the frame.... Boom!

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina (Sicily);

I made photos related to "street photography";

I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;

I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina (Sicilia);

ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;

ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;

I made photos related to "street photography";

I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;

I came across a mural whose faces were erased with a spray can: it was deliberately defaced, outraged, whoever did this, for political purposes and for reasons of opportunism, then published this gesture on Facebook, as if it were a trophy, causing serious damage not only to the whole community of Taormina, but also to anyone who comes to Taormina, who must be able to enjoy its natural, cultural and artistic beauties: now this mural created by the street artist TVBOY entitled "Saint Carola protectress of refugees" has been horribly mutilated by her beauty, but, even so ... it cannot fail to arouse emotion, because that black spray that has erased the faces, (to me) seems to have given the work even more voice, the voice of suffering of those who travel to other worlds, knowing they are going to meet enormous risks and a future full of uncertainties: a future as black as that spray; so I wanted to know (and photograph) the other two murals by TVBOY, an artist of Sicilian origins, one depicts the pop singer Mahmood, a work entitled "Saint Mahmood", the other work is titled "Homage to the master Andrea Camilleri";

I photographed the spectacular eruption of the Etna volcano which took place on the evening of 01/18-2021, using a telephoto lens;

these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.

ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;

mi sono imbattuto in un murales i cui volti sono stati cancellati con una bomboletta spray: è stato volutamente deturpato, oltraggiato, chi ha fatto ciò, per scopi politici e per motivi di opportunismo, ha poi pubblicato tale gesto su Facebook, come se fosse un trofeo, arrecando un danno gravissimo non solo a tutta la comunità di Taormina, ma anche a chiunque venga a Taormina, che deve poter godere delle sue bellezze naturali, culturali ed artistiche: adesso questo murales realizzato ad opera dello street artist TVBOY intitolato “Santa Carola protettrice dei rifugiati” è stato orrendamente mutilato della sua bellezza, ma, anche così…non può non suscitare commozione, perché quello spray nero che ha cancellato i volti, (a me) sembra aver dato all’opera ancora più voce, la voce della sofferenza di chi si mette in viaggio verso altri mondi, sapendo di andare incontro a enormi rischi e ad un futuro colmo di incertezze: un futuro nero come quello spray; ho voluto così conoscere (e fotografare) gli altri due murales di TVBOY, artista di origini siciliane, uno raffigura il cantante pop Mahmood, opera intitolata “San Mahmood”, l’altra opera si intitola “Omaggio al maestro Andrea Camilleri”;

Ho fotografato la spettacolare eruzione del vulcano Etna avvenuta la sera del 18-01-2021, utilizzando un teleobiettivo;

This photographic story was made on the occasion of the "Laurel and Sacred Oils feast" which took place this year 2022 on Easter Monday in the Sicilian town of Forza D'Agrò (in the province of Messina), after a long stop due to the Covid-19 pandemic; this is a traditional event that has taken place for centuries with changes that have come about over the years, in fact once the population of Forza D'Agrò went in procession to the Norman monastery of Saints Peter and Paul where the Holy Oils were kept: this church is located in the village of Casalvecchio Siculo (Forza D'Agrò and Casalvecchio Siculo are located on two mountains, the two villages are visible to each other, since in ancient times this represented a very fast means to be able to communicate visually between them, in case of raids by Saracen pirates), this church was built by the Normans, it was originally located on the opposite side of where it is now located, this is because a flood of the Agrò river had endangered this structure, which had also been sacked by the Arabs, it was decided to secure it, it was completely dismantled, and then rebuilt, on the opposite side and further up from the river bed); the feast then took place when Roger II, called the Norman, granted the abbot Cerasino the possibility of rebuilding this abbey (diploma of donation of 1117), but not only ... the monks of this abbey were, again by Roger II, equipped with some fixed income, and even the complete ownership of an entire village, the current Forza D'Agrò, was given to them, with absolute power of the monks over the things and people of the village. Then, the Sacred Oils were brought from this Abbey to the church of San Michele Arcangelo (today a ruin) which is located in a district of Forza D'Agrò, with the population who used to adorn themselves for this procession with colored silk ribbons, to which over time, laurel branches were added, also carried by devotees in procession. The festival is essentially based on three strongly symbolic elements, the laurel, the Holy Oil, and the "cuddure". "The laurel" represents the "victory of Christ over Death", in fact the festival takes place on the "Day of the Angel, during the Easter period", a day that recalls that the Resurrection of Christ took place; laurel is a strongly symbolic and fragrant plant, it is used in this context, for elaborate compositions that adorn "the banners", they can be small because they are made by children, up to very large and high (difficult to hold up when there is wind due to the strong "sail effect" they cause), are made with load-bearing structures made of cane or wood, which serve to hold the fabrics on which they are sewn one by one, laurel leaves, creating drawings of a religious nature, banners that participate in a competition for the best realization (each banner in fact carries a number, as a reference for the voting jury); "Holy Oil", an element used for anointing the sick and invoking their healing, represents "redemption from sin" and "spiritual healing", is carried in procession, also a symbol of the Holy Spirit who embraces the body and soul of man and that refers to Christ, "the Anointed"; finally "the cuddure" (they are small circular loaves, with naturally leavened intertwined and dough, on which a symbol is imprinted), and they symbolize "prosperity", but also "charity", and that is why the brothers of the SS. Trinity distribute them to the people present at the feast as a sign of gift. This year, however, due to the restrictions of Covid-19, the "cuddure" did not take place, the "blessing of the Holy Oils" was performed in the Mother Church, and not in the characteristic square in the center of the town , while the procession was made along a short route, and not along the traditional route which, after having crossed the center of the town, then circumscribes it along its entire periphery. As explained above, this festival is also called "'a festa d'u d'auru" (the laurel feast), or "' the feast of cudduredde" (the feast of small donut-shaped loaves); the "banners awarding" will close this characteristic feast, to the great joy of all those who participated.

.........................................................................................

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of the Italian town “Sant’Andrea Apostolo dello Jonio” in Calabria (southern Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");

... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the sea to swim; I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...

I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

----------------------------------------------------

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge del paese di “Sant’Andrea Apostolo dello Jonio” in Calabria (Catanzaro); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);

So - went on a hefty round trip to try and get a sunset and...... nothing..... but did some long exposure stuff and got a few nice enough shots! This was taken with Sony A7R and Nikon 16-35mm f4 with a manual adapter. Must do a test against the D4 and see what difference it makes.

Thanks for all the kind comments and faves - explored at number 110!

2020-21: May 2020: reviewed by Rick LePage of On1 software in Photo Critique:' I like the color in this quite a bit, and it is a nice, pleasing photo overall. I agree with some of Norry’s comments, although I’d love to see this with the camera (or the shooter) moved/pointed a bit more to the left, maybe to lose the two cacti on the right, and get more of the mountains.' Norry Cutler's comment: 'The sky and the cacti have strong visual weight, much less the mountains. A tighter crop to exclude a large part of the sky and so to bring into attention the cacti set against the distant Ajo mountains, now brought near by the crop: making the cacti and the mountains the visual objects that capture attention of the eyes, to create a pleasing interesting image for me.'. Placed crowd 1st and judge10th out of 141 entries in Photocrowd 'Saguaro Cactus' competition in July 2021

Many thanks for views, faves and commends dear friends.

Beach holidays were born in the 1700s in Great Britain, this social phenomenon was born in which bathers for the first time go to the beaches, certainly not as sunny as those bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, they are fully dressed; this "new fashion" is also encouraged by the belief of English doctors since the beginning of the eighteenth century (starting around 1720), that breathing the brackish sea air and bathing in cold sea water is healthy, invigorates the body and cure lung diseases (conviction even more strengthened by the discovery of oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier in 1778, which led to the greater diffusion and conviction of the theories on the health benefits of sea air, which was thought to be more oxygenated and pure), these theories push many people from Northern Europe suffering from severe lung diseases to spend long periods in southern Europe, often in the south of Italy, this explains why characters with extraordinary qualities come to Taormina to cure their tuberculosis. The photographer baron Wilhelm von Gloeden and the English lady Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan had the seawater brought with their mules from Isola Bella, but while W. Von Gloeden heated the sea water, the English noblewoman Lady Trevelian did not heat it, mindful of the teachings of the English medical school, this will cause her death from bronchopneumonia on 4 October 1907 (see my previous "photographic stories" about Taormina). In fact, "thalassotherapy" was born in Great Britain, together with the social and cultural phenomenon of frequenting bathing beaches (before the beginning of the 18th century, the sea and its beaches were lived, except for reasons of trade and fishing, in a dark and negative way, from the sea often came very serious dangers such as the sudden landings of ferocious pirates, or foreigners carrying very serious diseases could land). Thus the fashion of spending holidays by the sea was born in the English aristocracy and high bourgeoisie of the time, subsequently the habit of going to the sea spread to all levels of society, the railways that were built throughout Great Britain to 'beginning of the nineteenth century, made travel to the ocean accessible even to the lower classes, they too will frequent the seaside resorts, Blackpool becomes the first seaside resort in Great Britain completely frequented by the working classes thanks to the presence of low-cost bathing establishments; the great and definitive boom in seaside tourism will then take place in the 1950s and 1960s. This being the case, it should not be surprising to know that in Great Britain the beaches are more frequented than one might instinctively think due to a climate very different from the Mediterranean one, and that this socio-cultural phenomenon has been investigated at the photographic by photographers of the same Great Britain, of these I mention four names. An important photographer, who probably inspired subsequent photographers, was Tony Ray-Jones, who died prematurely in 1972, at the young age of 30, who was trying to create a “photographic memory” of the stereotypes of the English people; the famous photojournalist Martin Parr, who, although inspired by the previous one, differs from it for his way of doing “social satire” with his goal; finally, I would like to mention David Hurn and Simon Roberts, the latter with wider-ranging photographs, with photographs more detached from the individual. In Italy there are numerous photographers (I will mention only a few) who have made in their long career images captured in seaside resorts (generally we speaking of "beach photography" similar to "street photography"), photographs that are often unique in their style, such as that adopted by Franco Fontana, I mention Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (of whom I am honored to have known him personally), and Massimo Vitali, famous photographer (understood by some as "the photographer of the beaches"), especially for his beautiful photographs taken on the beaches (but not only), thanks to the presence of elevated fixed structures as a kind of mezzanine, built specifically in the bathing beaches for the realization of his photographs. This is my incipit, to introduce the theme I tackled, that of "beach photography", with a series of photographs taken on the beaches of Eastern Sicily, most of which are located near Taormina.

……………………………………………………………

The image positively glows, and you have done especially well to capture the depth of the scene; we get a real sense of foreground, middle distance and background even with the same subject matter filling the frame. The balance of exposure really allows the form and texture of the spiky rocks to be revealed, perfectly describing the rocky subject. It is great that you have managed to include the trees, as these help give a sense of scale, and the green provides a contrast to the pinky orange. I'm delighted to say that this image was 'Commended' in the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2011 (LPOTY 2011) competition and also featured in the Sunday Times magazine in the results section on 23rd October 2011. Blog article on LPOTY

Not what I was looking to capture when I got up at the [for me] utterly ludicrous hour of 0300 to be here for dawn. Rather, the composition is approximately what I was aiming for, but the forecast had said MIST. Obviously, there is no mist here, just 'murk' in the distance across the Lakeland fells. There was also a surprisingly hard frost up on the tops, which is what's causing the bright areas as it catches some reflected light from the just-risen Sun.

The Howgill Fells are beautifully smoothed, rolling hills to the east of the Lake District and partially within the Yorkshire Dales national park (despite being wholly in Cumbria). Importantly, they're really easy to walk up in the dark. I shall be heading up to this point - which is pretty much the centre of the small range - again, I hope; at some point when there really IS some mist!

Ha! I just noticed that in the original of this I can see a lorry on the M6 - amusing somehow. The motorway runs across the frame in the flat area between the Howgill Fells and the Lake District.

Flat Lick Falls

A stop to Flat Lick Falls caught me a bit off guard a few month ago as when we went to the overlook you could actually see the falls unimpeded! Apparently one small tree was cut from the overlook and it was all that was needed to open up a beautiful scene! Located in Jackson County, Kentucky, I can't commend the county enough on how wonderful of a job they've done making this a wonderful park, which I'll point out more on an upcoming post from here which will be from the base of the falls!

A large puddle formed on the path near the storm drain after the more than 2 inch rain. It was alive with warblers, thrushes and sparrows. The warblers and thrushes were all being very successful at finding and eating small worms which look like baby earthworms that they found in the wet leaves in and around the water.
