I must be gone for a while. Stay well. Stay safe.
I took this picture in a gorgeous ELVION months ago. It was a night scene and, although I quite liked the composition, I wasn't very happy with the mood and it didn't really connect with anything that I wanted to explain. That is, until I had a clear idea of how to edit it. I transformed the cold dark tones of night into warm tones of a turbulent, post-apocalyptic dusk, when almost all hope is lost, one part of me feeling exactly like that. But at the very same time, another part of me would be represented by the horse grazing peacefully in the meadow, indifferent to the ominous sky threatening to fall over everybody's heads, perhaps because the plumed seeds of the dandelion were already commended with the wish for good things to happen. A wish that will never die.
(The beautiful cloud texture, dans les nuages, is by Lypho.)
Commended in this years Landscape Photographer of the Year competition and will feature in the accompanying exhibition and book.
This image was commended in the small world category of the Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition and will appear in the 2017 book. See link below.

British Wildlife Photography Awards - at last we are allowed to talk about the results. My fungi pic made it through to highly commended - the only 1 of 8 acceptances to final appraisal. 13,000 entries this year so to have a survivor is a good result.
#1 - Commended in the 2013 Welsh International Salon. One of 2 commended images and ten acceptances across the open, nature and travel categories. This was my first attempt at an international exhibition, so I'm pleased to have gained 10 acceptances (from 12 entries).
# 2 - Accepted into Taiwan's International Taichung Exhibition 2013, accredited by FIAP
Looking east over East River.... Manhattan Bridge on the left, Brooklyn Bridge on the right
Shot days after my tripod tipped over in exactly the same spot with a D4, Nikon 14-24 and Lee SW150 Filter system with a ND 0.9 grad filter.... Heart stopping moment!! Luckily, the only thing that broke was the filter ( sadly, this is a regular occurrence for me ).... Smashed to pieces. Scoured New York for a Lee stockist to replace the grad filter - contacted 7 outlets who claimed to be a 'stockist' but for the most part actually only really took orders. Step up The Filter Connection in New Hampshire who didn't have one in stock but that wasn't stopping Adriana (at least I think that was her name)... They got on the phone to Lee in the US and tracked down a SW150 0.75 ND Filter (2.5 stops) and it was shipped to me in New York overnight. I didn't even knew Lee produced a 2.5 stop in the SW150 format (in fact, I still don't think it's available in the UK) and it's completely filled a 'need' for me. There are mornings/evenings when a 3 stop graduation is a bit too much and 0.6 ND (2 stop) just doesn't give you enough - and this fits perfectly between the two - so what began as a disaster actually had a lucky twist in the end :)... The shot above was the first outing with the new filter..... A return to the scene of the crime as it were
Quite pleased to have this image, commended in the 2018, Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, it's featured in the 2018 LPOTY book, and exhibition, held at Waterloo Station in November.
The standard has gone through the roof in recent years, quite worried how the above stands up!, Well done and congrats to anyone who was successful this year. X

So here is my black and white re-edit of the 2019 Palais Theatre RAW file. Two things commended monochrome to me here. The first is the fact that the image was always sharp as a tack (you can easily read the enlarged signs on the theatre entrance). That wasn't the problem, colour was and it is why I now need a compelling reason to process a night shot in colour (the reverse of daytime photographs).
The second issue is that black and white to some degree can mask some of those artefacts I talked about in the "Just for fun" re-edit. That "fake" looking palm tree on the left (in the colour version) doesn't look so bad in black and white.
Finally, although I am nowhere near as satisfied with the outcome of this monochrome as "The National Theatre" I posted yesterday (there are just too many problems to solve in this RAW image), my own preference is for the monochrome version over the colour re-edit.
One of the photographs which changed my whole outlook on black and white night photography is this wonderful photograph from Hollywood in 1949 by Max Yavno, "Premiere at Carthey Circle, LA". It is in the Peter Fetterman collection and can be seen on the cover of his superb book, The Power of Photography (ACC Art Books, 2022). www.peterfetterman.com/artists/30-max-yavno/works/57953-m...
One of those rare moments when it all comes together. The forecast was for a cold, clear morning, so the snow and clouds were a complete surprise and bonus. I waited on the fell until the sun broke through, lighting up patches of the valley floor through breaks in the clouds. It didn't take long for the snow to melt and I was treated to a careful decent under a warm blue sky.
This image received a commended award in the 2016 Take A View Landscape Photographer of the Year awards

Glorious early morning sidelight on a field of Opium Poppies, growing in the Dorset countryside. A 1:45am alarm call seemed crazy, but I sure am glad I went out.

Sorry for being a bit quiet folks, I've had some issues with my pro account and couldn't upload any photos for a while... I'm now back up and running and I have some news!!!
As some of you know I entered this year's Landscape Photographer of The Year competition for the first time. I knew I had no chance of winning as the standard is always way above my paygrade but after entering a mixture of landscape and urban architecture shots I hoped for the best.
After having three of my urban shots getting shortlisted, then having one through to final judging I was pretty shocked, then on Thursday I had an email to say I had my abstract shot from One Poultry in London commended by the judges and I've won a place in the awards book (out this week) and a place in the exhibition at London Bridge train station (so if you're near there go visit, it's on until February!)
I'm still a bit dumbfounded but chuffed to bits to get as far as I have, god knows how the winner is feeling lol!!! It's something that every landscape photographer hopes to achieve and I'm glad I've managed that on my first attempt.
You can see all the winners over at their main page here and then wonder how the hell I managed to get through cos they're all way better than mine haha!!
this image of the buttermere pines from the start of the year has managed to make it into the landscape photographer of the year awards book and has been commended by the judges.
pleased is an understatement.
Really pleased to say two of my pictures received awards in this years Landscape Photographer of the Year 2016.
This picture, Binnien Beag was highly commended and also went on to win the Charlie Waite Judges Choice award so very pleased with that result.
My other picture can be seen in my subsequent upload.
Many congratulations to all my Flickr friends who also made the book.

Awarded a Highly Commended award at 2022 Royal Queensland Show - Photographic Arts - Digital Portraits
Very excited to have had this image Highly Commended in the "Hidden Britain" category of the 2017 British Wildlife Photography Awards.
The shot was taken in our Staffordshire garden in May this year. It shows a Nomada cuckoo-bee holding-on with it mandibles whilst roosting.
I'm off to London next week for the Awards evening. It will be great seeing all the other entries and to meet some of the photographers.
