The edge of a Poppy field in Wiltshire. I really enjoyed the way the light was striking the fields in the mid ground, and the 3 distinct colour lines in this image. I'm glad I decided to turn around, rather than focussing purely on the mass of poppies that are behind me in this image.

Pleased to announce this image has been commended in International Garden Photographer of the Year!

After the Cherry Blossom Parade in downtown DC, I highly commend the Japanese Street Festival along Pennsylvania Avenue. The best part for me, connecting with my friend,

Toshio. The weather was amazing and the streets were packed, but we had a good time.

From the website:

The Sakura Matsuri - Japanese Street Festival is the largest one-day exhibition of Japanese culture in the United States.

Japanese food and beer, sake, music and dance, arts and crafts, anime and manga, taiko drums, samurai swordsmen, ikebana and bonsai, karate, judo, sumo, aikido, sudoku. No matter what, if it’s Japanese, it’s at the Sakura Matsuri.

In the second image, I like the giant inflatable dog obeying the one way sign.

I guess I should mention: this was taken during the Parade, not the street festival!

This has been highly commended in the Take a View, Landscape Photographer of the Year competition 2012

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;

I made photos related to "street photography";

I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, performing their portraits, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;

The volcano Etna, in recent days has shown an intense eruptive activity, even with intense phenomena called "lava fountains", continuous jet emissions persisted intensely for many minutes, of very high "fountains" of incandescent magma, very spectacular and uncommon, in particular, which took place on 23-02 at night, it reached exceptional dimensions and heights; I photographed that spectacular eruptions using a telephoto lens, from Taormina; I photographed Jakub Rizman, an excellent harp player, who spread sweet notes throughout the main square of Taormina, creating a fairytale atmosphere (on YouTube I found some musical performances of him);

these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.

………………………………………………………

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina;

ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;

ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo incontrato prima, eseguendo dei loro ritratti, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;

il vulcano Etna, nei giorni scorsi ha mostrato una intensa attività eruttiva, anche con intensi fenomeni chiamati "fontane di lava", emissioni a getto continuo perdurate intensamente per molti minuti, di altissime "fontane" di magma incandescente, molto spettacolari e non comuni, una in particolare, avvenuta il 23-02 di notte, ha raggiunto dimensioni e altezze eccezionali; ho fotografato da Taormina quelle spettacolari eruzioni, usando un teleobiettivo; ho fotografato Jakub Rizman, un eccellente suonatore d'arpa, che ha diffuso dolcissime note per tutta la piazza principale di Taormina, creando un'atmosfera da favola (su YouTube ho trovato alcune sue esibizioni musicali);

Delighted to get a couple of images in the LPOTY 2015 book, of which this is one.

Shingle Street in Suffolk again. Taken a couple of minutes after the previous shot, and the last one I got before the heavens opened.

This shot got a commendation in the Landscape photographer of the year competition. I am pleased with that. The winning shot was a cracker by Emmanuel Coupe of the Old Man of Storr.

Taken on an excellent workshop to Italy organised by Rohan Reilly. Image was Highly Commended at a recent club competition.

Very proud to say that this image, taken during Storm Eunice, has been Commended in the World Landscape Photographer of the Year 2022.

Bit of a repost, but I'm completely stoked to have this image commended in the 2015 Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

Last year I didn't even make the shortlist, and it was my goal to get on the shortlist this year, however to go one step further and have an image commended really tops off a great year for me professionally.

Thanks so much to everyone who has supported my work, it's been invaluable, and huge congrats to all the other photographers who were successful!

I'm in my element up here, like a piggy in muck!

This image is from the 4th day of our roadtrip, it was a beautiful still misty morning so we headed to Castle Kilchurn for sunrise.

I'll post more images from my trip soon...

My health company, every three months, for three days, sends me to cover a shortage of staff, in the Lipari hospital, (and so do my colleagues), in the little free time I have available, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion.

Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands (they are located north of Sicily, one hour by hydrofoil from Milazzo); Lipari, under the fascist dictatorship, was the seat of forced confinement for political opponents, it was considered "a Sicilian Alcatraz", among all the islands of confinement, Lipari was most likely the most liveable, both for its considerable size that favored the relations of the confined with the inhabitants, both because, to a greater extent than elsewhere, in Lipari, confined persons were allowed to live in private residences, together with their families or other companions. I found written: "Being on an island that belongs to another island means feeling doubly foreign, tied to the will of the gods and nature, where every certainty can be swept away by the waves of that sea that laps it in every intimate part, but it is a sensation that lasts for a few minutes, the Liparoti (the inhabitants of Lipari, ed) know it well (as all Sicilians know), the Greek concept of Xenia, hospitality, is inherent in them, a written rule, is a duty that provides sanctity and protection for the guest ".

Lipari has a long history as a place of detention. It is the island where the common criminals were initially confined, then with the law of November 6, 1926 (the twenty-year fascist period begins with the seizure of power by fascism and Mussolini, officially occurred on October 31, 1922), Lipari thus became the a place to isolate and confine opponents; the life of the confined began immediately after disembarkation, with lodging in the dormitories of the Castle, under the strict surveillance of the police and the fascist militia, every morning, the confined were subjected to the appeal and they received a daily pay of 10 lire; they could move freely in the town, without however exceeding the demarcation line that surrounded the inhabited center; walking was the main activity, the saddest and most melancholy ones pushed to the limit allowed, to see the ferries arrive from Milazzo, aware that the sea was guarded by motorboats armed with machine guns. A situation that will not prevent Nitti, Rosselli and Lussu from fleeing the island, on a moonless night, between 27 and 28 July 1929.

I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the streets of Lipari ... in search of fleeting moments ...I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

Was nice to be awarded a highly commended portfolio in SLPOTY again this year.

Commended in OPOTY 2016

With over 17,000 images I'm really proud to have got 2 images in final 150 photographs to be included in the annual.

Conditions were perfect this morning for this shot at Shoalstone. Little bit of sea mist made it easy to process, nice big tide and some lovely soft light. Decided to keep this one in colour, although a mono version might appear at some point!

Take a View - Landscape Photographer of the Year, is an annual landscape photography competition run in the UK which invites entries showing UK landscapes only.

I don't enter photographic competitions in general, this is one of the very few I do enter, and dare I say it, I would suggest it is possibly seen as one, if not the, premier landscape photography competition in the UK.

I didn't win a prize but I have made it into the book for 2011 as one of the commended entries with this shot.

:o)

This is a shot across the frozen surface of Loch Naver, near Altnaharra, Sutherland, Scotland, during the recent very cold weather. Again this is thick frost and not snow that is covering everything. The low sun is coming from the right hand side into this shot and was just catching the top branches of the tree, and part of the far bank of trees.

Made highest position of #1 in Explore, many thanks for all the comments and faves, your support is much appreciated :o)

Many thanks for views, faves and commends dear friends

There's quite a few fields around home that grow grass/turf for Rolawn etc. This field in particular is in Everingham, near Pocklington. I dismissed this shot when I got home, I thought it would be better when the tree was in leaf and the sun was a little higher. I've just come back to this shot and on reflection I think I like it!

Good news was that I got High Commended at the local photographic society last light with this Panel of Three. There was some fierce competition so I was please to come away with a result - aiming for a placing next year - hmmm

Absolutely stunned, delighted, and bowled over to be commended in OPOTY 2018 for the View From Above category. Having seen the initial shortlist (for which I got nine entries in) and the jaw dropping quality of work in that, let alone the amazing images in the final cut, I am a very, very, very happy bunny.

Highly Commended - Stourbridge Photographic Society - Mono Prints - 13/9/18

I’m thrilled to announce that after having an image shortlisted, it has gone on to be commended by the judges and has won a place in the awards book! My image 'Stormy Seas at Porthcawl' will also be on display at the exhibition at Waterloo Station in London from 19th November 2018 until the 3rd February 2019.

I have been entering this competition for a few years and my dream was never to win the competition; I have always just wanted to be in the book. Well now my dream has come true! The book - Landscape Photographer of the Year : Collection 12, is published on October the 15th. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

I highly recommend viewing the winning images from Landscape Photographer of the Year 2018 whether you can find them online or via the book itself - you really won't be disappointed! Well done to all those other photographers who were shortlisted or made the book and if you didn't, then keep on going! I've looked back at some previous entries and am shocked I even entered them but as with photography, you improve and once there's something that catches the judges eye with emotion and a story then that's it.... as with this image; I finally did it!

This image is available as a print through my website.

Thank you all for the love and support I continue to receive, it means the world to me! Needless to say I'm on a massive high at the moment!

I have been fortunate enough to have this image of Stoer Head Lighthouse 'commended' in the seascapes category of Scottish Landscape Photographer Of The Year 2016, the bonus is, it will appear in the printed version of the book.

The image was taken back in April while we were searching frantically for a sunrise shot. A passing squall gave us a soaking but provided a stunning backdrop for the scene.

Very pleased to report this shot has been commended in this year's competition.

I must say I was surprised to see it shortlisted as it's not of my usual style, but none the less happy as it's of my home coastline.

Thanks to Jake Turner who suggested I should submit it, as I would never have done so myself.

Burney overlooks the busy A5092 opposite the vast Kirkby slate quarries. On both flanks are scanty remains of antiquities, the rougher west side also having traces of old workings, but in general Burney is featureless, a grassy mound with little to commend it, but redeemed by a superb view that ranges from far out in the Irish sea to the Yorkshire Pennines and includes most of the southern half of Lakeland.

This iconic ruin stands prominently on the skyline of a desolate moorland. It was built to serve as refuge for travellers crossing the high ground of the Moine, in the very northern part of Sutherland.

Very lucky to receive a commended in the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2015 (LPOTY)

Taken last December with lots of mist about, just after sunrise looking at Derwent Isle on Derwent Water. I went for the long exposure to smooth out the mist and water. Adding to the ethereal effect.

Last month I was Highly Commended in the Travel Photographer Of The Year Awards for a series of images that I shot in Algeria.

This is the fourth image from that series. The first image is here, as well as some background info.

The Sahara is constantly changing - the sand goes where the wind goes. As a result, the dunes are always on the move. In some areas entire rock formations have been swallowed by the sand, in others you can still witness this happening - like in this shot. The guy on top of the arch is one of our crew.

Anyway, this image was highly commended in the British Life Photography Awards, and I attended to preview of the exhibition last night so was able to see it hanging proudly on the wall. Great feeling. One of the first competitions I've entered, so it feels super good to receive some recognition amongst the 5000 entries.
