Class 31 D5631 stands at Sheringham on the North Norfolk Railway, prior to departure with the 1500 Sheringham to Holt - 21/07/2022.

We had a rather eventful, but nevertheless enjoyable day on the North Norfolk Railway.

Originally, I didn't think we would be able to come here as Lorraine had planned to meet friends near Ely. However, they jumped at the chance to visit the North Norfolk Railway when we suggested we meet here instead.

Therefore, I was really looking forward to a day travelling behind this lovely locomotive & the visiting Class 25 D7659. We parked at Holt & decided to change trains at Weybourne to catch the Class 25 back to Holt. However, when we alighted to change trains at Weybourne, we were told the 'Rat' had a problem & would not be running today. Therefore, we decided to jump back on & continue through to Sheringham.

We then had a run to Weybourne & back on this loco hauled train & the replacement Class 101 DMU, before stopping at Sheringham for lunch.

We caught the DMU to Weybourne, before we returned to Sheringham behind the Class 31. We decided to take this train back to Holt & call it a day. However, there was one final catch. On arrival at Weybourne, we were told the Class 101 DMU had failed at Holt & the crew were trying to get it running again & then limp the stricken train back to Weybourne. The crew did indeed eventually get the DMU going again & it made it back to Weybourne, so we could finally get back to Holt.

It was a shame about the 'Rat', as it was my last chance to see it in action before it returned to Derbyshire, but these things happen with heritage traction & despite the fun & games, we all really enjoyed the day.

A southbound London Overground class 378 unit comes out of a tunnel into an essentially white scene at Wapping station on the East London Line.

As well as the white wall on the right, there is a fair sprinkling of white grit salt on the narrow platform. This is applied because although the stretch of the line between Surrey Quays and Whitechapel is below ground (and of course the River Thames), a small part of the northen end of the platform is exposed to the weather. This shot was taken on the last day of a week long cold snap across the British Isles.

Class 67 67024 continues to operate in less than pristine external condition but has at least had a partial clean of the most important part of the locomotive - the number! - and was pictured in the 'Thunderbird' siding at Newcastle Central on January 16th 2017.

Although the planned withdrawal of the 'Castle Class 255' 4+2 HSTs on timetabled services was to be by the end of 2023, this was subsequently revised, enabling a small number of sets to continue in use on GWR diagrams into 2024. On 22nd September 2023 just one class 1 diagram remained, the 1G77 15:50 Penzance to Bristol Temple Meads, with 43155 'Rougement Castle' (with 43153 'Chûn Castle powering on the rear) rolls into Taunton shortly after sunset. 43155 (with 43154) was acquired by West Coast Railway Company and moved to Carnforth on 31st July 2025.

My first Flickr upload and the start of my entry to this years Octrainber.

When I first heard the subject for this years competition one loco immediately sprung to mind, the Class 08. I had this on my list of locos to design but had prioritised the Faster locomotives of the East Coast Mainline.

I have fond memories of running an OO Gauge Class 08 in British Rail blue around my bedroom as a kid and often saw one at my local train station (Ipswich).

The model is using ML (#8) wheels and is powered by a medium PU motor reduced 12:20 to give it prototypical running speed and PU battery box. Building the Class 08 in Dark Blue presented it difficulties, especially with the lack of plates/tiles with clips, but I think it has come out well.

The station building looks rather black, still smoke stained by environmental issues of the day and long gone steam trains. Thankfully its a little brighter now and platform three is back in use. At this time I knew most of the station staff sadly now all passed away Seth, Perksy (Alan Perks) and Gail Simpson {nee Morley} bless R.I.P. This was back in the day when the station staff white washed the platform edge and seen out the Holyhead's on platform 4 with a lamp. The Gasometer has long since gone just like the 40.

The Class 380 Desiro is a type of electric multiple-unit train that operates on the national railway network in Scotland.

The Siemens "Desiro UK" family also includes units of 185, 350, 360, 444 and 450.

The trains operate Abellio ScotRail services in the Ayrshire and Inverclyde region of Scotland and had originally been intended for the cancelled Glasgow Airport Rail Link. The construction was awarded to Siemens and announced by Transport Scotland on 11 July 2008.

A total of 38 sets were ordered, comprising 22 three-car and 16 four-car units. Stations along the Ayrshire Coast Line and Inverclyde Line underwent platform extension works to allow the use of the longer trains. The trains were specified to have full access for disabled people and to have streamlined end corridor connections. On the unveiling of the first completed vehicle, it was announced that the fleet would be divided into two sub-groups, with the 3-car units Class 380/0 and the 4-car as Class 380/1.

In September 2010, commissioning of the fleet was suspended by ScotRail due to technical issues with the trains. The reliability issues and extended commissioning period resulted in an initially reduced service on parts of the ScotRail network, including the newly re-opened Airdrie-Bathgate line.

The fleet is based at Glasgow Shields Road TMD. Introduction of the fleet resulted in the cascading of the Class 334 "Juniper" and Class 318 fleet which previously operated the Ayrshire Coast Line and Inverclyde Line. The North Berwick Line operations was a Class 322 fleet replacement. The Class 334 "Juniper" stock were cascaded onto the North Clyde Line to Edinburgh Waverley, the Class 318s were cascaded onto the Argyle Line, and Class 322 cascaded onto the Wakefield Line with Northern Rail.

The fleet was introduced into public service on 8 December 2010 with 380111 operated the 16:26 from Paisley Gilmour Street to Ayr, followed on 9 December 2010 by 380102 and 380001 which worked the 15:30 Glasgow Central to Ayr service.

The North Berwick Line has been using these trains since 2011.

From 21 November 2012, the Class 380 are also seen operating the Paisley Canal Line. Electrification of the section of line from Corkerhill to Paisley Canal, to a plan devised by a ScotRail and Network Rail alliance, began in July 2012 and was completed in November 2012. The electrification works were undertaken during night time and weekend possessions, resulting in the route closing after 8pm on Monday to Thursday evenings, all day on Saturdays, and for an eight-day period in October, with work starting on 29 September 2012 and intending to be completed by 8 November 2012. Class 314 and Class 380 "Desiro" electric multiple units supplemented the existing Class 156 "Super Sprinter" diesel multiple units from energisation of the wires in November 2012. From the timetable change in December 2012, the Class 156 "Super Sprinter" were moved to other routes.

Following the December 2014 timetable change, with the electrification of the Whifflet Line, services to Lanark were re-routed into Glasgow Central High Level. Alongside the usual Class 318's and Class 320's, the Class 380s have often been used on the route.

Class 380s were due to operate some services on the newly electrified line between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley via Falkirk, but this has yet to commence amid suggestions that the electrification of the line was running 6 months late.

LateNight at Barnetby Hitting -3 well worth it for some of the traffic coming through.

In September 1976 Class 40, 40044 ran away whilst working the 7Z20 stone train from Peak Forest to Whitemoor Yard. The train was derailed and the following 12 loaded wagons ploughed into the rear cab. it was thought the locomotive might have to be cut up on site but it was later removed to Crewe Works, in a surprise move the locomotive was repaired, not emerging until March 1980. It continued in traffic until January 1985. The accident occured at Chinley and was photographed shortly after being rerailed.

Another from my late father's collection. The Driver training was undertaken on the now closed Bedford-Northampton line. The Loco would collect any spare set of coaching stock on hand at Cricklewood, normally six coaches. The train would be worked onto the Bedford-Northampton line and two round trips done with a lunch break at Olney. The train would be stabled in the goods yard there. The train would run round at Northampton Bridge Street and Bedford South Sidings. The train would return to Cricklewood later in the day.

I have since done a bit of detective work and have found that the Lunch stop was made at Turvey, not Olney. A group picture was taken in the front garden of the former 'Railway Swan' Public House at the bottom of Station Road Turvey, and thanks to Google Maps I have been able to positively identify the location now.
