The class 504 Manchester - Bury units were unique in that they operated on a 1200 V dc side-contact third rail system. The line is now part of Manchester Metrolink but for 35-odd years, the 504s faithfully bounced their way between Manchester and Bury, hardly noticed by anyone - until they were gone.
