I spotted this tight, sparse fairy ring on the way to class next to stokes on October 4th, 2019. The mycelium of Marasmius ordeades grows underground in a circle, collecting nutrients from the soil that would have otherwise been used by the grass. This is why dead grass follows along the rim of the ring, they are being deprived of nutrients. The mycelium of these fungis' secrete chemicals to break down the soil to have more available nutrients. Grass along this outer rim thrive in this more nutrient rich environment until the fungi's mycelium expands the ring, at a rate of up to eight inches per year, and absorb the nutrients for itself, starving the grass. The fungi out competes the grass in the fight for nutrients. The central part of the mycelium eventually will die off when resources are exhausted, causing them to decompose and return their stolen nutrients to the soil

The class 504 Manchester - Bury units were unique in that they operated on a 1200 V dc side-contact third rail system. The line is now part of Manchester Metrolink but for 35-odd years, the 504s faithfully bounced their way between Manchester and Bury, hardly noticed by anyone - until they were gone. Here a set leaves Manchester Victoria on 8 May 1987.
