The National Monument was designed by Charles Cockerell and William Playfair, who were inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. It was intended to commemorate
Scottish servicemen who died in the Napoleonic War, and funds for its construction were raised by a public appeal. Work started in August 1822, but only the twelve columns we see today were ever completed.

It's been a few weeks between posts, something of a combination of lots of work, a dose of the 'flu and a general lack of effort on my behalf. So last week, visiting Melbourne for work, I made sure to get out and try to find some images in my spare time.
Waking on the first morning I looked out from the window of my hotel room to an amazing sunrise, the sky ablaze with early morning colour. I quickly gathered my gear and headed to the riverside. Alas, the glorious part of the sunrise was over by the time I arrived. Not to worry I thought, there's another couple of mornings to go...
So faithfully I rose early each day, hoping to catch a sunrise but not finding another like the first day this time. This is from the last morning, looking back at the city skyline across the Yarra River. It was great to get back out and I really enjoyed some time on the streets, shooting whatever I could see.

The City Hall in Delft (1618) is a Renaissance style building on the Markt across from the Nieuwe Kerk. It is the former seat of the city's government, and still today the place where residents hold their civic wedding ceremonies. Originally designed by the Dutch architect Hendrick de Keyser, it was heavily changed over the centuries and was restored in the 20th century to its Renaissance appearance.
Osaka is the third largest city in Japan, about 2.5 hours by bullet train from Tokyo. Although it's not high on the tourist circuit for international visitors with a limited timeframe, it is famous for its food, and this area called Dotonburi is full of good quality restaurants and bars.
The canal dates back to 1615, when the local "Doton" family built it to connect two rivers, to improve trade flows in the local area. "Buri" means canal. Within a decade it began to attract theatres and entertainment within the region, which was quite prosperous. This continues to today, as the local district is easily accessible within an hour commute by multiple train lines from large cities like Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe.
From evening to the early morning hours, Dontonburi is party central. In the early morning after sunrise, it takes on an almost surreal atmosphere - revellers have made their way home on the first commuter trains that whisk them back to the suburbs from around 5am. As I woke up early after a long flight Australia, it was a great opportunity to capture a busy part of the city with very few people. I was amazed by the mirror like reflections of the canal as the sun gently rose over the city - the silence was amazing after experiencing the chaos of late night partying.
Another shot with the 10-22 lens from the UN secretariat building. I must go again during a nice sunset this spring/summer

Here in these deep city lights
Girl could get lost tonight
I'm finding every reason to be gone
There's nothing here to hold on to
Could i hold you?
Calling out somebody save me i feel like i'm fading away
Am i gone?
Calling out somebody save me i feel like i'm fading
