Gold was discovered in Gregory Gulch in 1859. Within one year, 10,000 people arrived in the area. Central City became known as "The richest square mile on earth". Today, Central City is an interesting mining town to explore. Much more historic than neighboring Blackhawk, which has been overrun with fancy casinos.

Last 07.12.14 was this year's City of Water Day. In the morning I was on board the Circle Line 'Brooklyn' for the special eco-cruise sponsored by NYC Audubon exploring the natural history of the area past Hoffman and Swinburne Islands in the New York harbor. The islands are crucial breeding grounds for NYC's waterbirds.
We boarded 'Brooklyn' at Pier 83 and cruised along the New York harbor until we saw the islands at a distance. The eco-cruise ended at the Yankee Pier in Governors Island.
