The name "Amman" comes from "Rabbath Ammon," or "Great City of the Ammonites," who settled in the region some time after 1200 BC. The Bible records that King David captured the city in the early 10th century BC; Uriah the Hittite, husband of King David's paramour Bathsheba, was killed here after the king ordered him to the front line of battle.

In de 17de eeuw werd Zoutleeuw herschapen in een zwaar versterkte stad om de Spaanse Nederlanden te beschermen tegen Franse en Hollandse aanvallen. De militaire ingenieur Antoine van Marck begon in 1667 met de stadsmuren die niet onderhouden waren, te versterken en de woonkern werd verkleind. In 1671 werden deze verdedigingswerken uitgebreid met een citadel in het zuiden van de stad buiten de muren. Hiervoor werd het hoger gelegen gehucht Ophem en het Scholierenklooster onteigend. De Spanjaarden bouwden een vierkante gebastioneerde citadel, omringd door een brede droge gracht. Kort na 1700 werd de citadel nog aangepast, waardoor ze een onregelmatige vorm kreeg. In 1705 kwam Zoutleeuw onder het bewind van de 'Verenigde Provinciën'. De vesting werd na de vrede van Utrecht (1713) ontruimd.
De citadel werd in het midden van de 18de eeuw verlaten en geraakte hierdoor in verval. Op bevel van de Oostenrijkse bewind werden alle vestingen verkocht voor afbraak. In de 19de eeuw werd de spoorweg dwars door de citadel aangelegd. Ook de aanleg van de weg naar Dormaal en het voetbalveld hebben tastten de 'Bolwerken’ verder aan. Alleen langs de zijde van de Koepoortstraat zijn de glooiingen in het terrein nog een getuige van de Spaanse citadel. De citadel werd beschermd als dorpsgezicht in 1987. Het is nu een landschappelijk waardevol gebied op het kruispunt van het stadslandschap Zoutleeuw en het natuurlandschap de Kleine Gete.

Jabal al-Qal'a, also called Amman Citadel is a national historic site at the center of downtown Amman, Jordan. Known in Arabic as Jabal al-Qal'a, the L-shaped hill is one of the seven jabals that originally made up Amman. Evidence of occupation since the pottery Neolithic period has been found, making it among the world's oldest continuously inhabited places. Settlement at the Citadel extends over 7,000 years. The site represents a passage in time with an astounding open-air museum to explore as a part of the heritage of mankind. The site has Biblical references, is associated with iconic deities, was besieged by wars, ruled by celebrated leaders, crushed by earthquakes and home to profoundly different cultures. The Amman Citadel is also the site of the first national Archaeological Museum.
Most of the citadel was erected by the Ayyubids in the C12th – C13th but was added to by the Ottomans in the C16th. Sadly a missile attack in 2012 damaged the gate and destroyed the iron doors which dated from 1211.

The Citadel, an old fortress, which is of a tourist attracton in Landskrona. It was begun in the 1540s and completed in 1560, when this part of Sweden was part of Denmark.
Banteay Srei is a 10th century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva located near the hill of Phnom Dei, 25 km north-east of the main group of temples.
The temple was rediscovered only in 1914, and was the subject of a celebrated case of art theft when André Malraux stole four devatas in 1923 (he was soon arrested and the figures returned).
