Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 96 at Denver, Colorado on January 17, 1971, duplicate slide by Jerry Appleman, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 96 was built in 1886 by Barney & Smith as Chicago Burlington & Northern B-99. As built it was an all-wood business car with open platforms at both ends. In 1895 it was renumbered to CB&N 45 and in 1902 it became CB&Q 90. In 1906 it was rebuilt by CB&Q's Aurora Shops becoming CB&Q 96, still an all-wood car but with one observation platform, the other end was occupied by the refrigerator. In 1915 electric lights replaced the Pintsch gas fixtures and in 1917 a steel underframe replaced the wood. Steel sheathing was applied in the 1920's over the original tongue-and-groove siding, cast steel trucks replaced the wood-beam ones, and a shower was added to the main restroom. In the 1930's ice air-conditioning, oil heat and Thermopane windows were added. In 1962 a minor kitchen fire sidelined the car, and it was sold to the Intermountain Chapter of the NRHS. It was used in excursion service until the advent of Amtrak in 1971, when it was moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum for display.
So NS is going to have "heritage" locomotives, why not BNSF? They can start with something like this. Get 'er done BNSF!
Currawongs are three species of medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the genus Strepera in the family Artamidae native to Australia. These are the grey currawong (Strepera versicolor), pied currawong (S. graculina), and black currawong (S. fuliginosa). The common name comes from the call of the familiar pied currawong of eastern Australia and is onomatopoeic. They were formerly known as crow-shrikes or bell-magpies. Despite their resemblance to crows and ravens, they are only distantly related to the corvidae, instead belonging to an Afro-Asian radiation of birds of superfamily Malaconotoidea.

Currawongs sind drei Arten mittelgroßer Singvögel, die zur Gattung Strepera in der in Australien beheimateten Familie Artamidae gehören. Dies sind der graue Currawong (Strepera versicolor), der gescheckte Currawong (S. graculina) und der schwarze Currawong (S. fuliginosa).
Der gebräuchliche Name stammt aus dem Ruf des bekannten gescheckten Currawongs aus Ostaustralien und ist lautmalerisch. Früher waren sie als Krähenwürger oder Glockenelstern bekannt. Trotz ihrer Ähnlichkeit mit Krähen und Raben sind sie mit den Rabenvögeln nur entfernt verwandt, sondern gehören zu einer afro-asiatischen Vogelart der Überfamilie Malaconotoidea.

CB&Q GP20 927 and GP30 971 in Eola, IL on August 27, 1969. 927 was built in 1961 and became BN 2063. 971 was built in 1963 and became BN 2248.
So last week we knocked down the wall into the space next door that used to be an acupuncturist/record store/game designer to DOUBLE the shop. Sooo much space..

Wie das Salzwasser Krokodil entstand (eine Legende aus der Traumzeit)
Die Ureinwohner von Bathurst Island, einer Insel im Norden von Westaustralien, in der Timor Sea, erzählen über die Entstehung des Salzwasser Krokodils eine andere Traumzeit Legende:
In dieser langen und schöpferischen Periode, die viele die Traumzeit nennen, lebte an einer Süßwasserlagune Jirakuipai. Er hatte seine beiden Schwestern Kuraruna und Jaknia geheiratet. Jirakuipai galt als ausgesprochener Experte in der Herstellung von Speeren. Er beherrschte die Kunst der Fertigung von großen mit vielen Widerhaken auf einer Seite versehenen Speeren für die Männer. Und er konnte aber auch die handlichen kleinen Speere für Frauen herstellen. Diese hatten dann gleich eine doppelte Reihe von Widerhaken.
Gerade hatte er die Produktion einer größeren Anzahl von Speeren abgeschlossen, als eine Gruppe Ureinwohner von der Nachbarinsel Melville Island sein Lager stürmte und ihn durch viele Speerstiche in den Rücken schwer verletzte.
Jirakuipai war ein starker Mann. Er zog sich die Speere aus seinen Körper und warf diese, als ein Akt der Vergeltung, nach den Angreifern. Dann rettet er sich, indem er ins Wasser sprang und wegtauchte.
Um einer Gefangennahme zu entgehen verwandelten sich seine beiden Frauen in zwei Vögel. In Reiher. Kuraruna wurde ein Nacht Reiher (Night Heron) und Jaknia ein brauner Reiher (Brown Heron). Solche Vögel lebten in großer Zahl in den Mangroven Sümpfen.
Und am nächsten Morgen beobachtet Jirakuipai aus einem Versteck, wie seine Feinde voller Übermut im Wasser schwammen. Und während er noch über Rache sinnierte, war er plötzlich kein Mann mehr. Er hatte sich zu einem Krokodil verwandelt. Aus den vielen Wunden auf seinen Rücken wurde der Rückenkamm, sein Mund veränderte sich zu einer langen Schnauze mit scharfen Zähnen und das ganze Bündel von Speeren in seinem unteren Rücken wurde zu einem Schwanz, .an dessen äußerstem Ende einer seiner männlichen Speere, mit dem Widerhaken nur auf einer Seite, zu sehen war.
Die Legende berichtet nicht, was Jirakuipai mit den Feinden machte. Es ist aber wohl klar!

How the saltwater crocodile was born (a legend from the dream time)
The natives of Bathurst Island, an island in northern Western Australia, in the Timor Sea, tell about the formation of the saltwater crocodile another dreamtime legend:
In this long and creative period, which many call the Dream time, lived on a freshwater lagoon Jirakuipai. He had married his two sisters Kuraruna and Jaknia. Jirakuipai was considered an outstanding expert in the production of spears. He mastered the art of making large spears for the men with many barbs on one side. And he was also able to make the handy little spears for women. They then had a double set of barbs.
He had just completed the production of a larger number of spears when a group of natives from the neighboring island of Melville Island stormed his camp and seriously injured him in the back with numerous spear wounds.
Jirakuipai was a strong man. He pulled the spears out of his body and threw them, as an act of retaliation, at the attackers. Then he saves himself by jumping into the water and diving away.
To escape capture, his two wives turned into two birds. In herons. Kuraruna became a night heron (Night Heron) and Jaknia a brown heron (Brown Heron). Such birds lived in large numbers in the mangrove swamps.
And the next morning, from a hiding place, Jirakuipai watches his enemies swam in the water full of arrogance. And while he was still thinking about revenge, he was suddenly no longer a man. He had turned into a crocodile. From the many wounds on his back became the back comb, his mouth changed to a long muzzle with sharp teeth and the whole bundle of spears in his lower back became a tail, at the far end of which one of his male spears, with the barbever only on one side, could be seen.
Legend does not report what Jirakuipai did to the enemies. But it is clear!

"Injun Joe" is the name on the front half of the side of this shovel nose stainless power unit. The train was the CB&Q's Mark Twain Zephyr, The massive St. Louis Union Station train shed is upper picture center. That's a TRRA Baldwin above 9903 and maybe a MoPac unit to the left. 9903 was EMC/Budd built 10/35 as model AA. This is from a purchased slide with no date or photographer given.

She pulled Zephyrs, worked local passenger and freight, and was used as a yard switcher. She was EMD model AA at 1000 hp built in April 1939. Note the Blomberg A1A front truck. That little F on the lower front corner means "Front." The slide was purchased with no photographer's name but dated 1/1/1955 at Saint Joseph, MO.
